It was a good list call last year. He's really come on as a player, the extra 6 or so CM he's grown don't do any harm either. All the signs of a classic late bloomer, glad he's still tied to us as a FS.
What's the kicking like?
The thing is though the AFL does pay for it as the northern clubs are AFL funded.Fist a disclaimer. I am a Hawthorn supporter but also involved in a Northern Academy. This is a massive misunderstanding by Victorian's. the Academies were never set up for non AFL playing kids. This has been mentioned a ton of times but is untrue. The Academies work as the key elite development pathways in the northern states. It is essentially the elite coaching that the Vic kids get in the Coates leagues.
So basically any kid in the Northern states who wants to follow his elite pathway needs to be in an academy or he will miss out and not be developed. Copper would not get exposure to any elite coaching if he was excluded from the Academy and would most likely not make it as a result.
Now the AFL does not fund these Academies, they don't fund any elite talet pathways in NSW and QLD. The only way to fix this is for the AFL to stick there hand in there pocket and fund an elite pathway for juniors in NSW and QLD. Until then the clubs who pay for the elite development will want some form of access as a result.
Phillips (if we keep) and Scaife will replace them.I think we have to upgrade Ramsden and Blanck. So we there will be a shuffle and a rookie spot free I feel.
Ned getting chance to show his wares at Box Hill, Will back from injury and showing a bit already,
Calsher doing very well in the seniors.
We are a Family Club.
I'm sure the AFL are fully aware of what they are doing here to get the outcome that they want.Thank you for that sensible reply, the motivations are much clearer now. As usual the barrier to the best outcome is the AFL actually properly investing in grassroots football. Stop propping up basketcases like North and STK, and reinvest that money into development pathways to ensure the remaining competition is at the highest level.

Ky is a fair way below AFL standard tbhKy Burgoyne still a possibility for a rookie spot surely.
So good having F.Maginness, Dear, McCabe around the club. Hopefully a few more to come soon.
Coates league development is not even close to what the academies are. The only thing close to that is the next gen academies which have their own requirements.Fist a disclaimer. That’s what I’ve heard. Neither club will draft him.Ky is a fair way below AFL standard tbh
it bothers me that the sponsor logo on both jumpers is different.
Definitely rookie if his brother is going to be half decent. That’s what I’ve heard. Neither club will draft him.
Would suck to be the kid we chose not to rookie (for a non-AFL standard player) who could have ended up being Luke Breust or Jai NewcombeDefinitely rookie if his brother is going to be half decent.
Disrespectful to draft someone just to improve the chances of getting someone else.Definitely rookie if his brother is going to be half decent.
Collingwood did it - twice.Disrespectful to draft someone just to improve the chances of getting someone else.
I’d like to think our club would hold itself to a higher standard. These are people we’re dealing with and Ky is the son of a Hawthorn champion.Collingwood did it - twice.

If his current level isn’t even worth a rookie list spot then I think the club probably takes the same approach as they did with Ned last year. Have him not nominate for the draft so he can retain F/S eligibility next year, give him a list of things to work on and support him as much as is allowed and then reassess next year. Perhaps sign him to Box Hill so the club can be more actively involved in developing him to the level.
That at least shows respect for him as an individual and hopefully demonstrates some investment in his future.
