FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

I’m definitely missing something with Hotton, no way I’m using any of our first 2 on him regardless of injury concerns.
Berry , Hannaford both great fits for our lists , then best talent available.
I see a little Bob Murphy in his movement King which I like a lot however nowhere near his kicking skills. I'd be OK with a 2nd round selection for him.

Reid - You just cant teach quick thinking and composure and its worth its weight in gold in the next level. He will develop an AFL body and skills are already very tidy although lacks penetration on kick. Definitely inside/outside mix mid at next level in prime. Could start high half forward but would be a slow burn there. Doesnt help our flag tilt in next few years but does replenish ageing midfield nicely.
I agree with your post but just wanted to highlight this point which I have seen mentioned a few times.

Here is Reid kicking a goal from 60+

Granted it bounced through and should have been touched by the defense, but it is a fair strike.
I think he lacks the penetration that some of the best kicks have and as result looks more for the short hit ups in general play, but I think in an elite environment he should develop a 50m kick comfortably.

So Hokball - utilize the complete playing surface using wings and flankers who can run well, make good decisions and kick well. We need to emulate this to some extent and we certainly need to be able to defend it.

I think kick well is the key ingredient here, with a lesser emphasis on speed but you dont want slugs.

Yeah I agree. He has obvious athleticism, but his decision making and disposal look questionable.
I watched a full game highlight reel where I don't think one kick was to the advantage of a team mate and many were direct turnovers.
In contrast I watched a full game highlight reel of Lindsay where every kick was damaging and seemed to be retained by his team. Admittedly he was picking up a lot of uncontested possession.

Trainor would have to be very tempting if he lasts to our pick especially if he is still there at our second pick in particular. He is a high level talent, understand the worrying nature of his early concussions but he is worth the risk at that later stage. IMO.
Yep him and Hotton are so talented that at some point you just draft them.

It's an even draft and he doesn't fill a big need for us. I'd rather take a safer option that fills a need.

Junior footy isn't overly physical, I'm very worried that he's had 4 already. The likely hood of him suffering concussion at AFL/VFL level would have to be quite high.

EDIT: We've had a pretty bad run with concussion, Picken, O'Driscoll, Libba etc. We would have to be one of the worst clubs for it and Beveridge has stated several times that we are very conservative with players that have suffered concussion. I'm not sure we should be taking player's with a history of it.

Is his concussion history any worse than JOD who we just signed through 2027?

Probably more reason to avoid Trainor tbh, we already have a young player with a concussion history that plays the same position. Add in the question marks that remain on Busslinger and we’d be putting a lot of risk in our KPD stocks.

I think if trainor is there we pick him just in my opinion he has alot of talent

Not really relevant to us, but Hun journos ringing around and going with a top 8 of:

1 - Lalor (Rich)
2 - Tauru (NM)
3-6 (order undecided) - Ashcroft, Smith, O'Sullivan, Draper
7 - Smillie (Rich)
8 - Langford (StK)

Apparently StKilda 2nd pick a good chance to be traded down, possibly with GWS (combo of 15, 16, 21).

Don't mind this as GWS seem to have interest in similar players as us. Saints more likely to go tall at 15/16.

cat B rookie vs. a 1st round pick?
I thought the discussion was more around using our 2nd not 1st pick but maybe got that wrong. For our 1st pick I wouldn’t go there on list need alone.

That JOD was picked up as a Cat B rookie doesn’t mean anything now. My point is that if this kid is the best KPD in the draft and has a less serious concussion history than a guy we just committed to for 3 years (which I’m fine with) then I wouldn’t shy away from using pick 25-30 on him.

The Age Phantom Draft came out today which they apparently surveyed 13 recruiters to guess the first 27 picks. I don't want to get assassinated by big media so I won't post it, but has us getting Murphy Reid at 20. Mentions we are interested in Tom Gross also later on.

Reid and Hannaford would be great with our first two.

Did they have Hannaford going anywhere in that 27?

Hotton thinks the two most likely landing spots for him are Richmond or GWS
After a navicular bone issue, an ACL, ACL complications and a follow-up surgery on the same knee (all this year) Richmond and GWS are the only clubs that can afford the risk.

I want Murphy so bad I'm prepared to live with Tom Gross with our second. I just don't see Murphy sliding.

No to Gross with our 2nd for me.
3rd ok, but I prefer we find a small/ medium defender.

Reid oozes class , but he may take a couple of years of physical development.
Could be worth the wait !

Pair Reid with Angus Clarke and we’re off and running. Josh Dolan and Sam Davidson complete it.

There was an article about Clarke earning money for his flights to and from footy by chopping and splitting firewood to sell. He’d have some real functional core strength that a lot of young fellas wouldn’t have.

👍 I’m also a fan of Clarke
Just seems to do everything extremely well.
