Other sides have played small forwards in the first year, apart from the Horse is as stubborn as a mule why on earth couldn't Hannaford for instance play? He's got the tricks and will put pressure on that's all we need for the second smallish player in there. The KPF isn't for next year but we need some depth badly.

It will be WCE not Freo anyway we have to worry about with Chad. He'll sign for 2 years anyway.

Our 2027 could be a top 6-8 selection, yes it is diluted a bit but it's still a top 15 pick (at worst)
No reason Hannaford or Dattoli can't play next year looking at them and their tape. Same with Hynes if we went that way.

I'd even play either Whitlock over anyone we have in KP reserve in a lot of games tbh - just to get games into them. Is he going to do less than our three KPFs or reserve KPDs in most games? Hardly seems possible.

Gruzewski would have been nice. He's broken through to play a few games, performing in VFL.

Great that’s one, he was seen as a punt by GWS. It just was a flat out poor draft limited by COVID footy. Bunch of Hail Marys

I think it's funny that the draft & trade thread where we pick up new players is 425 pages long but the reserves thread where we get to actually watch those new players is only 118 pages.

It's about the potential shiny new toys, not the existing one's sadly

If Buller and Hamling are fit, then we have 5 KPF options that would be better than the Whitlocks in 2025.

It wasn't a punt, why do you make things up? He was rated where he got picked up.

Was rated a bit lower but be that as it may it was one bloke the rest of the talls everyone wanted have flopped. It just was a terrible draft Hawks just struck gold on the roulette wheel that’s all. Bar the top 10 you were taking almighty swings that year. Not going to blame recruiters that year

Well our reserve “coaches” love to play defenders everywhere lol

Grundy, Rampe, Melican, Aliir say hi.

Stewart, Ryan, Sicily, McGovern, Wilkie etc.
Grundy was drafted as a key forward. Meli as a running & intercepting HB. Sicily was drafted as a forward. Stewart was a Mature Ager who went to the mid season draft with Cats as only suitor. Rampe was intended for HB & was never higher than he was drafted at. He was a Rookie selection & the only suitor once again were the Swans. Christ, he was playing for Uni NSW/Easts at the time after trying out for Footscray. Ryan was overlooked in the 2015 draft but Freo picked him up cheap in 2016. Did McGovern slide? There is a long slide to be rated then only get Rookied.

But I do understand your premise, that not all great Key Defenders come from the early part of the draft. In fact, over the years, failed forwards have often made the greatest defenders. Alex Jesaulenko started out as a star CHF & ended up as a star CHB, same with Peter Knights. Grundy, Ted Richards, Liam Jones, Sicily, Grundy, McCartins T & P, Chris Langford (Wing/2nd Ruck resting forward). While, Alastair Lynch went the other way. Being Full Back for Fitzroy, then FF for the Lions.

Twomey rated him 25/26 in his final Top 30s, he went at 22. What a punt/reach by the Giants!

The whole Weddle shenanigans is actually pretty indefensible made worse by the arrogance of KB afterwards who thought he was the smartest man in the room

It was fine it’s only after the fact and a couple years later it looks bad. At the time most thought it was a smart idea. The draft was heavily unknown that year players had no games or a few at most due to restrictions

Not all of us were happy.

I didn't mind the pick swap, but then to grab a small forward and flub the next pick (a significant reach), is very poor.

I think some recruiters made too many excuses around the post-Covid drafts.

I don't care if they didn't rate the talls. We needed talls, so just do your job and pick the best you can find. Other clubs had no such issues picking them.

Most of those talls went the same way as Konstanty, yes it didn’t work but GwS would have taken him if we didn’t wasn’t a poor pick. Happens we now need small forwards so it was a need.

I’m all for bagging recruiters but that draft is a pass unless you were picking in the top 10

Gruzewski as mentioned. And you can't tell me we wouldn't have been a better club for Barnett to be drafted to.

Our development isn't great, but imagine being at the Eagles.

And again, we have small fwd options, so it's not one of our main needs, but we know where this goes.

Barnett who hasn’t or barely played? You mean that one? Was bad enough taking smalls which are safer picks let alone keys that year, Guezeski is one and good on GWS, it was a poor year all round
