FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

I get the feeling Hannaford or Hynes are where we land for our first pick.

I'm not as sold on Gross as most people are. I'd rather just take an Urquhardt or Ough a little later in the draft and grab Hannaford (if he slips to our second pick) or Harrison Oliver as a small defender with our second pick.

Sanders is a contested beast so I'm less concerned by the post-Libba landscape than some are. We just picked up Matt Kennedy who can play inside as well.
Ough and Boxshall are the taller mids I can see us targeting. Especially if we pick Oliver/Clarke with our second one will probably be there at 35 or wherever that 3rd pick ends up landing draft night.

Think I pointed it a while back that in about 3 years time when the guys from the next couple of drafts are becoming best 22 we are going to have nearly every tall mid on our list be over 30 which isn't great and probably going to end up with us targeting that area at some point over the next few drafts maybe multiple times if we get lucky with kids on our board dropping.

I'm discussing Ough in a few places - he gets compared to Freijah in draft profiles, but has less hurt factor by foot and probably has shown more 'contested' game than Joel. Freijah did have that crazy good game as a top ager to showcase his ceiling whereas Ough has shown more of a solid body of work rather than a freaky-good performance on a single day.

Yeah he pretty much does remind me a bit of Freijah just more inside. Bits of Cripps in there too. He did start having really big games towards the end of the year and like Freijah has a really late December b'day so could be one that shoots out of the blocks and surprises a few.

Oh yes, December birthday. Traditionally that automatically puts him on our recruitment radar.

The way Freijah out-performed sanders this year is the way a later pick in this draft could out-perform our first and second pick next year. Outside of the top 10 or so, I see flaws in every kid across the board and there's no real way of knowing how they will fare in the AfL system until they get there.

It's probably why I'm weighting the more 'competitive' kids a bit more highly this year (Hannaford/Barrat/Urquhardt) as that aggression/competition covers a multitude of deficiencies (e/g/ Clay Smith, Daniel Cross, Matty Bord)

Urquhart is probably going to drop quite a bit considering his disposal, other players bolting up that play similar without that caveat (Boxshall) and the genuine depth of midfielders in this draft. When I did a rough top 50 a while back I couldn't even justify having him in it and it and it seems the draft central and even the tabloids in WA which have a list of the WA boys most likely to be picked up and write ups on them have him listed as being either a late pick or possibly even a rookie pick up.

If we are talking about WA boys one I like the look of is Cody Angove, he is a tad raw but he reminds me of Luke Breust.

Getting another young ruck this year doesn't make any sense, as you would have two sitting there in the vfl for years. After a pressure forward a ruck capable of playing next year is the most pressing list need. You would hope they would never play, but there's a genuine chance that Lobb and Darcy are two of the most essential players in the team next year at either end. There's no need to use a decent pick on one, but leaving this hole on the list would be poor list management.

Read Urquhart had to have a hip reconstruction last year. Not a medical person, but I know someone that's had one at age 20 and he ended up retiring at 25. That worries me a bit with Urquhart.
Although he has done alot of work on it and is the utmost professional, the prospect of him needing repeat surgeries are high. Also not a medical person but the word degenerative doesn't sound good.

All in all though I'd happily take him at the end of the draft and absolutely as a rookie. I rank him much higher then others do.

That would be a dreamy draft 😍 but with our 1st, it most likely will be a choice of Hynes or Hannaford, can't see Hannaford making it through till pick 25-29( matched bids).

I would hate having to use our first on Hynes.
Would definitely take Hannaford before him, then if there at our second , ok .

What do you think of Hynes Mof ?
I can’t get too enthusiastic. I hate where our first has landed.
I like your take on the draft, after the first 15 it seems incredibly even, but I’m sure there’s some future stars there.

We basically need Trainor, Whitlock & Shanahan taken before our pick and we get a chance to grab whoever falls out of Lindsay/Reid/Hotton/Berry (funnily any of these go top 10 and I’m not surprised)

We seem pretty interested - I share some concerns too and would rather the (less highly rated) Hamish Davis, simply because he's already shown he can 'step up' a level and perform - 4 goals in a WAFL final against quality state league opposition has to be worth something: https://wafl.com.au/match/league-east-fremantle-v-claremont-finals-week-1-2024

Has pretty good forward half IQ, tested well for the 2km time trial too I believe.

I like Hannaford's style too and if he can be shown to improve on his (poor) 2km time trial I'd be comfortable taking him with our first. I hope our guys get a VO2 Max test from him.

That goes a long way towards explaining why he’s not higher rated tbh. I know his kicking is absolutely atrocious, but he’s otherwise really impressed me with his contested game, acceleration and high end speed. Without hip concerns I’d have thought he’s a top 30-40 talent

how do we feel about the trading up scenario? I was in favour of targeting Sanders last year because the top 6 seemed a cut above (altho still have reservations about taking a Taswegian)

But this year I feel like its too random to bank on someone we rate being available in the low teens? Or is there a clear top 12-15 this year or something? Seems like the kind of draft where you want more picks?

Trading up our first pick makes me real nervous

I’d just rather more picks inside the top 25

The top midfielders are in that top 12ish range, but there’s quality players throughout.
