Didn't hunter Clark resign at St Kilda. I am sure months ago I saw him on the news doing an interview saying on trade day last year he expected to be at north but now he so happy to resign at saints

Mandela Effect. You must have slipped into a parallel universe.

Should we throw a bunch of cash at Mitch Duncan and Tom Stewart to see if we can prise them loose from the cats this year? Exactly the kind of solid leaders this team needs.

I have no idea what the trade value would be, but both are FA after 2024, so the cats might be inclined to trade them for something this season, rather than lose them for nothing next year.

Ruck merry-go-round on the move

Essendon journeyman Andrew Phillips’ retirement on Tuesday – after 78 games for three clubs, across 13 seasons – could have ramifications for this year’s ruck merry-go-round.
At age 32, Phillips has already played his most matches in any season (17) while shouldering the load for the Bombers in No.1 ruckman Sam Draper’s injury absence. Draper told Nova FM’s breakfast program he expects to miss just one more match before returning from his hip injury.
But Essendon also have promising out-of-contract big man Nick Bryan on their list. His six senior appearances this year take his career total to 12 since the Bombers used the No.38 pick on him in the 2019 draft.

Bryan, 21, rejected rival interest, primarily from St Kilda, to re-sign for two years in 2021, and Phillips’ retirement may pave the way for him to be Draper’s ruck deputy, but he remains without a deal beyond this season. The 203-centimetre ruckman’s competitiveness has been questioned at times, but he has admirers.
The Saints, Port Adelaide, Collingwood, Geelong, Sydney, North Melbourne, Greater Western Sydney and West Coast are all in the ruck market, while Essendon are also on the lookout, according to list management sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The Phillips news follows Carlton pair Marc Pittonet and Tom De Koning and Brisbane Lions back-up Darcy Fort committing to their clubs despite having interest elsewhere.

That leaves the likes of Bryan, Western Bulldogs’ Jordon Sweet, Power trio Scott Lycett, Brynn Teakle and Sam Hayes, and Giants duo Matt Flynn and Braydon Preuss, who have fallen behind emerging big man Kieren Briggs.
The Blues were one club monitoring Flynn’s situation until De Koning re-signed. GWS also have category B ruckman Nick Madden, so there is a good chance one of Flynn or Preuss is playing elsewhere in 2024.

Geelong’s Rhys Stanley and Jon Ceglar, both 32, are also out of contract, while the future is undecided for North Melbourne great Todd Goldstein, Swan Tom Hickey and St Kilda’s Tom Campbell.
Tiger Ivan Soldo is contracted until the end of next season, but list-management sources who spoke to Money Talks suggested he was gettable in this year’s trade period. There is also ongoing interest in Brodie Grundy’s situation as his stint outside Melbourne’s senior side reaches four games.

Gold Coast’s Ned Moyle is another ruckman who attracted interest, but the Suns have no intention of trading him, especially with Jarrod Witts turning 31 in September.

One thing I did notice a few times was Xerri bashing the ball forward out of the contested scrum and I wonder why we don’t try this more often from time to time.

I realise historically we have had more solid set and forget contested mids, but when you are running with LDU, TT and in the future Wardlaw we should be palming into space.

Here's that David Zita report from yesterday:

Tom Barrass (West Coast Eagles)

While the jungle drums reached fever pitch in recent weeks that he would make the move to Sydney, foxfooty.com.au understands Barrass is far more likely to stay at West Coast. Barrass is contracted to the club until the end of 2027 and it’s important to note both club and management insist there’s been no change on their end. The club’s reigning best and fairest winner is one of the only players with genuine trade currency on the Eagles’ list and the Swans are the clear frontrunner for his services on the unlikely chance he plays elsewhere in 2024. Sydney currently has pick No.7 in the draft, with that pick to chop and change depending on results in the final weeks of the home and away season. West Coast would ask for at least that selection for the former pick No.43. Key to negotiations would be how much of Barrass’ salary the Swans are willing to pick up. The Herald Sun reported earlier this year the 27-year-old is on roughly $750,000 this season. Sydney also had interest in Himmelberg before he re-signed, making Barrass’ signature all the more important. Lance Franklin was on a significantly reduced salary in 2023 compared to his nine-year deal, but his retirement also frees up even more cap space. Signs point to Barrass staying put, however.

