JSOS is way overrated by many on here, if he had the effort of Ben he’d be stinking it in East Keilor FC like his brother.
Effort is his one wood, he needs to find some more consistent clubs in the bag.

I disagree with that sediment. He may not be as skilled as his father but what JSOS brings is more than just effort.
I have watched him pull the ball out of a pack and fire it by hand to a player on the outside to get us going forward or to score a goal. Not just once a game but several times any game.
Sure he is no Charlie or Harry but they are the main targets forward and the mids have looked for them more times than they should over the seasons. With better confidence from the Mids we should be seeing more scoring from our other forwards.

Max Holmes will have to be traded for, he turns 22yrs end of July, currently played 51 games 21 goals 190cm 85 games #20 2020 draft…

If he has a good year and for arguments sake he wishes to be traded, what’s he worth? can we manufacture a trade with current and future picks? and what would Geelong demand for a fair trade?

I’d say they rate him fairly highly and atm would probably want a pick around 10-15 especially on how strong this draft ends up being, he’s now in that sweet spot in games and preseason’s where he should be about to step his game up to another level…

If we go deep into September again, and we have the Campo twins who say have good/strong draft seasons then they are certainly our priority…

I’m a big Holmes fan and players of his type, i see Ainsworth a bit differently not sure we actually need him, keep playing and developing our own forwards…

Whose spot is he taking?

Martin is a better player imo but Jsos is more than serviceable as an AFL player. Not a superstar but he's far from the worst player on our list

Probably
Hewett Kennedy Cunners Fogarty
All whom i like and all bring different strengths to the team…

He can play forward midfield wing, he’s a versatile player with outstanding pace…

Can’t see him leaving the Cats at this stage anyway…
There was a lot of speculation on the Cats board and Pies that he wanted out last year after being left out of the grand final team. Apparently has a bit of an ego and his family want him to be a 'star' at a big Melbourne club. Pretty much seeking more recognition from what the rumour mill was saying, Pies board were convinced he wanted out

Okay, hadn’t heard anything thanks for the info WITG…

I've always thought Holmes was a little overated. Has some great traits but only averaged 19 touches a game last year as a 3rd year mid (I know he plays wing a bit). Solid but not particularly impressive.

Often with these top sides things get blurred and young + role players get overated because it's just assumed everyone are guns. Then once the actual stars retire / decline they cant step up and replace them.

Not saying this will be Holmes but he's definately not a player I would sell the farm for and the farm is what Geelong would want.

some people just struggle with the less than obvious....

Really think you have him wrong. Mcgovern and JSoS went head to head for third tall fwd with Mcgovern gifted preference early when he joined (JSoS young at same time). A few seasons later McGovern asks for a move to defence. JSoS form, durability and influence within the club won easily over the seesawing McGovern so McGovern revisited his situation and moved to take on Plowman's spot in defence as he would of assumed Marchbank makes it back (im sure he and his manager went thru the strategy/salary of this move).

Then Vossy also went to trial TDK as the third tall and dropped JSoS to see how that would go. JSoS saw off that challenge and went even further reinventing himself as a relief ruck. Found a way to add value when LOTS of others cant.

Then the supporters jumped all over JSoS early 2023 when none of the forwards got decent supply and he along with Fisher and Motlop were dumped when it was all supply related from defence to an out of form midfield. SEcond half JSoS comes back with fantastic form with much better supply. Proves himself and the club cant only but sign him back up again. Without that second half they would of incorrectly let him go. Again, he showed massive resilience not to be cast aside.

Mentally tough and smart. Committed. Everything our side needs.

And if you are a utility/third tall like Martin and JSoS you need decent supply. Everyone rates Martin off the back of late 2023 but in that Brissy final, his decent supply dried up even making him look completely ineffective as he was forced to pack fly with long high balls down the wing. JSoS gets caned in the bad games of bad supply. Martin doesnt. BTW, I rate both players highly.

Holmes is 21 and very talented but has yet to step up to the next level.

