Agree with 3KZ is Football that putting games into Fullaton would have been preferable.
Why do people keep mentioning hack fwds who were no good in the first place to replace Gunston...why so they can sit in VFL side? Just pick a kid in the draft and develop from there.
Oh and anyone that thinks Gunston/Manager didn't put the feelers out before announcing he wants out need their head read.

McLaughlin, delisted by the Suns?

Honestly might be the best option going purely on VFL stats, although given how dominant the Suns were in the VFL can't read into it too much. Haven't watched a single second of him personally.

Would be able to pick him up as a delisted free agent too, no trade required and wouldn't need to pick him up in the draft. Could even have him in training for an SSP spot but he might have more concrete interest than that elsewhere.

Not sure if serious but clearly he isn't interested in playing at AFL. Happy to play bush league with his buddies
Semi serious, Hammelmann still only 27 years old, maybe we suss him out and tell him if he wants back in and commits to having a massive pre season we can give him another shot, if he doesn't want to put the work in we pass.

I'd suggest he's aware or been told he has to put in time playing at a decent level before getting recruited which he doesn't want to do.

Does make me question Gunstons reasons for joining us

Seems like he wanted a guaranteed best 22 spot in a top team when he's just not capable of playing at that level

Now it's become clear that he'll likely play VFL next season he wants go back and play in a weaker forward line
I think a bit or perspective is required here though.

Jack lost his father only months earlier, who clearly was a massive influence on his life.

Perhaps a change of environment is what he needed to help him recover from his loss, not to mention also playing for a club in a premiership window which Hawks weren’t.

I think both Lions and Jack saw a lot of upside this time last year in how each could benefit the other.

Ok the fact it hasn’t gone to plan but perhaps personally the year has been more challenging being away from his family who are also grieving and now he wants / need to be back home. I don’t think that’s a knock on us or something he foresaw either but I’m happy to respect his wishes, shake his hand and wish him well.

As others have said, it didn’t work out for either party through no fault of the other and without trying so I’m comfortable with putting this behind us and respecting Jack’s wishes.

Player wants to play senior footy, not interested in playing reserves at 31. What a shock.

On face value, I think it's pretty disappointing from Gunston. It looks like he doesn't want to fight for a spot in the team. Comes across as a pretty poor attitude.

I also find it hard to believe that he'd want out just because of how his first season played out with us... surely there is more at play here...

because we are a chance at a premiership. and if someone is injured in September you at least want an experienced strong body who can bring the ball to ground or make life difficult for a defender (hello Billy Frampton) rather than just some 19yo with 2 games experience who shits the bed when the ball comes near them.

He wanted another flag on the mantelpiece. It was obvious very early on it wasn't working. Taken us a little while to try to disentangle but as he has 2 years it's going to be a bit messy.
It really is a problem ENTIRELY of Fagan's own making. There has been nothing positive to vindicate the decision to pick him up in the first place and then to compound the error, sign him to a two year deal. To characterize Gunston's arrival, performance and impact at our club as anything other than a complete fiasco is completely risible.

Thanks Jack. I hope you passed on a lot of “learnings” this year cause you didn’t give much else, even on the way out apparently.

As I said in #3,564 - LOL

Gunston aka 'Fagan's Fevola'.

Our Hawks recruiting strategy should have stopped at Luke Hodge... in hindsight Birchall and Gunston were mistakes and we would have been better off getting time into our younger guys.

I don’t disagree with anything you’re saying about Gunston 3KZ but I suspect Jack was a bias / convenient / knee jerk reaction to Dan McStay leaving that clouded better judgement.

I still haven’t forgotten many calls from people on here this time last year saying Jack was an upgrade on Dan 🤣

Birch was a great pickup?

There are overreactions, then there are 3KZ overreactions.

IMO >

Hodge - Masterstroke.

Birchall - Fair.

Gunston -

Gunston was a failure. We move on

He cost us a little cap and a list spot. It is as low risk as you'll get. Fort lost his spot in the team and even so signed an extension with us.

Not that it matters because you've been doing this boring bit all year but you do know that it's the list manager that does the actual "list management" of the club, not the coach? It's not the 1980s anymore. You can complain about the bringing in of ex-Hawks players but in the end it's the list manager that makes the calls.

I look forward to whatever player you target with this gimmick next year.
