Kevin Sheehan’s 2024 Telstra AFL Draft top prospects: Tall defenders
AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan has released profiles on the top tall defenders in the 2024 Telstra AFL Draft poolwww.afl.com.au
Would be awfully disappointing if we went to only 36 on the main list given that the AFL gives us picks at the end of the draft due to open list spots. Effectively meaning we would rather have worse players on rookie A deals rather than senior list players
Yes, but if we're moving senior players onto the rookie list, why wouldn't we have the money to get in draftees via the ND instead of the rookie draft.Financial reasons why we do it, a rookie pick costs a bucket less and also new rookie rules you can keep them there for longer.
Sid can do the spectacular but goes missing at times and can take some bad options. I don't think he has Blakey's talent but he reminds me of him so maybe a move behind the ball might help level out his output. Or try to turn him into a medium forward given he has a bit of height and can kick goals from long range.Personally, I can see them moving Sid back into defence over the offseason, going into 2025
Worked with Roberts, and they’ll try and replica it with Sid
That proves a point for meRare that i agree with Bedford. No point in getting a 27 year old 193cm player that does literally nothing well and has so many weakness.
Our pick 44 from North probably becomes a pick in the late 30s due to other teams using multiple picks to match bids. So I think there will be some good players that slide to our 3rd pick.
Angus Clarke at 37 in the consensus rankings seems quite highly rated as a medium defender who can attack and defend.
Also with Gerreyn, Barrat, Mraz and Sims rated as in the mids 30s. There is probably still going to be some good talls available at that pick.
PassWell he shouldn't be in the top 50, not in my top 50, we will take him but it sure better not be before 3 live selections
Pass
swans..?
We'll match him anywhere after our first 2 picks, guaranteed.3 selections then Cochrane should be the go. Non fussed matching a bid after that

Clubs are playing games if he goes before the 50's - he's 50/50 to make the ND in my book.

We'll get another pick. What we'd be saying is the positions lost between 40 and our next pick (likely to come in) and the difference in a player at about 40 and Cochran, significantly outweighs the message it would send to existing and future academy prospects.Wasted draft capital if so.

You don't know that until they've played.Wasted draft capital if so.
It's not for optics. That last bit is the crux of it, if we match that bid ahead of better ranked players, our academy/club doesn't really get a discount
Matching for optics is a slippery slope
You don't know that until they've played.
How? If we feel he is worth pick in the late 20s and we match him with our 2 late picks. What is the waste?Wasted draft capital if so.
How is this related to matching an earlier academy bid?If someone is ranked 55 and you take them at 40 it’s silly, trade back and do it. Same with first rounds don’t reach trade back and bank picks either this year or next
It's not for optics.
If a kid is being courted by rugby league clubs etc or has other options even earlier, and he starts seeing us let academy kids go elsewhere without it being a big cost to us to match, you might take the option that keeps you on the eastern coast, likely close to home.