Ben McKay (North Melbourne)

Multiple industry figures spoken to by foxfooty.com.au expect Ben McKay to request a trade out of North Melbourne, with Essendon looming as his likely destination. Hawthorn is also interested in the 25-year-old, needing more depth at both ends of the ground. McKay has met with the Bombers, as reported by The Age’s Pete Ryan in recent weeks. Despite the recent re-signing of Mason Redman and ongoing negotiations with Darcy Parish, the Bombers have the cap space to accommodate McKay. The issue for McKay is a poor year has limited what clubs may’ve once been willing to pay for him. Still, Essendon has the scope to offer McKay a contract that would meet ‘band one’ requirements for free agency compensation, with pick No.3 likely for North Melbourne when McKay makes his move, even though the AFL has assured aggrieved clubs it would not manipulate its compensation formula if Essendon’s offer didn’t meet band one requirements. Port Adelaide has put more groundwork in on Esava Ratugolea.

Hawthorn traded up in the national draft to get Weddle. Absolute jet with a very high ceiling. He's only played 14 games or so.
Sam Mitchell loves this guy - he will be a Hawk for a long, long time.

Why not visit the GCFC - we have surplus players up the wazoo who need new homes.

Chris Burgess would be excellent for you and Larkey especially (plus he can ruck a bit too)

Constable has been unlucky - ave 23 pos and 3 marks a game - HB spot maybe?

Hollands is defo on the table, as is Sharpe. Caleb Graham possibly too.

We also have pick 5 which might be on the table for the right player.

Plus we are just as shite as Brady at the trade table so you'd more than likely make out like bandits dealing with us (Bowes anyone )

Good luck for next year - hope you get back on track as the competition needs a strong North Melbourne.
You guys are as good as trading as us, you’ll probably find we’ll pay a fair price for all assets.

You should trade with us more.

Elijah Hollands on the table??

Great news for McKay compo. Barrass staying and another potential buyer in Hawthorn for Ben.

Barrass staying is huge for us. Id imagine he will be captain at west coast now.

Sydney will 100% want to capitalise on a quality midfield with loading up in other areas.

As a previous poster said, more than happy to do a side deal with the swans that lands us Stephens as well, as logn as they ensure the pay for Mckay gets us Band 1.

Swans get: Mckay (FA), Pick 15
North Get: Pick 3(Compo), Stephens, Pick 22

Happy days, shake hands, everyone wins except Essendon, which is what we all want.

Barrass staying. You would have to think becomes Essendon Vs Sydney Vs potentially Hawthorn bidding war for McKay?

Only him and Esava left as proven key defenders. I hardly count Esava either as proven…

$$$

Stephens will cost chips. He's closer to the PSD or DFA than he is a pick downgrade.

In the hypothetical the Swans want McKay and he's happy to go there we wouldn't have any need to worry about sweetening things, we know the Swans were going to offer a premium for Barrass. They have money to burn and McKay would cost more to an interstate club than a Vic one as you don't up and move to another city for market rate. They'd be keen to fill the gap of a key defender and not spend their first rounder (and change according to some reports) to do it. If he was unrestricted then maybe we'd need to do something creative like the above.

At that, I'm not sure this is good for us yet because Barrass was under contract, they're not really bound by anything other the player saying no and clubs not wavering on what looks like a really good deal.

Stephens was a pick 5, four years ago??

They arent delisting him.

I asked a prominent Swans poster the other day what is the knock on Stephens. The answer was "what does he do well?".

Paddy Dow was taken pick 3 two years earlier, just had the best game of his career and people are still talking about which token pick would get him. Now we won't get him DFA, I merely said he was closer to that region but he won't cost more to us than a 4th round pick, 3rd rounder at best and anything else the Swans will be biting our hands off.
