FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

Honestly, a good chance we get none of them as well. Feels like pick 17 is in a slightly awkward spot. We could just miss out on Berry, Reid, Hotton. Whilst it is a slight reach for say, Hannaford. The other players we have been linked to at 17 don't seem to be quite popular on here.

Hynes or Oliver would be my picks in that case. Oliver is a real tough nut in the back line and has a great kick, those qualities alone would take him a long way.

Apparently Murphy Reid will fall to our pick. Sydney teams think he will be a flight risk if taken out of vic.

Other clubs not sure if he is more of a James Aish/Lewis Taylor type or whether he has the ability to develop an inside game and play midfield.

What do the draft watchers here think of him?
From the limited footage I've seen I really like him. I think his lack of speed is overblown, and he's clearly got a great footy brain and moves really well. He'd be an absolute steal at our first pick. I suspect another team trades up just before us and takes him though.

they are saying elite kick for oliver which is what I like. that doesnt often come with grunt and intercepting ability.

If you could draft Ed richards again with a 2nd round pick, on the proviso that he only ever played in defence, would you?

Yeah I've seen people talk about how you can throw anyone with talent that you find later behind the ball and they'll be good so you shouldn't recruit a defender early but there's a difference between a flanker and a genuine defensive stopper who can also hurt on the rebound.

My concern with Reid is that we just moved on MacRae and Daniel because they didn't have the transition speed to play outside roles and could be liabilities defensively.
I wouldn't want to replace them with someone who has similar deficiencies, especially when our team can struggle with the defensive side of the game
I think Macrae and Daniel were moved on because they couldn't play the forward role the way we wanted, because they didn't like being 'fringe' selections, and mostly because of their large contracts.

Reid is very different, he could play the forward creative role early or develop in the 2's until Treloar/Libba finish up.
He will possibly be part of a rejigged midfield that will include Sanders and Richards who will bring a defensive edge, and he may end up swapping with Bont in that creative, offensive role.

He is also a kid who has been fed the ball his whole junior career. I think we can be hopeful that he will develop a defensive aspect in an AFL environment in the same way that you might hope another prospect would improve his workrate or disposal. In fact it should be one of the easier things to work on as it is a game style adjustment rather than a physical one. As previously mentioned there should be no physical reason he can't add to his defensive game.

Same reason why Sanders spent considerable time in the VFL.

I think we were pretty happy to hang on to Caleb as a mr fixit until north made an offer we couldnt refuse

I like the look of Oliver but to call him the next Ed Richards is abit premature.

surely you just take each player on their merits? Richards came to us as a defender and even if he hadnt of been able to make the move to the midfield, hed be a damn good one.
Our best forward was drafted as a defender too

Who’s the closest to Baz type player that could be around our pick? Hes the one we need to replace.
Luke Urquhart tested well for pace and endurance and is a terrible kick, should be available late.

He nearly pipped 3 seconds in 20m sprint. That’s not slow.

I compared this to Caleb Serong a while back, he was taller, faster agility and 20m sprint. Have you ever watched him play and thought he was slow? I haven’t.

In today's game (and especially against us with our handball game) teams try and put extra numbers around the footy. You can combat that with power driving out the stoppage breaking tackles (which richards does) or elite handballing/vision/composure.

Can never have too many composed midfielders given pressure on ball has never been higher.

Reid would be a great get at 17 (prob 21 after bids).

Our second pick is going to have some heartbreak….most likely Harry Oliver, Ollie Hannaford, Cooper Hynes all gone by 25 (29).

I would like too see us slide up, To get one of tigers, gws or Sydney selections to get one of those 3.

Would cost perhaps 25 and future third? Future second is maybe too hefty a price? especially if we just decide to take Trainor who is probably still there.

Would be flat about Dattoli or Gross due to athletic profiles but would back the club in.

Herald Sun has linked us to Ivisic which is a new one, we seem to be targeting talented distributors as well as pacey ground ball types.
I think trading up must be something we're at least considering.

Richmond have 4 picks in the 18-24 range, so would be the obvious team to approach.

Something like our 35+F2 for 23 would be ideal. Makes sense for them to strengthen next year, they'd still get who they mainly want in the area with 18 & 20.

17, 23 and 25 with our first 3 would be nice.

I'm not a watcher of Coates League so only going by short videos, but all of Ough's highlights are uncontested marks and kicks in the defensive 50. Seems very average.
He is the Joel Freijah of this draft but more inside. He is a good user and is well composed, also very good defensively.

I think his lack of contested game is overstated. Nick Daicos has zero contested game and yet he’s one of the best in the competition because of what he offers offensively.

Reid is like Daicos without the top end speed, but certainly isn’t slow. He comes in and plays the role Daniel was filling. Offers something different from what we will get from Richards and Sanders long term. Would be a fantastic pick if he slides to us

Like many others, I think Hannaford is a perfect list fit and I love his highlights. But if Murphy Reid slides, you take him 100%. I'd be thrilled if Hannaford lasted until our second, a Reid/Hannaford combo would be the dream.

Would love Oliver or Angus Clarke at our second, and use our third on either a mid or forward, depending on if we get Reid or Hannaford at 17.

Also happy to use our fourth on Davidson if he's there.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve only seen the various YouTube videos but I’m in what seems to be a minority that don’t think he’s the best fit for us. He’s a great user, creative with ball in hand and composed, but he’s small, one-paced in game, hasn’t really demonstrated an AFL level inside mid game and won’t be a pressure forward at AFL level. I’m not sure where he fits. Others think he’d be a good partner with Sanders, I don’t.

(I'm about to watch, but sounds like a little guy we just traded to North... 😬)
