I must have missed where he wanted to play for us?

Edit: well, other than the fact he's not very good, has been delisted, and would probably be willing to play for anyone - but that's not exactly the same. If Hately is the bar, it's setting it very very low.

I thought you'd say "the bar doesn't exist"

If we recruit him, I'd view it as a bit of nothing - maybe he has some potential left, but I doubt it. There's others that wouldn't even tick the "maybe he has some potential left" bit.

After Fullerton left we needed someone to come in before we let Gunston go. Ryan is probably not going to amount to much but he does give us someone who can come in and play right away if we have an injury and he is a similar type to our current two. He does seem to have good hands above his head to go with his height which gives me a bit of hope that there might be upside there even at 26. Getting a bench guy though was needed and kudos for that.

The thing I disliked was giving away next year's second. In addition to Ashcroft Jr (who I really like) we have a couple of academy kids who look like decent prospects and I personally want to bank points to be able to grab them. Giving away points in next years draft is not something I would be comfortable doing especially when the following year academy kids look like the best in a number of years.

On the other top 8 teams personally I think Sydney were the only team that moved the needle. The others all treaded water at best imo. Schultz is solid but I do not see him as improving Collingwood and I personally think they will miss Adams who won them games at times this year. For Melb I like Billings but he has dropped off the last couple of years and they have no depth at ruck and will be in a lot of pain if Gawn (32 at the beginning of next season) goes down. Port have been sold a handful of magic beans with players who are actually statistically poor at their positions. I think the Saints lost more than they gained and Carlton and GWS did basically nothing. We have upside in quite a few young players who play important positions and not much in the way of veterans who are likely to drop off significantly.

Overall I considered this one of the most uneventful trade periods I have seen across the board with no true stars in their prime moving.

My brother is a Hawthorn supporter and he
a. Rates Ryan highly.
b. Didn’t want Gunston back.

He said we are definitely in front in terms of our trade interactions with Hawthorn.

Yeah I was a little shocked we were prepared to trade our second with a heap of points needed for next year. I hope we don't end up having to weaken our 2025/ 26 draft hands to catch up. That is the period we have to try and bring in a couple of quality key forwards I think.

As a delisted free agent, why not. Replaces Matho's spot on the list

I think we need to draft a handful of talls this year and see if we can get a good/live one with potential. Ryan's a good stop gap with a mature body who can play third tall if Fagan wants that structure.

In the mean time if one of the draftees starts to show signs then he can start rotating with Ryan and play the third tall spot behind Daniher/Hipwood.

And he'd get a game with us would he.
I’ve bolded all the relevant parts that meet the requirements of your first post.
Who's the Midfielder that was available to be traded and wanted to play for us ? Oh and could get without costing us too many picks/points.
You didn’t mention anything about getting a game for us.

That was left to the interpretation of the reader.

I interpreted as a potential back up, not best 22, especially seeing as the post you replied to mentioned looking for a backup for Dunkley.

Hately has a (significantly?) better aerobic capacity than Lyons or Matho. Probably on par with Matho in terms of skill, etc.

Where our picks currently sit in the draft, I’d be genuinely surprised if any KPP we drafted at those picks would be capable of contributing at all this year.

True, unless we sign Brodie McLaughlin as delisted player to our main list.

Looks like we have 6 spots on the list, we could get Brodie now and then see who else we can get via draft. Between Brodie and Brandon it's a decent competition to take the third tall spot.

With future pick trading I’m not particularly fussed with us living on the edge points-wise. You can always trade in the following year’s picks to cover the current year’s. If we are looking short next year, trade some of our 2025 picks. If we have a strong group in 2025, use 2026’s picks and so on. I’m not saying clear entirely out of a future draft as that really ties your hands.

There are always going to be players on your list who will want to be traded for more opportunity/move closer to home/receive better offers etc. Plenty of ways to accrue points. I can’t think of too many clubs who have gone into the following year with a massive deficit.

If we could bring in Dunkley, plus cover early bids on Ashcroft and Fletcher, I think we’ll be OK next year with where we stand.

Do you think we might trade out our first pick next year for a pick next year for points? I wanted a kpf first pick this year but maybe Ryan is our shorter term answer

I doubt our list management is based on winning a flag in 24/25 but with the gabba it makes sense. Going to be pretty hard to win one as a nomad.

I believe you are asking, are we likely to trade out our first pick this year, for a future pick? so we increase our picks/points in next year’s draft.

Yes it is possible. I don’t know who with. There would have to be a player on board at our first pick that another team wants, and would be willing to trade a future second round pick, or very early third round pick for.

Or we could trade a pick or multiple picks to Gold Coast for a future second round pick.

Looking at the current draft order, there aren’t too many teams that are in a position to trade up for Gold Coasts early second round picks.

Both the Bulldogs (4) and Hawthorn (5) hold a heap of third round picks, but are likely to need them to match bids on their father son kids who are likely to be bid on mid to late first round.

Hawks could potentially trade up for one of GC’s picks if it looks like a bid on their father son kid is going to be later than expected (entirely possible).

Otherwise Essendon or Fremantle look the most likely to trade up, especially if they have NGA kids that might make past pick 40.

If we do it will bring new meaning to the anyone/anywhere mantra!

Grin - 'home' SF/PF at the MCG vs non-MCG tenants

I’m all in for Hately too. Good in and under replacement for Will Ashcroft until he gets back. May even be good enough to hold his place in the team after that.

I’m not all in on Hately.

But if we need midfield depth on our list, especially if we let Mathieson go, he’s currently at the top of my list for a SSP spot.

It would essentially be a one year trial, ahead of next years draft.