Around that age we have Ollie Hollands, Binns, E.Hollands, Wilson, Monahan who all have some similar characteristics or can play a similar role. That's on top of Cuningham, Cottrell, Fogarty, Durdin, Motlop, Fantasia, Martin & Acres. Not to mention the Camporeale boys at the end of the year.

I am all for bringing in quality but IMO Holmes doesn't bring anything we don't have already.

Let’s grow our own for a change - and trust in some player development- Billy Wilson come on down. :thumbsu:
Surely that is our immediate/medium term future. The salary cap is under control, but tight. A number of players will require upgraded contracts in the foreseeable future. We certainly shouldn’t turn our backs on “mature” possibilities to improve the list as a strict policy, but with the age demographic of our list, we are struggling to give opportunity to some existing members of the group.

The deals like we did with Acres & Hollands were great examples of what we should be doing. I reckon the Cerra deal was a good one as well even though he cost a lot more.

The ones I struggle with are Williams (even though I rate him)

I'm happy to overpay for players mid way through a rebuild, it's the only way to get good players in. It's also a good way of managing the salary cap. Paying young players a little extra as to meet your total player payments is how clubs run into salary cap issues in the future.

A lot of clubs fall over at that period at the end of their rebuild when they start to have success for this reason. We have seen it happen with our club during our last rebuild but also at other clubs as well. That period where you start having some success and start winning to the point where you become a genuine premiership contende can be the hardest part of the rebuild. Managing salaries prior to that is a big part of how well you succeed in this period.

Using salary dumps, overpaying some players who are going to be short term and overpaying some good players to get them in and front loading a lot of contracts, which are things we have done are good ways of managing player salaries.

I've said it before. A lot of clubs rebuilding struggle to manage their TPP. The very worst thing you can do is tack on a little extra to the salaries of guys like Weitering, Cripps, Curnow, DeKoning etc. Because the wont go down, will always want to go up from where they are at. Pay them 4% extra as kids in their second or third contract and you will be paying them 4% extra their whole careers.

Overpaying guys like McGovern and Williams then lowering their salaries is good list management. 1 we don't get them to our club without overpaying for them. 2 overpaying them is a far better way of meeting your TPPs than tacking extra salary onto your young long term players.

Williams and McGovern deals have copped a lot of criticism because they were paid more than their worth. Things don't work like that though. You have an entire list to manage. We had to over pay some senior players at the time, we were forced into that. The fact we didn't over pay our youth of the time was extremely good list management. It was just really fortunate for us that some were players who had talent and would be a part of our long term future.

I think we should be grateful that when we went out to find players to overpay, that some of them were players who had talent, that we actually wanted and fitted into our age bracket.

Our list management and salary management has been good. We avoided overpaying young hig talented players player during our rebuild and kept their salaries in check which this club has never done before. We were able to bring in developed and proven talent to a losing rebuilding club which didn't have a great deal of attraction. It's part of why our list is quality and we allegedly have cap space next season. We also aren't losing players due to salaries like some other clubs have done in recent times. We are in a great place list and salary wise. The club has managed thing really well.

Clearly once our list started to mature and the quality improved that the salary problem shifts from struggling to make minum total player payments to keeping things under the salary cap while still being able to bringing in talented develop players. Being more competitive, being able to offer players success and a good club to play at means we can no bring in players on closer to the salary they are worth.

Lets not forget where we have come from. Overpaying for mature players and using older players as salary dumps is a part of a good rebuild and good list management.

I think we are going to find we have managed the list and the salaries quite well. We continue to get our players signed up. We continue to bring in talent both mature and young. We continue to be able to bring in the players we want and need. We are doing things well, we aren't used to it because we haven't done it in 25 years or more but what we have been doing and what we are doing in my eyes is very very good.

Bailey Scott NM - has very strong finish to 2023
Tarryn Thomas NM - get his head right and he is a jet forward of centre - our greatest need.
Will Hayward - SYD
