FYI

Will add a 2024 NAB Draft & Trade tracker thread, stickied.

Tag me when we have a confirmed trade/draft and I will update the thread accordingly

I felt underwhelmed with the Hynes pick, but what should we have done? There were no sliders that we needed, and the two players I’d have reached for over Hynes went to GWS. Could have tried to get that North f1, but doubt we’d even been told it was on the table.

I remember how stoked the equivalent thread on this board was in 2022 after we nabbed Charlie Clarke.
And I remember the massive melts when we took a kid called bontempelli over the sure thing Aish. 🤣

Have we been linked to boxshall
Yeah Twomey mentioned it:
Draft picks: 17, 25, 35, 48, 83, 90 (likely to use four or five selections)

The Dogs will use as at least four picks across both nights of the draft and there should be some quality options available at their third live pick. Midfielder Hugh Boxshall, who has some Josh Dunkley traits in his size and strength, could be around the mark as will half-back Lachie Jaques, who has been linked to clubs in the second round. Runner Hamish Davis and midfielder/forward Tom Gross are others in that group of possible contenders for the Dogs. Geelong Falcons midfielder Xavier Ivisic and dashing defender Blake Leidler could be worth a look later on in the piece.

Yeah Twomey mentioned it:
Honestly sounds like a pretty decent late owl pick this kid. sub 2.9 20m is just insane

Blake Leidler

STRENGTHS:

  • Kick penetration
  • One-on-ones
  • Speed
  • Versatility

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Composure
  • Decision making

A dashing, daring defender who can also hold his own one-on-one, Blake Leidler has plenty of weapons in his arsenal. He proved during the APS season with Wesley College that he can go forward, has been tasked with shutting down dangerous opponents like Jesse Dattoli and Oliver Hannaford, and boasts electric speed - as shown by his 2.89-second 20m sprint at the state draft combine.

Leidler arguably played his best football down back and when not made to lock down on a direct opponent, showcased his aggressive rebound running ability. He's capable of relentlessly overlapping through the corridor and connecting the field in a flash, before compounding the metres gained effect by thumping a long kick forward. Such ability to go end-to-end suits the moderns game.

While his whirlwind attacking forays make for great entertainment, becoming a more accountable defender came with the education of being a touch less so. He could also be a touch more composed when setting off forward, which will help his decision making process and thus iron out his overall execution. Though, you don't want to take away all the positive instincts that make him so unique.

DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie

Do you think we would take Davis now we’ve selected Hynes because both will probably start their careers up forward

Although I think Davis has also played down back as well, so maybe it’s not an issue
There was an article were Milesi was talking about the draft in one of the rags were he says something about not liking taking all the same types of player. Based on that now we have taken a fwd/mid I think we will try and balance out our draft a bit. So it really depends on what we view Davis as and if we see him as being too much like Hynes or not.

I don't think you can run a 7.8 sec agility and be slow re: Boxshall

think I read somewhere he played as a running defender before moving into the middle of the ground because of a positional change by his coach
Lachie Hunter did it in 8.25 seconds and was first in his year
I think they’re talking about straight running speed

We might still be able to grab a future 1st for Shanahan or Jack Whitlock at pick 29 tomorrow. I really hope we cash in on that value...

If that is on the offer and we just go no thanks and pick Moreas, I will be quite sad. I don't mind him as a pick, but the value from these desperate teams needs to be taken advantage on.
Thing is, clubs know we won't draft those key fwds, so they wouldn't bother trading with us.

From this point I'm hoping for Barrat, Clarke, Urquhart and Unwin

Would we take another 4 picks though?

I’d be happy taking Barrat with our next pick, then one of whoever is still there from Ough/Moraes/Clarke.

KPD’s take time & we need one in the pipeline developing, when I first read up on Barrat a few months ago he ticked all the boxes really.

Gabriel Stumpf could have potential as a half forward (or anywhere for that matter), he may be 196cm but a 2.81 20m is insane. Has a late birthday as well so plenty of development left.

Barrat and Clarke are always getting mentioned as been really hard workers by every man & his dog. So that’s a good sign.

It might not be the sexiest draft for us but I think we should come out alright with some really good young talent
