Marshall rips the ball out of the ruck and jams it on the boot a lot, which is how he gets high clearance numbers and it will also take away some clearance opportunities for our mids. My view - it's good for his stats, but often doesn't work out well for us as on the eye I think at least 50% end up coming back with interest.

Teams seem to be now set up for him grabbing it out of the ruck and jamming it onto the boot

Being 8th in total hit outs in the AFL he not jamming it on the boot to much.
The guy is one of our best assets in the midfield , the last game he had 49 hit outs , 8 tackles - time for our midfield to read his tapwork which they should know by now and clear the ball.
Some teams with useless ruckmen read the ball from the contest which our guys are not doing , Marshall is a ruckman that marks around the ground , tackles and is our highest clearance player which just shows how good the guy is.
Thank god we have him because without him we really have not much else.

Degoey would have been quite handy. I still think that Windhager, Phillipou and Owens can make our midfield better but it’s going to be a couple of years before that happens.
Windhager should be playing in the midfield and Owens as well - bleed them into the rotations - lets see what happens in the future rounds.

Windhager will play this week and, hopefully, now that King and Caminiti are back, Owens will be able to run through there as well.
I've been surprised how much time Phillipou seems to be spending around stoppages in his first year.
It should really set these guys up well down the track.

Last year it was the terrible forward 50 structures and single forward target that cost us finals along with some awful transition and a bit of a lazy attitude towards defending the field putting the defence under pressure.

The outside players are our issue. Hill, DMac, Byrnes, Nas, Billings, Clark, Coffield, Wood and Sinclair. All play as wings, rebound backs or high running half forwards.

Injury and form has been against us and we have been trying to develop those players so are playing kids in the roles. Apart from Wood and Sinclair most are patchy or injured. Hill after an amazing start to the year seems to have gone back to cruise mode and the injury to Wood has taken him from absolute elite quality in the first few rounds to a good player. Sinclair is not as dominant as last year either.

Moving Gresh to a more permanent forward role, losing Jones and the injury to Steele has taken a bit of our edge off. Clark is good but slow and struggles to spread or chase. while playing limited minutes on ball. Ross has dropped off from a great start to the year as well. Marshall has been dominant but playing sore now too.

It would be worth developing depth in the midfield but the midfield set up is adequate IMO. You need depth to cover injury though.
I agree the system was the problem last year but an adequate midfield isn’t going to win us a flag though. It’s barely gotten us into finals let alone take us all the way. Better outside players and system would help but do you see Steele-Crouch-Ross holding up a premiership cup? Someone else has to force their way in.

Some shit midfields have flags.

I love Ro mate, just think if he grabs it and kicks out of the ruck, we need to try and set up for it. Ideally better to handball off tho and get clean clearance. Nearly all his clearance would be won this way.

If Marshall can:

1. Grabs the ball out of the ruck and cleanly feed a handball to an outside mid streaming forward

2. Win tap out decisively so our mids can rove to it.

It will make a huge difference to the midfield.

The fact that he gets a lot of tackles, same as Crouch is because our mids do not win first possession from clearances enough.

So, it’s just the symptoms of our midfield problem. I have no idea how to solve this, All I know is Ryder definitely had a bigger impact to the midfield than Marshall, Ryder wins tap decisively more often than not and can direct it to our mids, he also is more of a handball first ruckman, bringing the mids into the game.

"I'm hearing a big news story regarding StKilda is brewing.
Not related to the current list but involving past players.
Sources have been reliable before.
I wonder whether any other forumites have heard similar?
I'm not wanting to spell it out as it would be inappropriate, but it is a seriously nasty story albeit from a long time ago."

He went on to say it relates to players from the 60s and 70s, so nobody that would still be at the club.

Just had a look. Said 60s 70s. It's so long ago that I doubt that it has anything to do with anyone anywhere near the club now. Never great to have your name associated with bad stuff but It shouldn't have any effect on the current list. I was born in the 70s and I'm old. The people that were running the place must be ancient.

60's or 70's players, no it aint good, and but in those days things were alot diffrent, thank god things have changed.
i suspect, that more clubs will be in the gun for past indistrections from those days.

Although it is terrible to hear if it is indeed bad news.
Tbh I don’t really care. It was 60-70 years ago. Hardly relevant to our current team and administration.

$1.01 that journo from the ABC will be behind it if it's true, he's done a great job shining light on past players experiences. Robbie Muir and (maybe, I can't remember) Rod Owen?

Think he also broke some other stories on other clubs too. Can't remember his name.

Russell Jackson?

look i am sure there are more Rod owen and robbie muir, . it was as puppy_dog7 said it was the 1960's 70's oreven if it was 80's that ranges from 60 years to 40 years ago. its long time now.

Or we execute the Billy Longer no kick rule.

Air I fully understand what you are saying but on the weekend he won 49 hit outs and really we had nothing coming from them , the guy is competing amongst the best of them but we don't have that dominator to make the point of difference and once we put in a Owens or Windwager who can win there own ball and break tackles he is not going to show up like we want.
Steele is a shadow of his former self , Ross needs everything to go his way and Crouch is just a hard toiler.
Clark is just to slow for todays game and in saying that if we are winning the center clearances he comes into his own but if we don't he just not quick enough to cover the player running off him.
Guys like Hill need to be fed the ball and we just don't have that atm.
To me Marshall is the least of our worries and the selectors will have to work out the problem but they just can't keep running with the same set up because it is not working against the better midfields.

The coaches a smarter than me so hopefully the work out the right balance.
