It's a very one-eyed-supporter view, hey?

"All our role players who I am invested in and watch play on a regular basis are amazing. But all the role players for that other top 4 club are rubbish and wouldn't get a game for us."

If you asked neutral supporters to grade these matchups, here's how I reckon it would go:

Weitering = May
Kemp < Lever
Newman > Bowey
Saad > Salem

McGovern > Tomlinson
Cincotta = McVee

Marchbank < Rivers

Acres = Langdon
Cottrell < Hunter
Cripps = Oliver
Cerra < Petracca
Walsh > Viney
Hewett > Jordon

Pittonet < Gawn
TDK = McDonald

Curnow > Fritsch
Cuningham < Neale-Bullen

Motlop < Pickett
Fogarty < Sparrow
Owies = Chandler

Docherty > Spargo
Kennedy > Smith

Blue for the matchups we win, red for the matchups Melbourne win, black for the nil-all-draws.

I reckon our backline (as individuals) are slightly better than theirs. Their small forwards are typically more effective than ours. The midfields balance out with us having better spread while they've got the dominant ruck.

Melbourne are no worse than us outside the top 6 players.

And yet on current form....

Weitering > May
Kemp < Lever
Newman > Bowey
Saad > Salem
McGovern > Tomlinson

Cincotta = McVee

Marchbank = Rivers

Acres > Langdon
Cottrell > Hunter

Cripps = Oliver
Cerra < Petracca
Walsh > Viney
Hewett > Jordon

Pittonet < Gawn
TDK > McDonald

Curnow > Fritsch
Cuningham < Neale-Bullen

Motlop < Pickett
Fogarty > Sparrow
Owies > Chandler

Docherty > Spargo
Kennedy > Smith

Doesn't matter - it's a team game.

Collective sum etc...

100% you're right, but the team can't play well, collectively, if the individuals aren't in good form.

Most of ours are in good form thankfully.

TDK a big wildcard for us, one day he really will rip a game apart - dominate the ruck and kick 3 or 4.

Love how "beaten by Hogg" McGuane can't ever bear to tip us and always has our opponent beating us by 2 points. Choke on your M&M guernsey after we get the W, the biggest mistake the club has ever made (which is huge considering salary cap scandal, and shifting home games to Docklands, trading Kennedy, amongst many).
My memory is not quite what it once was. Now you’ve mentioned Matty Hogg v Mick McGuane, I have a very, very vague recollection of something happening in pre-season training. But what was it again?

*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been offered to go in a corporate box tonight by one of our vendors (large telco, guess who) and I cant go because conflict of interest (I sit on the vendor selection panel for RFP's/RFT's etc for our company).
While that sucks... Let me tell you you will enjoy it more sitting in the stands (i know that sounds strange) but the atmosphere ESPECIALLY if we win will be worth it. You can't/don't get any atmosphere at all sitting in the box with a bunch of impartial supporters milling around talking work....

can't you declare a conflict of interest at work?

Define "current form", and qualify it with how many of Melbourne's last X games you have watched siren to siren and analysed with anywhere near the same attention to detail as you would with Carlton.

Not for this one. I thought about running it by my boss however I am in a leadership position. He expects me to make independent, smart decisions. I had to decline it straight away, I'd love to go however my career is sort of important ;)
Putting career, future stability, family & income before your footy team? Ok then......

Maybe Sinjin Snr can go disguised as you? He can really emphasise that it’s been an incredibly stressful week to explain the older appearance.

Love it how SEN commentators say its a 50/50 game but Melbourne are the better team and they will win.
They did manage to land on 100 despite then contradicting it. Brownless the other day on Triple M when he was asked re his thoughts on the probabilities out of Bris, Coll, Melb winning the flag hit 110, then contradicted it with his opinion. My daughter (grade 4) piped up from the backseat with "Dad, that man is wrong that doesn't equal 100!"

If nothing else at least they are providing real world examples for primary school kids to get their mathematical teeth into!

I reckon that's a big change for me. I used to go into games thinking, 'Gee, Cripps will need to have a blinder, Curnow will need to kick heaps', OR 'I hope Gawn doesn't get a hold of us... how will we stop Lever intercepting?', etc.

Now, I just think about the way we play as a team. Our best players don't always have to have their best games for us to win (see last week). But, dare I say it, the system holds up!
