If the draft is shallow then why would a club trade a 1st round pick for late picks?Twomey on his podcast today flagged that there’s likely to be less than 60 picks at this year’s draft.
This had already been mentioned last week on the draft board by some with contacts to recruiters.
Removing academy tied and father son kids kids from the pool, I’d much prefer to get hold of a pick inside 20 this year, than go to the draft with two or three of our current picks.
Hoping Bulldogs trade for GC’s first round pick, and we bundle up our picks to try and get our original first round pick back from Gold Coast.
Points. If the draft is shallow then why would a club trade a 1st round pick for late picks?
Talent shortage?
Some AFL recruiters and list bosses think as few as 50 players could be drafted this year as list sizes and a shallower group of prospects combine to put the squeeze on.
A total of 59 players were selected in last year’s national draft, and 65 the year before that, so it would be a significant drop if that scenario played out.
There are even clubs that think this year’s draft class is barely 40 players deep once academy and father-son prospects are removed from the equation, although others expect about 60 new footballers to enter the system.
Gold Coast are set to match bids on top-10-calibre academy talents Jed Walter, Ethan Read and Jake Rogers, while another internal product, Will Graham, is tipped to be off the board before pick 30.
Don’t know. Leigh Matthews certainly believes Gold Coast won’t do us any favours because of the incident.Could what happened with Zorko and Miller and the strained relations between the clubs as a result extend to trade period or is that tin foil hat stuff?
Given the players and picks moving back and forth over the years despite some of the niggle on field, I don't see why it'd start now.Could what happened with Zorko and Miller and the strained relations between the clubs as a result extend to trade period or is that tin foil hat stuff?
I would imagine it would all depend on which club offers them the best deal?Given the players and picks moving back and forth over the years despite some of the niggle on field, I don't see why it'd start now.
Well I definitely don't think they'll preferentially give us a better deal because of Miller/Zorko.I would imagine it would all depend on which club offers them the best deal?
It’s all Zorko’s fault!Well I definitely don't think they'll preferentially give us a better deal because of Miller/Zorko.

A player from our academy starting to get some recognition on the draft board, 2024 draft 198cm key position forward ...Charlie Hewitt.
Would be great if we could get an academy KPF gun coming through at the exact time we need him.
It’s only tuff if we make the preliminary finals and have more than 1 academy kid as a probable first round selection.Makes it tight with levi and marshall from same draft. Good problem to have though.
2024 draft too?Should be keeping an eye on Jow Kennedy in the Suns academy who is father son to Brisbane as well.
Levi Ashcroft, Sam Marshall, Ryan Gilder and Charlie Hewitt. It will be an interesting watch next year, particularly if Hewitt and Gilder were to elevate themselves to 2nd or 3rd round prospects.
Have you got around to watching yesterday’s game yet?Gillett is miles better than Hewitt, not even comparable.
2024 draft too?
Would be great to have another father-son, but my hopes aren't high, given he's in their academy. Thank god they sacked Marcus Ashcroft.
Just finished watching the second quarter, and Gilder played the whole quarter as a defender. Didn't have a lot to do, as QLD was on the offensive a lot. He did come up and intercept a VC attack down the far wing, but tried to take the game on through congestion, and turned the ball over.Gilder played, wore #17 and played in the midfield.
I really hope he comes on and doesn't break my heart like kobe tozer.A player from our academy starting to get some recognition on the draft board, 2024 draft 198cm key position forward ...Charlie Hewitt.

Lol there's more chance of winning a jackpot at the pokies than landing a gun mature age recruit.Shallow draft opens the door for mature age recruits, which is something I like.
Like we have been talking about, plenty of players aren't ready at 18 but have afl potential by 20.
