North Melbourne
Freo

Pretty soft first few weeks.
Clarko's Kangas...are you sure it's soft? ( I hope they lose EVERY game.)
Have to get past Lions first.
Softish I guess...thank Goodness we'll have bye straight away. 🤣🤣😄

I completely agree with your sentiment, SirSanchez. But it is round zero. We need to make sure we use the correct AFL vernacular.
Yeah let's link footy to 9/11 ffs!!

Earlier the football the better , Afl is a business and it’s not a terrible idea to boost football in other states to start the season. We will get to play richmond the following week which should benefit us having a game under our belt and getting the ring rust out.

Featuring in Opening Round means the Blues are one of eight teams who will have an extra bye (additional to the mid-season bye) throughout the season, which will be taken between Rounds 2-6.

It’ll be the first time the Blues have kicked off their campaign outside of Victoria since 2004, which was the longest streak in the competition.

Prime time bitches :thumbsu:

Collingwood and Carlton are expected to feature prominently in the prime time Thursday and Friday night slots this year as the rivals and premiership heavyweights look to challenge for the 2024 flag.

Surprised they didn't put Carlton vs Brisbane on Thursday and Goldcoast vs Richmond on Friday.

Now Richmond will play round 1 coming off travel and a 5 day break (not bad for us though).

Maybe the league weren't keen on having Goldcoast on prime time and didn't want us getting the Thursday as the extra day's break would provide more of an advantage.

Brisbane vs Carlton would also be the better season opener (in my biased opinion). 2 vs 3 last year instead of 5 vs 8.

Article suggests byes for opening round teams will be staggered across rounds 2-6. 2 teams in each of round 2,3,5,6 (gather round excluded). Fingers crossed we get round 5 or 6 and not round 2 (won't be 3 due to good Friday match). The later byes will be more of an advantage.

I would say we are on Friday as it’s a long weekend in Melbourne so people can plan a weekend up north…

I wouldn't be diluting the season launch just to play a few games a week earlier in expansion states.

Fair bit of disrespect to AFL's primary market here. Victorians don't want to watch Round 1 on television.

Carlton v Richmond in Round 2 on a Thursday night will be lucky to draw 75k now.
i don't mind, give me tv afl 50 weeks a year and i'm on the couch

I don't get why they call Thursday night football prime time?

Purely an old television thing and not limited to sports or relating to attendance. Prime time TV is 7pm to about 11pm. I don't think it's super relevant anymore given how much the media landscape has changed and so too how we consume it.

My take neither soft nor overly challenging opening few games for the new season, but it will be a tougher campaign overall in 2024.

Why would it be tougher? We played 4 of the top 7 as our double-ups this year, so the draw can't really be harder.

The other sides might know we are better (i.e. lose the surprise element) but we know we are better too. The belief going into this year should be greater than at any time in the past 20 years.

We lose no-one that matters and we gain a guaranteed best 22 player in Williams. Our depth is better, with only half a dozen that we ideally wouldn't want to play in the ones. Walsh should have a proper pre-season for the first time in 3 years. The surgeries are all relatively minor and no real long-termers.

We are ideally placed and better off than we were entering 2023. No excuses.
