We're on the final stretch run with the National Draft only a couple of weeks away. Just like last season I'll be producing a series of full season highlights videos for the top prospects, and first up is Sid the kid, the SANFL Sensation Sid Draper.

The player I want , speed around the ball, run and carry , he's everything in a mid we don't have
The kids dynamite.

Taj Hotton could be the doozy in this years draft.

The ACL injury has pushed him outside of top 10 calculations but there has to be a club willing to take the gamble on him.

With our new head of fitness having a specific background in ACL and Hamstring injuries / rehab I'm really hoping we can land him.

I just don't know if 10 / 11 is too high, I also don't think he lasts till 18.

GWS will take him with #15 / #16 imo thats the latest he will slide

Berry to Fremantle at #14

Or Freo take Hotton and GWS go Berry but these 2 look just about set for both these teams

I dont think we are anywhere near the add icing on top take risks phase

Who's gonna be the campaigner that creates a thread for the mock draft foe this board? 🤣

This is how I'm thinking as well unless it's a big reach. I think if we get Lalor and Jagga (for example) this year and then pick up Dyson Sharp for example next year we probably aren't too far off having the centre square mids sorted.

This is why I asked about Archie L earlier for next year. If he is a total standout I'm happy to take lots of mids.
Archie L has shown a bit talent wise but has yet to show a lot of consistency. Goes missing in game but then bobs up and will nail a couple of goals. A fair way to go before you start thinking he’s a walk up. There will be mids for sure, so I think we should go 2 KP types in this draft.

We've lost a large amount of x-factor and types of players that draw fans to the footy. The likes of Dusty, Rioli and Bolton were all x-factor and put bums on seats.

For me, it makes sense to take a punt on this kid if he is still on the board between 10 and 15 (if we still have picks there) as he looks like he could be anything if he can put it all together.

He, along with FOS are in my "must recruit if still there category".

Leaning more towards just keeping our picks tbh
same.

Grab a slider at 6.

Grab another slider, or 2, at 10, 11.

We only need 2 top tier mids as there will be more next year. Always mids available. Top 2 picks for mids then best available KPF.

Midfielders or mid-forwards you would be happy to give up pick 10 for, 2012 - 2021 drafts(with the benefit of current hindsight):

2012 J Macrae, Wines, J Viney(f/s)
2013 Josh Kelly, Bontempelli, P Cripps, Z Merrett, (M Crouch? - probably not)
2014 Petracca, Angus Brayshaw, DeGoey, Heeney(academy) T Miller
2015 Mills(academy) Oliver, Parish, Hopper, J Dunkley, J Dawson
2016 Taranto, McLuggage, S Bolton, (J Daicos? f/s - probably not)
2017 Andrew Brayshaw, Uniacke, Cerra, Ed Richards, T Kelly, Z Bailey? J Worpel? Dyl Moore?
2018 Walsh, Rankine, Rozee, B Smith? Butters, Rowbottom
2019 Rowell, Anderson, H Young, Serong, T Green(academy) Flanders, Day, Chad Warner
2020 Holmes, Gulden(academy)
2021 Horne, Callaghan, N Daicos(f/s)

That's about 40 mids/mid-forwards/wingers you would happily take with pick 10 based on current hindsight AND who were available in the open draft, ie not f/s or academy. So they occur at the rate of around 4 per draft. The minimum we have seen is 2, max is about 7 from a 10 year sample.

Of the top layer available to all clubs, who I would say were roughly Bontempelli, P Cripps, Degoey, Petracca, Oliver, Bolton, Andrew Brayshaw, Walsh, Rankine, Rozee, Butters, Miller, McLuggage, Rowell, Anderson, Serong, Warner, Horne, 12 of 18 went in the top 5 of the draft.

There does seem to be a lot of good ones in this draft, anything up to 8-10 of them. I wouldn't mess around, if there are mids we rate, take them. There is no guarantee, or possibly even no likelihood there will be obvious quality mids available at picks we actually take to the draft in the future. If we fancied we could get something like the level and playing style of say Petracca, Serong, Rankine, just take them while we can.

Genuinely reckon he'll go right after our pick 11 (pre bids). Clubs aren't silly, he's a gun. if we don't take him there he's gone.

We lack crafty, speedy line breakers and mids with strong aerial abilities. We lack goal kickers. We will kick ourselves 3 years down the track big time if we let him slip.
I tend to agree, if he is there I think we have to pounce.

I'm not certain one way or the other if he is a icing on top player or just a genuinely talented player putting up good numbers.

I know the sample size is small due to the injury, but in his 3 coates league games for 2024 he averaged 28 disposals of which 14.7 were kicks on average and 14 were handballs on average, averaged 7.3 marks, 2.3 tackles and 1.7 goals.

On the surface that just reads like a good solid, consistent quality player rather than a flashy icing on top player?

My only issue is if we trade up and lose a pick
Are we still taking him ?

Perfect long term play IMO.

Cuts his teeth at HF before being a line breaking, goal kicking mid.

My preferred option with our first 2 picks are Smith & Draper. They would balance our midfield nicely alongside Taranto Hopper Ross McAuliffe but I'm in the minority there
