Surely Mr Malice just wants another Tassie trip to tie into and incorporate one of his annual hiking / wellness junkets on the Apple isle 🤣
You got me, there is a Yoga retreat I am eyeing off that is planned for winter 2024 about an hours drive south of Hobart, would be nice if it coincided with a Lions game.

Huonville?

+1 to Mt Barker again, was great to have a big win and then head to Hahndorf to have a squillion German beers.
If it unfolds that way I think I might prioritise this next year over rushing back to Adelaide to squeeze in some more games. I am quite partial to German beverages.

Not sure yet, was talking to the owner of the studio I go to now and he said they were in the early stages of planning it, all he said was that it was at a mates studio an hour south of Hobart, I didn't ask what town.

All of Tassie is fantastic, have holidayed and trekked there a few times, although I wouldn't want to live there, too cold for me.

Indeed. Very picturesque, but yes far too cold... One of the reasons I moved to Sydney.

It can be a glorious sunny day in the city but Huonville will still find a way to be rainy and miserable. They can thank Mt Wellington for that.

2024 Fixture Predictions.
Did anyone predict this.
.........

It's understood the proposed round one fixture, which was distributed to clubs last week but is not final, would feature Greater Western Sydney kicking off the 2024 season against Collingwood on a Saturday night before Sydney plays Melbourne on the Sunday afternoon.

Every other club's season-openers would then be played the following weekend and would likely feature Carlton's annual Thursday night clash against Richmond at the MCG.

Under the floated fixture, which was sent to clubs last week and caveated by the fact it was only a draft version, the second weekend would then feature a full complement of games and be headlined by Carlton against Richmond on the Thursday night.

The four teams that played on the earlier weekend – the Giants, Magpies, Swans and Demons – would then have a bye at some point inside the season's first few weeks, enabling the remaining 14 teams to catch up on fixtures.

There was rumours about it, but the thought was that it'd be a split round - not that the four teams got an extra bye.

The bye suggestion for just 4 teams is very weird. Thats 3 byes (edit should be 2) for 4 teams and only 2 (edit should be 1) for the remaining 14 teams.

If Dillon wanted to grow the game in the northern states, why not include a Lion v ?? and Suns v ?? in Qld the same weekend.
Then you could play the other 5 games in round 2 with no need for a bye round.

Personally, i doubt doing what's proposed will lift the profile of the game in Sydney.

A possible better solution would be to start the AFL fixture the same time as the NRL. Not the usual 2 weeks later.
Every year the AFL give the NRL a free hit media wise in NSW & QLD. leading up to and including round one.

If it was a split round the teams who play in the first week are still getting a bye. They just wouldn't call it a bye 🤷‍♂️

To me it makes sense... Nobody wants a bye after 1 game, so space it out a bit to like Round 7 or 8. They really should make it so there are 11 "bye rounds" in the middle of the season (2 for the 4 teams playing first up in Round 1, say Rounds 7 and 8, then 9 for all 18 teams - Rounds 9 to 17) where each round has 8 games. Those 4 teams from Round 1 would have their 2nd bye in Round 16 or 17.

Then the following week, the two teams who had the bye play on Thursday night. It's a win-win-win:

  • More Thursday night games
  • More rounds with 8 games so less crossover of multiple matches being on at the same time
  • The issue with teams off the bye playing teams who haven't had the bye is negated

i actually really like the idea of the season opener being used to promote the game in northern states. i floated the idea of gws v gc being the season opener last year but the leagues proposal is probably better

richmond v carlton will get a lot of eyes regardless of when its played. beyond tradition i dont see why it should remain the season opener when that real estate can be used for something cool and practical like this

it would probably be better if the 4 teams playing the week earlier just didnt play the following week and round 1 is effectively split over two weeks

No offence, but I genuinely think that is a terrible idea.
Those four teams would get a clear advantage of not playing anymore than 8 games in a row throughout the season.
Like the 2 VIC teams need anymore of an advantage than playing more than 2 thirds of their games at home throughout the year let’s throw in an extra bye.
If they have a split round it is much more fair and easier to sell.
I hope the other 14 clubs say no to that idea.

Dalions goes bang!

Actually, you have a point. One of the teams involved is Collingwood. And one of the teams is Melbourne. So screw that.

Although I think a compromise can be reached. The Suns, with their impressive record on the SCG, can play Sydney, and we'll travel to the Showground to play the Giants.

Give the weekend a real state of origin feel.

Also means we won't have to play in Canberra.

I think this is a much more palatable solution.

And it will rate the house down in Victoria.

😉

If they plan on playing 2 games in 1 week then 7 the week after non issue. Just have Sydney V GWS and Collingwood V Melbourne RD3
That is not the proposal though.

4 teams will have a bye within the first few weeks to enable all the other 14 teams to catch up on the fixture.
Then the usual bye rounds for 18 teams whenever the AFL decides to have them mid seasonish.

The 4 teams will have 3 byes (edit should be 2) and the other 14 will only have 2 byes (edit should be 1)
I don't think 4 clubs will be happy.

I would have thought that the four clubs would be happy to be playing rusty folks in round two and getting a mini refresh in round 3 or 4 rather than an extra week off at the start and playing through?

Unless they are teams that traditionally suck after the bye in which case sure.

(or did you mean 'I don't think 14 clubs will be happy'?)
