Freo ignoring him at the draft is not relevant to the here and now. So did everyone else.
Why isn't it? I said the same thing when Dawson said he wanted to go to the Crows.
We were the ones that took the chance on these blokes, we are the club that developed them into the players they are, and then suddenly the wags go boo hoo I wanna go home and they want to run back to clubs that had rejected them multiple times. In my eyes there's relevance there.

Bloody thankful that Heeney and Gulden are NSW boys! What a perfect advertisement for why we need the academy.

Heeney just proved the whole point of the academy as Eddie had to deflect because it made him look dumb. You have 75% of your team from out of state compared to other clubs in the 30-40% alongside little to no go home to NSW factor it makes academies vital

This is why I'm a fan of a tax, and also a fan of larger original contracts (length). I'd implement a trading tax and the tax increases per the contract length and amount, similar to free agency. The club that trades the player would get the amount in their cap as relief. It should be a 5 year contract for first round contracts I've said this for years. I get the reasons with the JHF thing but players should NOT be able to be traded 1 year into a contract as a no1 pick!

They are vital, I do like the new rules though they will be fair for everyone, we won't have the GC farce last year.

Yep i like the new rules but can also see how they get stuffed around by hiding players etc, cause all they have to do is hide a player enough that they are out of the top 10-15 range and it makes it soo much easier to match

I know what you mean, but Dawson is now financially set up for life and he has a nicer house than he could have got in Sydney as well as closer to friends and family, and a happier partner. I would probably ruin my career for that.
Dawson has chosen the path of the last man. I feel sorry for him.

The most annoying aspect is that we never seem to be the beneficiary of a player wanting to walk away from a successful club, while entering the prime of their career.

When we land a big fish it’s someone at the end of their career (Grundy) or when we lured Franklin it was on a record deal even though he supposedly came to us. It’s never easy.

But just in the last decade we’ve lost Tom Mitchell (Brownlow medalist), Dawson (AA and club captain) and now Warner (AA). All three genuinely rated as stars when we lost them and there’s no shot of really being adequately compensated.

Forgive me for not wishing them well on the way out when we’ve created a winning environment for all of them for very little reward.

This only makes a flag this year even more crucial as our big three is about to be decimated by 1/3. Basking in a premiership for the next 6 months will definitely soften the blow and hopefully another superstar is just around the corner for us.

Honestly, if chad has his heart set on leaving because of his woman we should probably trade him this year since we still have clout. Sell him to either one of West Coast and Fremantle. Whoever makes the best offer.

The comment was that he shouldn't go to Freo because they had ignored him. My response was that everyone had. You have correctly pointed out that we didn't, although he was our fourth pick. Not to mention drafting his brother.
If it's the wag driving the move I doubt she gives two hoots which club he plays for, just where.
That said, I think it's really poor form to grab a premiership and p*ss off, leaving the mates who helped you get it. Much, much worse than Dawson.

In the current climate it won't happen maybe a decade or two ago. It should be difficult to match a top 5 player whether it be us or another team.

Is it me or does it seem like AFL players are in committed relationships or even engaged way earlier than the average person? They’re early 20’s and already deciding on where they’ll buy a house and raise a family.

If I seem bitter about this it’s because I am, because we always seem to be on the wrong end of it.

Yeah also pisses me off. They're not even in their thirties and they're famous athletes. Shouldn't they be out enjoying life a bit?

I never said he SHOULDN'T go to Freo, I said he should remember they overlooked him multiple times = different.
Agree with the rest of your post and I was dirty on Dawson, but that will be nothing compared to how dirty I'll be at Warner if it happens.

Reality is I feel we as fans get way too invested in players. These players are humans, who on earth knows what is driving them home and it's not always money even though it seems that way. Do the WAG's have a say sure, most partners do, mine sure on earth has a big say where we live and what not and it has nothing to do with money despite me getting significantly more at my current position.

Even if we hold him next year, we get a top 5 pick, plus maybe a f1 (with a 3rd going back to WCE), that's a good return if it comes to it.

That's why I would get as much for him this off season as you can. Coming off a premiership and Norm. If it's not a godfather offer then he doesn't go and the Swans still end up with band 1 next year at worst. Then you make sure to draft his brother(s).
His brother (Ashton) won’t be drafted.

Troy is a few years away.

I’ve heard from a couple of people with fair connections through the WAFL that “Chad to WA” is seen as inevitable at the end of next season.

If my mail is true, he asked if the Swans would consider trading him at the end of this year. But was told no & he was OK with that.

This is a problematic post in a few ways.

1. I appreciate it is simply your opinion, but the idea of a trading tax flies in the face of what the AFL is trying to achieve. For reasons that escape me, the AFL is actively trying to encourage player movement. Maybe they think it adds to the entertainment? Maybe they think it helps competitive balance? I don't know. But they are not going to be introducing a tax that will inhibit trading.

2. Free agency etc has also largely been driven by the players (as rep'd by the AFLPA). They like having choice/flexibility/freedom and the option to pursue more money/flags whatever and be more in control of their careers. Like it or not players are important and powerful stakeholders in these decisions and their views have weight. Players will not want trading taxes or mandatory long contracts. They might accede to them in return for something else (e.g. they want to be paid a share of the competition's revenue).

3. It's misconceived to say "players should NOT be able to be traded 1 year into a contract as a no1 pick!" To prevent that would be a prohibition on the club at least as much as the player. As it stands clubs don't have to trade contracted players. North chose to trade JHF because they decided it was better than the alternative i.e. waiting another year and risking JHF sulking and then walking out for a lesser trade return. If they had wanted North could have said "stuff you, we're holding you to your contract" and then dealt with the situation when JHF fell out of contract. The club already has that choice.

Yeah it's a pity. But I suppose that's what happens when a majority of the talent in the AFL come from places like WA, SA, and VIC. Until there is quite a bit of supply of players being drafted into the AFL from places like NSW and QLD we'll probably be on the receiving end of Warner, Dawson, Mitchell situations more often than not.

But, on the positive side, the academy at least gives us a pretty good leg-up at getting the best of the NSW crop on the cheap during the draft, lol.

Fair on points 1 and 2, I don't agree on the tax thing I think it works.

Increase first round contracts to 5 years, this means clubs to get a player have to offer SIGNIFICANTLY more rather than the usual 3 year deal.

We share with GWS. Do they still have priority in the Riverina?
