He played mostly on ball in the 2 Under 16 club games I saw him in and he really stood out for attack on the ball/man and evasiveness... albeit it was of course a lower level of footy as compared to National/State champs.
Long way to go yet, and we need to see these boys playing at a higher level, because the Div 2 national championships (effectively playing a round robin academy series) is not that strong of a competition.

So in terms of potential draftees coming through our academy we have Marshall and Gilder next year and Annable, Bridge and Geesu the year after?
Tom Gillet, 200cm key forward gets talked up a bit at QAFL colts.

2025, I have as potential draftees:

Daniel Annabel MID 183cm (Vic Point)

Harrison Bridge HBF 181cm (Sherwood)

Raphael Geesu SF 175cm (Vic Point)

Oscar Barry DEF 187cm (Coorparoo)

Jack Slater MID 184cm (Sherwood)

Jack Harrison MID 183cm (Sherwood)

Ben Lillico MID 176cm (Morningside)

Depends how often the team with the first pick actually picks the highest rated kid, according to the media and draft watchers.

Petracca was widely considered the best kid in his draft year, but went at pick 2.

Cadman wasn’t even considered a top 5 prospect, until GWS flagged their interest in him.

Rowell was considered the best 18 player in his draft year, but Anderson was considered to have a higher ceiling, and could be the best player from his year if he meets his potential.

Teams still draft for need at pick one, while other teams draft the best U18, can’t miss kid (Rowell, Walsh, etc), but that kid often doesn’t have the highest potential/ceiling.

Is McCluggage another example? Surely McGrath wasn't considered the best by most.

Can't speak for club recruiters obviously, but on the draft board and from Twomey, Will Brodie was the preseason talk, once the season proper got underway McCluggage, especially after the championships, was number 1 with most draft watchers. I don't believe McGrath was a pick for need at pick 1, more that Dodoro just rated McGrath higher, and apparently had close links to him/family.

I remember McGrath having a very impressive finals series in the NAB u18's (not sure if that's the right name). He was regarded as a great young leader and his performances on the athletics track were pretty impressive as well. So there was a bit there to like about him. We got so lucky really that Essendon were committed to him and then GWS were sold on Taranto. We got the guy we wanted despite sliding to three in the draft and his mate for free!!

McGrath and McCluggage were both consensus number 1s, it was viewed as a 50/50 call that you couldn't lose at the time.

Levi in the conversation for pick 1 next year or is that to high for him?
There are some really talented bottom agers for next year. Jagga Smith, Finn O'sullivan, Simile, Draper and Welsh.

Really stacked with midfielders and looks a super draft. I think Levi should be in the top 5-8 range if he continues to develop well.

Arguably 3-4 of the best 6 on the ground in Vic Metro V Vic Country were bottom agers.

Really hope we play minimal overagers in next year’s academy team, but play a lot of our 17 year olds in the team.

could not agree more! Same with the u16 team this year, should have had more 15 year olds, instead of filling it with 17 year olds. Probably explains why the Suns had 5 in the AA side while Lions had 2.

Would have been nice to see young Hodge running around instead of some 17 year old who won't get a Level 3 game next year anyway

Hi Briz, did Raphael Geesu play much in the carnival and if so what did you think of him?

Good player. Another one inexplicably left out of the QLD u15 team last year. They really need to pick some QLD sides through club footy at that age.

Ben Lillico is David's lad?

yes, but a completely different type of player.

I started a poll Hugh V McGrath in 2017 or 2018. The voting was heavily pro McGrath in the beginning with some even mocking the very idea that Hugh was better (mostly bomber fans). But slowly Hugh gained ground to where he is now considered the far superior player even by Bomber fans

I am in a private chat with a few who get some good mail occasionally, one of them saying the Demons are pushing hard and looking ok to grab pick 1, Jacob Van Rooyen would be part of the deal... as it stands now the Demons also have picks 4 and 15 in this years draft.
Would be surprised if they are prepared to give up their young key forward.

Their forward line is already their weakest area so could hurt them long term although Tracc could probably just replace JVR as an almost full time forward if they had Oliver, Viney and Reid in the midfield.

Another 36 disposals and 2 goals for Levi Ashcroft in the Coates Talent League yesterday. At least we have him to look forward to for next year and beyond.
1 Ashcroft replaces Neale, the other replaces Zorko.

Now we just need the academy to fill in the blanks.

Gillett for Oscar
Gilder for Lester
Richardson for Andrews
McDonald for Daniher
Geesu for Charlie

Harris still only 26 years old so a good 4 years minimum left in him, we do need some development talls though.

I think it might be easier to just steal them from another club Melbourne style. Gold Coast should have developed another key defender nicely once Harris is ready to retire

Until we watch the end of season U17 match versus Vic Country, I’m not going early on our other academy kids, even though I have high hopes for a few.

I genuinely hope our academy stops playing so many over age kids in the Talent League team next year.

If he’s not drafted this year, the only one I’d have in the team would be Billy Richardson.

And I hope we pick our top 17 and 16 year olds in the team. Talent over physical maturity.

McDonald I’d have in the VFL team if he continues to play.
