I think all that is required to go another level next year is the following:

1. Kicking routine improvements for McKay and remaining on the park with Charlie
2. Elijah Hollands and a third (2023) joins for a future 2nd adds to our Jack Martin depth
3. Cuningham, Fogarty, Marchbank and Martin an injury free year with layers added to their fitness.
4. Injury free Cripps year. Trimming down once again to add speed.
5. Williams return to the backline
6. development for Cowan, Binns and Hollands.
7. Walsh with an injury free off season and a full preseason
I think 8. Work on ball movement / turnover game. Even though contested ball is our "1 wood" as everybody says, in my mind it has so much risk insofar as an injury to Crippa or the like can really reduce our competitive advantage. It feels too personnell dependent, whereas turnover strength feels more system based. When we started losing contested ball against Brisbane we fell apart.

At a guess:

Out: Dow, Fisher, Plowman, E. Curnow, Honey, O'Brien

In: E. Hollands, Pick 16, 40, 52, + 2 Rookies

Trade 1:

P.Dow and Pick 65 to St Kilda

Pick 51 to Carlton

Trade 2:

Z Fisher & Pick 51 to N. Melbourne

Picks 40 & 52 to Carlton

Trade 3:

Future 2nd to Gold Coast

E. Hollands to Carlton

Have a feeling we'll be trying to stockpile picks for the 2024 draft & trade period. We've got a couple of father-son prospects (Campo boys) we'll need capital for too.
Particularly with list spots at a premium this year and next.

I can see us taking 2 picks in the draft this year along with 2 trades/FA's, especially as we've already brought in the 2 Irish lads....and could see us doing something something similar in 2024 with the Campo twins and a couple of trades/FA's.

We also effectively brought in Cowan a year earlier as well, by trading our future 2nd last year to jag him.

Despite only losing by a couple kicks we played pretty average with our banged up players. A few umpiring decisions go our way. Free to McKay in the last. Down field to Curnow in the last and the double 50 to Walsh it would have made a difference. Not a lot to make up in the list management perspective. But we also need to improve our list so as to not stay still. We can’t go backwards in 2024.

I'd be inclined to take Cook at his word, draft 3 or 4, bring in 1 player (ie Hollands).
l believe that is the most likely direction, aside from Hollands there does not seem alot available of much interest in free agency etc, seems logical we will try to improve our draft hand which has been pretty clear from Cook & the team for several months.

Don't think this makes sense for us at all.
North are stacked with futures. 40 for Fish, who they've offered 5 years to is unders.
4 years at 450 with triggers.

With the new CBA it's a very middle of the road offer

I'd like to see us give Binns, Cowen and Elijah(if traded) plenty of opportunities, Williams walks into the side and Harry puts in some ruck training over the off season.(playing Pitto is akin to playing only 21.5 players)
But the big questions will be who makes way? We need more ball transition speed and run.

Think we need to move past them to help take that step up in 2024. They'll all have a role to play through the season mind you.

OK, found the quote:
Paddy Dow is St Kilda-bound. For Zac Fisher, he hasn’t told the Blues yet – their exit meetings are in the next couple of days – but thinking about it over the weekend, I expect him to join North Melbourne on a four-year deal with a five-year trigger at $450,000 a year.”

Good post. Wouldn't we just do Fisher for 40. Hardly worth the paper for North to trade 52 for 51 (or am I missing something ??)

Clubs often do the little ticky-tacky ones.

I think I was contemplating whether they would do 40 + 51 for Fish and 71 but didn't think it would fly.

Worth keeping in mind, that these picks are going to get pushed out by FA compo

You're neglecting that we're over-subscribed by 3 players on our list currently - i.e. need to delist/trade/retire 2 players (plus Ed C) before we do anything else. Or to look at it another way:

From your list:

Out: Dow, Fisher, Plowman, E. Curnow, Honey, O'Brien, Plus 3

In: O'Keeffe, Cincotta, Duffy, Monahan (Cat-B), E. Hollands, Pick 16, 40, 52, + 2 Rookies

If you can't find the "plus 3", then need to reduce the number of incoming players.

Would also mean paying out O'Brien, as he is contracted for next year. Possible, but unlikely (I don't think anyone will offer a trade for him).

As for your trade scenarios, 1 and 2 aren't great trades for us - would want both to be better. Scenario 3 is about right. Can't see how Hollands is worth more than either Dow or Fisher.

Shaun Mannagh 27 disposals 6 goals mature age player good age bracket.
We lose Dow will offer good depth and also kick 40 goals for the year playing mid/forward. So could settle up forward as well.
Gettable Cal T said today Hollands to Carlton for a future 2nd should get it done. Will be an absolute steal if true!

I can see us paying out Lochie.

I think people are being very optimistic about what two fringe players will get us.

Dow and Fisher are both in demand because they are seen as gettable and affordable, not because they're likely to make a huge impact at another club.

You need to manage your expectations about what we will be getting back

Brodie McLaughlin might be worth looking at. Can play that taller forward, back up ruck role. Kicked a lot of goals at VFL this year. 25 and ready to go

I expect TDK to really come on next year and for us to play just ONE proper ruckman

I still don’t understand why we re signed Pitto for 4.

Does Mannagh have some Gibbons vibes?
