Fist a disclaimer. I am a Hawthorn supporter but also involved in a Northern Academy. This is a massive misunderstanding by Victorian's. the Academies were never set up for non AFL playing kids. This has been mentioned a ton of times but is untrue. The Academies work as the key elite development pathways in the northern states. It is essentially the elite coaching that the Vic kids get in the Coates leagues.

So basically any kid in the Northern states who wants to follow his elite pathway needs to be in an academy or he will miss out and not be developed. Copper would not get exposure to any elite coaching if he was excluded from the Academy and would most likely not make it as a result.

Now the AFL does not fund these Academies, they don't fund any elite talet pathways in NSW and QLD. The only way to fix this is for the AFL to stick there hand in there pocket and fund an elite pathway for juniors in NSW and QLD. Until then the clubs who pay for the elite development will want some form of access as a result.
The thing is though the AFL does pay for it as the northern clubs are AFL funded.

Also only those clubs are allowed academies.

If it's about creating an elite pathway than the more the merrier to serve the kids. West Coast and Hawthorn can set up academies and get priority access NSW and QLD teams.

Thank you for that sensible reply, the motivations are much clearer now. As usual the barrier to the best outcome is the AFL actually properly investing in grassroots football. Stop propping up basketcases like North and STK, and reinvest that money into development pathways to ensure the remaining competition is at the highest level.
I'm sure the AFL are fully aware of what they are doing here to get the outcome that they want.

But the AFL funds those clubs. They're not financially stand alone are they, so the answer is simple, it's just book keeping at present to make the argument hold for the status quo.

The TV deals doesn't want to see those clubs struggling at the bottom of the ladder devoid of hope.

There isn't the will to take this advantage away, if there was the AFL would fund those clubs less and directly fund the academies.

GWS and GC are the two most funded clubs, Brisbane is 3rd and Sydney in 9th.

They're not funding those academies themselves, they're being given money to fund them. It couldn't be clearer.

Coates league development is not even close to what the academies are. The only thing close to that is the next gen academies which have their own requirements.

Definitely rookie if his brother is going to be half decent.
Would suck to be the kid we chose not to rookie (for a non-AFL standard player) who could have ended up being Luke Breust or Jai Newcombe

Disrespectful to draft someone just to improve the chances of getting someone else.

If his current level isn’t even worth a rookie list spot then I think the club probably takes the same approach as they did with Ned last year. Have him not nominate for the draft so he can retain F/S eligibility next year, give him a list of things to work on and support him as much as is allowed and then reassess next year. Perhaps sign him to Box Hill so the club can be more actively involved in developing him to the level.

That at least shows respect for him as an individual and hopefully demonstrates some investment in his future.

Collingwood did it - twice.
I’d like to think our club would hold itself to a higher standard. These are people we’re dealing with and Ky is the son of a Hawthorn champion.

Defeatist attitude. You want another Cooper Hodge just to take the "high" ground? Please
