But multiple sources spoken to by foxfooty.com.au on Wednesday afternoon said the Saints were considering taking a player in the open draft then bidding on both Suns academy midfielder Leo Lombard and Bombers NGA forward Isaac Kako, before splitting their pick and sliding down the order slightly via a trade. The most likely suitor for the Saints’ second selection looks to be the Giants, who hold Picks 15, 16 and 21 in the first round. Richmond, too, had been floated as a possible suitor, but that looks unlikely.

Take 15 and 16 and trade out 21 if future first on offer from Roos or Eagles.

Other clubs offering future firsts need to sweeten it with pick in late 20s or early 30 to be inside Logan Smith bid.
I don't think that #21 gets a future first round pick from either of those clubs.

I suspect that clubs like Essendon and Gold Coast will come with F1s for our #15 or #16; Geelong or Gold Coast (because they have multiple F1s) could try to grab our #21. That's if we don't do a trade with Saints to split their #8 pick, which I think is still possible.

Alternatively, we could try a little trick along the Swans' lines with Bombers. Initially trade our F1 for their #28 & #31, which means they would be matching a Kako bid with their 40s picks. Then after the Kako bid - expected in the #10 onwards before our picks - trade them #16 & #37 for their F1. They get Kako and another first round pick; they still have Melbourne's F1 (or swap their pick for Demon's in the trade if they prefer) next year. Win-win.

Effectively, it is GWS: #16, F1, #37 for Essendon: F1, #28, #31.

We end up with #s 15, 21, 28, 31 this year plus Bombers/Demons' F1, less our F1.

It might look detrimental to some, but effectively we trade a late first round pick this year for a couple of mid second round picks in a draft that is pretty even (while removing the threat of a bid on Logan Smith taking out #37), while moving from (hopefully) a late first round pick to a mid (or even early) first round pick in 2025. Bombers punt on improving next year and making it a less-sweet deal, while we death-ride them & punt on them going backwards.

It would still likely get us guys like Whitlock/Hotton, Oliver/Hanniford, Clarke/Gross, O'Farrell/Mraz/Ough/Boxshall at those picks, plus Logan Smith.

A myriad of other potential deals starting to be whispered now ... it's going to be an interesting evening.

(Unfortunately, I'm working, so I'll miss the live fun, and have to catch up afterward.)

I would opine that we'll do that deal if we're eyeing off someone like Xavier Lindsay or Bo Allan who are pretty much guaranteed to not make it to #15. You'd think Hotton, Whitlock, Murphy are guys who could slide, and hence we shouldn't bite on a trade just to guarantee them ... but then again we moved one place to grab Leake when Saints were not interested in him, so it's possible. Toby Travaglia the other option we'd probably go for if Saints don't select him with their first.

Richmond have just thrown a spanner in the works.
I'm now officially off Taj.
Didn't expect those picks from Richmond.
Will be interesting to see if take a slider.
Murphy and Armstrong still in the board.
