We need the return of the full forward kicking bags of goals! Then we’ll see the votes start to spread

Doubt it. Franklin kicked 113 goals in '08 and got 20 votes.
Fevola kicked 99 and got only 11 votes.
Even Hogan was brilliant this year (easily best KPF) and couldn't even get close to his midfield teammate (24 votes to 15) in Tom Green (who deservedly missed the 44 man AA squad), let alone actually challenge for the Brownlow.

It's purely a midfielders medal these days with the same few players attracting votes every game.

Gary Ablett kicked 10 goals or more TWICE in 1993 and didn't get a vote.

That's because this all biased bullshit that's masqueraded as some kind of holy grail, calling it "the best and fairest".

If Ablett is kicking 10 goals and not getting votes, it's probably because they're biased and want others to get votes.

At the moment they're is so much betting, it's hard to believe that there wouldn't be anything shady going on on top of that as well.

Just a friendly reminder, that the AFL sacked an umpire not to long ago, for being part of a Brownlow medal betting scandal, involving bets and leaking insider information. Given some very questionable votes tonight, or lack of votes. The fans trust in umpires and the Brownlow is more and more eroded. One can't help to think if any of the current umpires have mates put on a sneaky bet for them money wise at the start of the year?. Been some very questionable voting in some games across the last 3 or so seasons. If one umpire was able to almost get away with it....
You are going hard as tonight mate. Don't strain yourself.

People having a genuine discussion on a voting system that is obviously flawed is melting now apparently.

No one cares that Cripps won, he deserves it, the fact he won it by so much and now effectively has the best season in history is a farce.
He doesn't effectively have the best season ever.

He simply received the most votes ever in a slightly longer season.

Nobody has ever equated brownlow votes as being the only qualifying factor in how good a player actually is (apart from a few dummy spitters on here. Refer Lethal Leigh Matthews.

You can't seriously think that whoever has the highest Brownlow vote total in a season had the best season in history. The numbers are meaningless and just reflect a whole heap of factors that have nothing to do with individual performance like how good your teammates are, how good your team is, what position you play etc etc. Comparing totals across seasons means nothing
The whole thing was inflated, not just Cripps. Multiple players on that leaderboard had way more votes than their influence deserved including daicos who somehow polled votes in a game where his influence was well below average. In this day and age of AI and pretty remarkable Champion data stats that calculates influence on games, should call for a change to how the votes are tallied.

We can't just keep following an ancient means of tallying votes just because it's tradition.

Meek was huge for us all year and a major reason we made finals. Will get a lot of B & F votes, 0 Brownlow.

Apparently we massively exceeded literally all expectations just because of Newk.

In and under guys that get lots of the ball. Those are the only ones getting regular votes. I thought Treloar had a great season but Bont was way better. Butters just polled high 20s, Green mid-20s, Rowell too.

It’s getting worse.

F/O back to Europe rompings.
Why do you hate Europe so much. Do they really deserve him.
How about America deep in MAGA territory.

Because he won us them all himself, Walsh had a poor season outside of a good patch when we looked great thumping port and geelong and Cerra was too busy popping hammys to play midfield. It was the cripps show which is why they fell away from last years efforts, no support.

Walsh had a 39 disp game and Cripps got 3 with 23 and 2 goals.
Vs Freo 19 disp 2 votes.
Vs Ess 20 disp 2 votes.
Played 1 very good quarter vs pies late in year in the last 3 votes.

N.Daicos went off against melb with 13 and got votes lol.

These umps are cooked.

Yep, Walshy had back issues and even while playing he wasn’t the same player as back half of last season. Cerra even more so, both in their 2023 form would have taken votes off Cripps.

Hopefully we have a better season next year and they take votes off each other.

What would work is if they gave out votes across the round, not per game.

Very difficult to do, but it would stop situations where teams with one dominant player see that player get disproportionately high number of votes.

To poll well, you need to be best across the league that week. Very hard to do though, prob a futile exercise.
You can't compare playing under the roof at Marvel to a wet Friday night at the MCG or a game at the 'Rat or Alice but I like the idea

Which is exactly why the voting needs to be changed lol.

Cripps got the most votes in history at the premier AFL BnF award by far, in any case that should mean he had the best season in history.
Not at all.

It insinuates that the gulf and spread (or lack thereof) of quality is greater than it’s ever been thought. It would be interesting to a graphical representation of spread of votes over time. It feels like far fewer support types attract votes ever these days.

Eighteen teams obvious also dilutes the number of star teammates taking votes off one another.

20 votes now isn’t 20 votes in the awards yesteryear. This isn’t to downplay Cripps’ fantastic season where he was a dominant player, but it does provide rhetoric as to how vote tallies have changed.

Courtesy of Useless AFL Stats on Facebook:

Brownlow Leaderboard
P Cripps 45
North Melbourne 43
Rest of Carlton 42
N Daicos 38
West Coast 30
Rest of Collingwood 30
11 other players 29-20
Richmond 19

And of those 19, Tarranto managed to get 2 votes in a 9 goal loss with his team only managing 6 goals.

He had the 16th most inside 50s too, so he wasnt delivering the ball and his forwards were failing, he was a sideways kicking stat padder.

Exactly - so comparing across seasons is meaningless. There is never going to be a perfect system and Champion Data is certainly not it imo. We have a coaches award and a players award as well. All of them are flawed in some way

Fyfe had a better season in 2015. Arguably 2019.

But Carlton are a dumpster fire. No A graders to take votes off Cripps.

That's ridiculous. Sam Walsh is obviously a very good player. He has polled very well in the Brownlow before. He polled 16 tonight. He just had a back injury and struggled a lot. Tall forwards don't poll much but that doesn't make Curnow and McKay B Graders. Weitering got AA but fullbacks don't get votes either. Adam Saad has an AA guernsey. Tom De Koning got injured.

We just had a lot of players down, but your call is silly.
