Why would it be tougher? We played 4 of the top 7 as our double-ups this year, so the draw can't really be harder.

The other sides might know we are better (i.e. lose the surprise element) but we know we are better too. The belief going into this year should be greater than at any time in the past 20 years.

We lose no-one that matters and we gain a guaranteed best 22 player in Williams. Our depth is better, with only half a dozen that we ideally wouldn't want to play in the ones. Walsh should have a proper pre-season for the first time in 3 years. The surgeries are all relatively minor and no real long-termers.

We are ideally placed and better off than we were entering 2023. No excuses.
I like excuses.
They are handy!!!

Not a fan of this round 0 fixture but we start off our season with some challenging games. At least we get a bit of a sighter on Richmond and their potential new style. Hopefully the weather won't be too hot in Brisbane either.

I hope GWS cooks the 4 n 20s.

Couldn't give a stuff what it's called, another game of footy is a good thing, Lions at the Gabba early on is a great test, bring it on

Since we are getting two byes throughout the year, isn’t it still going to be a 23 game / 24 Round season?

I don't particularly care about the "traditional" opener v Richmond as while it's a marquee game it isn't really much of a tradition. It's been around for what, 10 or 15 yrs? With most of the games being a blowout one way or the other. Every year seemingly opposition fans trash the game in the lead up as it will be a stinker, perhaps not the last yr or 2 but prior to that it definitely was.

I do like playing the opening game of the season and it's great to have a marquee game, but specifically it being v Richmond is a big meh from me.

I'd have been happy if Rd 1 was against Brisbane in Brisbane but doing it in this weird round 0 kind of way is, really, just... amateurish. Screams of scrambling last minute to find a way to make an opportunity that isn't really an opportunity work.

Imo this is strictly because of the last time NRL had a week where no game was in Sydney the AFL scheduled both Sydney teams to be away, which had criticisms flying at the AFL for not capitalising - which was fair. Well now they're flocking way to far the other direction and forcing something that isn't really there.

Being reactive to the NRL has never really been an issue for the AFL before and they should keep it that way unless it works. Being paranoid about the AFL has always been the NRL, and NRL fans, MO. If the AFL starts behaving that way then we have a problem.

Though it’s been mentioned, the NRL are away in Vegas the weekend before our ground zero start.

I don't really care about the tradition. Its more that we've had that fixture for years while the tigers have been great, leading to us normally starting the season 0-1. Would like to keep it now they are going downhill so we can get off to a flyer. :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy:

Personally I think it’s poor form by the AFL, stop worrying about the other minnow sports who would kill to have our attendance & ratings.
Bris first up is the best of a bad idea, win/lose/draw it doesn’t really matter and doesn’t have a real impact - it does rule out playing them up here at the pointy end of the season when a win/loss could mean something

Most people watch 2-3 sports anyway but it reeks of a corporate mentality when the focus should be on growing the game in NRL Heartland, and I reckon there are better ways to do that. Cant say I am not looking forward to us taking on Bris at the gabba first up though.

CARLTON has been rewarded for its thrilling finals run with a blockbuster-heavy 2024 fixture, with the Blues and Grand Finalist Brisbane both scheduled for an AFL-high seven matches in prime Thursday or Friday night slots.

With the Blues also scheduled to play in the Good Friday match against North Melbourne at Marvel Stadium, Michael Voss's team will have an AFL-high eight matches on either Thursday or Friday through the opening 16 weeks of the season.
