1. Nineteen-year-old key forward Weckert, who gave away a promising cricket career as a fast bowler to concentrate on football, was overlooked at last year’s draft following a disappointing AFL under-18 national championships campaign.
But the 194cm tall, who dropped 5kg over summer, has enjoyed a standout start to the 2024 league season, kicking eight goals in three games for the top-of-the-table Eagles, including seven in the past two weeks. He also has averaged five marks and is fitter than last season, enabling him to cover more territory.

2. Dashing half-back flanker Beecken, who turned 23 last week, is a late bloomer who was expected to get drafted after the Eagles won their second of back-to-back premierships in 2021. The grandson of legendary football administrator and SA Football Hall of Fame inductee John Condon, he appears to have taken his game to the next level this season, having averaged 22 disposals, five marks and four rebound 50s. The 184cm backman has chalked up 56 disposals in the past two matches and oozes AFL qualities with his size, running power and excellent kick.

3. Hard-as-nails midfielder D’Aloia, 20, was overlooked at the past two national drafts, despite being SA’s under-18 captain in 2022 and winning the state’s MVP medal and team-first player’s player award. Like Weckert and Beecken, he has blossomed at league level this season, averaging 28 disposals, nine clearances, six tackles and six inside 50s.

4. Running halfback McLennan, 23, spent four years on Gold Coast’s AFL list after being selected at pick 23 at the 2018 national draft. But he did not play an AFL game before being delisted at the end of 2022, when he returned to the Bulldogs.

5. Midfield hard nut Kobe Ryan, 20, was considered unlucky not to have been drafted in his first draft eligible year in 2022. A strong contested ball winner who does his best work at stoppages, he possesses clean, quick hands, tidy skills, great tackling ability and an extremely high work rate. Ryan finished equal-seventh in last year’s Magarey Medal count, polling 17 votes, while becoming the first West player to win the Powerade Breakthrough Player award. He has improved even further this season, averaging 23 disposals, 11 tackles and six clearances and won the Russell Ebert Medal as best afield in the Round 2 win against Port Adelaide at Waikerie.

He’s very good on the lead, possessing really good leading patterns, and manages to get plenty of shots on goal for us. Tallan needs to tidy up his goalkicking accuracy a bit because he had eight scoring shots against North Adelaide in Round 2 and kicked 4.4. He also booted 2.3 in the next two games against Sturt and West Adelaide, so he needs to capitalise on his opportunities a bit more. Can someone answer this question. If we do put SPP to the inactive list and pick up a player what contract term does the player sign for?

Because if it is >6 months it would mean we have to delist another player at the end of the season.

So aren't we saying we can find a better player in the mid season draft than what we can as our last pick of the 2024 draft?

And in my opinion results say we are better taking the draft pick.

We will delist and trade least 5.

We've already pretty much got our draft players selected with Lou Montgomery, Rome Burgoyne and Benny Barrett from the academy.

We may even pick up Ky Burgoyne late?

Maybe a Cat B ruck project from somewhere?

None of these players cost us real picks.

Yes agree with what you're saying here. With the assumption these 3 will be taken with late picks we will only use our 2nd round pick to take a player.

Narkle delisted if out of contract

Are Evans and Narkle rookies if so don't we need to delist more guys on the actual list?

So to go any further will require a trade or a young guy to be delisted to bring in a mid season player unless its a 6 month contract or Ky Burgoyne in the draft.

In my personal opinion, if you are looking for a more mature recruit and are prepared to wait you can find a better player in the delisted free agents list in the next draft. People who think back end draft picks and rookie list picks are useless then we should fill our rookie list with SANFL players in the rookie draft.

My big problem with our draft process is that we have cut too heavily the last few years, which has depleted our depth unnecessarily and created a poor environment for our developing draft picks. We are drafting too many late/rookie picks, yet not surrounding them with the right environment. This excess in type has led to an imbalance in our list and eventually it will have a flow on effect to our senior team as they spend their summers training and practising against lesser opponents.

If you took a real moneyball look at our squad. Are there any players out there on an SANFL, VFL, WAFL list that are better than our current players? If so, why are clubs so scared of Playstation trading? Get rid of the lesser players and grab the best ones you can.

Is Evans the best small forward option outside of the AFL? Are there other early/mid 20's small forwards in the 2nd tier that'd be worth a look. If we can improve on him then why not?
Narkle again, surely he isn't the best mid/flanker type player outside of the AFL? If he isn't then why not go and get the best one. Boost our depth and improve our reserves development environment.
Is Hugh Jackson the best young mid outside of the AFL? Would Kobe Ryan be a better option, even if just for depth? Kobe is younger and doing some good things. Does Hugh have more growth in him?

We have at least 9 developing players outside of the core AFL group, that aren't fully ready to go (Visentini, Scully, Walsh, Tom A, Charleson, Lorenz, K Marshall, McCallum, Jackson). That's a huge portion of a 42 man list. Visentini climbs out of that group over 1 more pre-season, maybe Lorenz as well, maybe Jackson? So then when we go to the draft you really want to be decreasing the size of that group not increasing it. We don't have a 1st rounder, so you'd have to think that we should be minimising the number of kids we bring in, especially when we are also losing a bunch of experience through retirement.

So for mine, I'd be looking at some of our weak links and trying to replace them with the best available talent in the 2nd tier. Evans, Narkle, McCallum, for me would be the 3 I'd walk immediately and try to replace them with someone better.

Only players you'd think we'd be keen on around are Pickett who just re-committed and free agent Hayward.
