Brisbane normally start the year poorly. So hopefully a win at the Gabba followed by wins v rich, Adelaide in SA, North Easter Friday, then Essendon then a bye in round 5 (round 6 when you count round 0)

Adelaide in SA?

We’ll find out soon enough when the fixture is released this coming Thursday.

My tickets are booked for Adelaide gather round. I was actually hoping we’d get the Crows again and that game would become the annual kick off to Gather round as the two teams develop a rivalry. That said I’m not unhappy about about our fixture.

Can't see it being us v Crows in Round 2. That would be 3 interstate trips in the first 5 weeks of the season.
In one sense, would be great to get them out of the way quickly, but can't see the AFL doing that to us (even though those in power at the AFL aren't the sharpest tools in the shed).

Apparently some clubs whinging that if the “extra” bye is later in the season, teams playing in round 0 would have an advantage in player management. Seriously.
Can’t fault that, to some point.
More that the ladder is out of whack for too long if the ground zero team’s byes are later in the season.

Just for man management, it has merit too. Somewhat allows for a very solid preseason with little tapering. Melbournites underestimate the heat and humidity our boys will encounter in (effectively) late Summer in Queensland. Add that to a quick back up against the Tigers on a Thursday and the boys would definitely benefit from an early bye.

From a selfish point of view, I am wondering what it will do to the timing of our likely Maroochydore/Mooloolaba training ‘camp’. Last year was trifficult (no apologies for Bluey reference) occurring after school was back in, hopefully will bring it forward to holiday time (pre Australia Day) if we are playing a full in fixture the following week. I enjoy getting little insights from the training track, particularly on developing players.

Seems like we might have a bye as early as round 2 according to the Age.

Carlton are expected to have a bye as early as round two after playing against the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba in the AFL’s new “opening round”, and then Richmond in the traditional Thursday night match played at the MCG to begin round one.

The Blues will be one of eight teams playing in the AFL’s innovative opening round that will have a bye within the first third of the season, handing their conditioning staff an early-season challenge.

Weird article because the same applies to a bunch of clubs but they headlined us like we're getting special treatment

How's the headline

'Once in a Blue moon: The quirky fixture that could have Carlton starting 2024 with a bang'

I wouldn't be diluting the season launch just to play a few games a week earlier in expansion states.

Fair bit of disrespect to AFL's primary market here. Victorians don't want to watch Round 1 on television.

Carlton v Richmond in Round 2 on a Thursday night will be lucky to draw 75k now.

Drew over 88K in Rnd 1 v Richmond on a Thursday night this year.
