FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

Sounds like Reid is a good chance of slipping to us by the herald sun phantom with Port a chance to grab him before us. We've done late work on Trainor as well.

They also have us linked to Hynes and Hannaford.

Pick 20 - Murphy Reid

Midfielder, 181cm, Sandringham Dragons/South Melbourne Districts

Drafted: WESTERN BULLDOGS

We say: There is a widespread feeling now that Murphy could be one of this year’s big draft sliders, after being rated by some as a top-10 selection earlier in the year. He’ll still be snapped up in the first round and is a classy player who Sandringham coach Rob Harding has likened to Collingwood champion Scott Pendlebury. However, some scouts have raised questions about Reid’s size and whether he is a little bit one-paced. Interstate clubs have also left interviews with the impression that Reid would prefer to – or be better suited to – remaining in Victoria. He has been linked to Port Adelaide a few spots earlier, but if the Power instead grab a tall then Reid could conceivably slip to the Bulldogs. Rivals believe he would complement the Dogs’ midfield nicely.

The numbers say: Finished as the No.2 ranked player at the under-18 national championships this year, averaging 24.5 disposals, 3.3 marks, 3.3 clearances, 7.3 score involvements and 131 ranking points.

Pick 29 - Luke Trainor

Defender, 194cm, Sandringham Dragons/Old Brighton Grammarians

Drafted: WESTERN BULLDOGS

We say: Rated a potential top-five pick earlier this year, Trainor shapes as perhaps the biggest draft slider despite showing plenty on the field at stages this year. On talent, some recruiters rate him “the best tall utility in the draft”. However, there are concerns over recent head knocks, as well as question marks over his one-on-one defensive abilities. It is understood that the Bulldogs are one club who have done some late work on Trainor, recognising that he could prove a bargain buy if he slides outside of the first round. Trainor’s biggest strengths are his intercepting and overhead marking and he has drawn comparisons to Geelong’s Tom Stewart as a third-tall type defender.

The numbers say: Rated at the No.2 key defender in the Coates Talent League this year, averaging 19.8 disposals, 5.6 marks, 2.4 intercept marks, 6 intercept possessions and 103 ranking points.
Would be just about an ideal scenario for me. Obviously both have significant question marks but with those mostly off field and medically based I'd back the club in to get them right and to have done the due diligence. Based purely on talent alone they're both worthy of the top 10.

When does Cal Twomey release his next Phantom Draft? You will be able to get a very good idea of the top 15-20 from that, he usually goes at around 70-80% for that range from the last few years.
No doubt Cal gets the best inside word, but even he is saying clubs are being especially cagey this year. Should make for a fun draft night.

We've just had a draftee medically retired due to concussion, that would make me nervous though obviously Trainor's a big talent.
If anything Aiden shown it can happen to anyone at anytime. Every concussion is different and so is everyone's reaction to each knock.
I'm sure the recruiting team would be nervous aswell and would get a tick of approval from the medical team first.

Can’t imagine Reid dropping out of the top 15.
2 years of physical development and he could be a star.

Passing on Hannaford at our 2nd pick would turn me into the Hulk. I'd happily trade out our future first for him.

If we could get Trainor at our second pick our future backline could be set with him Busslinger and oddonell. Grab Angus Clarke with the 3rd pick

The future forward line is also looking special with Marra Darcy naughton and weightman

If we get Murphy Reid at our first also shapes the future midfield with sanders and Richard’s

Starting to build a pretty complete team if it all falls our way. I’m excited for our future 3 peat 😉

Harry Oliver VS Angus Clarke

Who is your preferred? Why?

Cooper Hynes VS Jesse Dattoli

Who is your preferred and why?

:)
Oliver - smaller but seems more of a 'defender' than Clarke who is more rebounder.

Hynes, as I'm simply not sure what Dattoli becomes. Hynes has more midfield scope

4 knockouts before you even play in the afl as an Intercept defender is too big a risk to me. Trainor is also very similar positonally to Busslinger. 3rd tall who racks it up and has tidy skills.

Not convinced they could play together but maybe we think Busslinger goes home eventually.

Interesting that Hannaford could slide back again, makes you wonder what clubs found when they did interviews and dug a little deeper.

Hynes looks to be a player but I just don’t see how he fits. Our forward line needs super mobile types, not mid sized forwards. We must project him as inside mid to take Matt Kennedy’s spot eventually.

Baffling we don't seem to be linked to smaller ground player types although it’s still early days.

I mean Trainor could end up being better than Busslinger and JOD. But all three are not your lock-down, number one defender types. All will be fighting for two spots, and are best served playing more freely to intercept. If we went tall, we really need to find a Weitering, Harris, May, Taylor type to compliment them. As well as a small lock-down defender to take on the smaller types. But knowing us, we will probably nab some rebounder.

Hannaford isn't free falling. His projected range is one of the widest in the draft, from late teens to early 30s. I think it is more of the fact there are other similar types, and also his small sample compared to others who played all year at one position.

Hayes is a MID first, but capable of long stints in the forward line.

Trainor link is only a mock draft. Been a few rumors we are into types like Daitoli, Berry, Reid etc. All are on the smaller side. I wouldn't pay attention to rumors until Twomey releases his first possible mock draft this weekend coming I think? After that, he tends to start getting some info filtered through about who clubs fancy.

Completely agree. This is why I was keen on Noah Mraz which Herald Sun have claimed GWS are into as early as first round.

I still really rate Hannaford, would happily pick him at 17. Pace, contested, kicks goals, yes please. I was meaning I would love to know clubs thoughts on the character value (i have no insight at all into this).

Herald Sun claimed that we have done extra work on Trainor lately. There was a few ITK nuggets in that article. They claimed we have been “strongly linked to Hynes” along with Melbourne who may trade back to teen picks to double up selections. It had been suggested that St Kilda are entertaining sliding back but thats the first ive heard of Melbourne doing it.

Endless possible scenarios and still plenty to play out. Cant remember a draft like it.

Remember the young Luke Kennedy name being mentioned in here

The top 15 of this draft might not be the best ever, but the next 40 all seem really strong compared to most years. It feels like picks 15-50 are a super group of 2nd tier picks. Likely to be heaps of exciting options right up to our last pick. They have Kennedy going at 63 in the SEN draft.

To be fair I'm only going off write ups and videos, but that's the same as every year.
