Quality small forwards are part of the leg speed and disposal efficiency you speak of. Gryan Miers and Brad Close are as involved as any player the Cats have at linking the play and delivering inside 50. They get up the ground and sprint back all day long and are frequently in their teams top runners. The same goes for many others: Bedford, Daniels, Greene... Elliot, McCreery, Hill, Schultz. Bailey, Cameron, McCarthy, Rayner.

I posted earlier this season the difference in Goal Assists from our team vs other contenders and the difference was stark. Nearly all of them had a range of small forwards in their top half dozen while we had none. It was Curnow and our mids and Owies way down the line.

Miers alone had more goal assists last year than some of our smalls have had over their entire careers.

We need to upgrade ours it's such an anchor to our game forward of centre to carry 3-4 very limited players.
To be honest, as much as I've liked overall what Austin and his crew have achieved over the past few years, there's been a few head scratchers along the way.

I know that Vossy wanted more run when he took over the gig, but I'm not sure why we picked both Ollie and Binns back in 2022, when we've got the Campo's coming in who play a similar role. Getting Acres was a massive tick, but I'm not sure what role/position the others will have in the future.

Billy was an interesting pick - we brought him in apparently as a mid, but are now playing him at half back - so I'm not sure what we've actually got. M.Carroll a half back as well, similar to Cowan, and we have Duffy arriving soon who is also best suited to half back. Seems like we've got wingers and half backs coming out of our clackers, but a lack of developing talls. We have Lemmey who was originally brought in as a forward, but we're not sure where to play him now.

I was screaming in last year's draft to take Sanchez, cos I saw him as that creative half forward who hits the scoreboard - similar to a Ginnivan. We could have taken him or Callinan in the rookie draft, but opted for another mid sized half back instead.

I'm hoping like **** we bring in a smaller/mid creative forward and a tall in the MSD if we use both picks.

Today's performance confirmed to me need to be targeting Bailey Smith. A player who can break the lines with pace. Would complement our midfield. Not sure if we have the capital or $ to get it done.

We miss Doc badly. Ollie losing a bit of form on the wing, Doc steps in and takes over. We have a few injuries in defence, Doc slots straight in. Our midfield getting beaten by the oppo, Doc steps in to give it more grunt.

Never shirks a challenge, and always plays his role. Hopefully he chooses to stay on after his rehab, but you could understand if he decides to call it a day.

Yep. Obvious yesterday

Another season another injury list that includes Martin, McGovern, Marchbank and Cunners. Particularly with Doc's ongoing injury issues. Can't carry a significant percentage of your list which can't manage 23 games combined most season.

IMO we need some tough decisions at years end.

With Cripps Curnow McKay Weitering Saad Newman Acres etc the time is NOW

A number of injury prone players need to go. These days you just can’t carry them

We will bring in Campo twins so that’s more youth. We then need to add mature KPD and some more run with focus on ball use.

Definitely some interesting calls to be made at the end of the year. I'd be surprised if 3 of the 4 I've mentioned are not delisted or rookied.

Last type we need - can he play, no doubt. But lacks the elite disposal chops most of our runners are missing also.

I scratch my head looking back in hindsight, Miers was huge in his draft year, kicked goals for fun and had heaps of the ball, yet slid very low, he is a quality player.

The time should have been at least NOW but it isn't, it's arguably in two seasons. That's the problem.

We've been moping about with 'fringe' types for a while now, thinking the players you mentioned would get us across the line. Getting in players that will make up the difference is not going to be cheap or easy. People are already bringing up the name of some individual 'name' player who is supposed to make up all the difference but won't. He'll just be absorbed into the flux of a changing and aging list. We should have looked at trading out the likes of Martin seasons ago.

It's been noodling about with some theme or other each year (in the draft and otherwise), while ignoring others, that has left us unprepared for it to be NOW.

To put things into perspective of just how diabolical our small forwards are... Nic Newman has 4 more goal assists than Matt Owies, Matt Cottrell, Corey Durdin and David Cuningham this season... COMBINED.

Kicking to 2 of the in form KPF's in the comp, there is simply no excuse for being that poor.

Cerra is our only mid that lowers the eyes and has the skills to pass lace out to a leading forward.

Cripps lowers the eyes too but not the best kick.

Walsh Kennedy Jewett all bomb long types.

We need an explosive mid with composure and good foot skills and has decent footy IQ.

Where can we find one of these?? Open the wallet and get one in. No other way.

Good find.

Is it because our smalls know no other way or our coaches instructions?

No to Lobb.

We need to find a taller second tall defender, and one more mid who can hold his own with an elite kick.

I think the smaller fwd is simply a by product of fixing the midfield.
I agree about the small forwards to a large extent but there's no such thing as 'fixing' anything, just getting in the required mix of talent at the right time.

It's because they are below standard small forwards.

Compare ours to any of the top forward lines in the competition and the difference is clear.
'Theme of the year' recruiting just gives birth to itself season after season.
I've been rambling on about our woeful small forwards for years now. Martin is our best by a country mile and is permanently injured, the rest are role players at best and lack the traits to be consistent star players.

The quality of our smalls might not be as good as some others at afl level but I still think part of the problem is how we attack.

If we stopped the ‘must always go to Charlie or H’ thinking the smalls may learn to lead into space.

This then has the sdvantage of defenders needing to play closer and hence free up defenders ganging up on Charlie and H.

Look at cats f50 entries…👌👌

Lachie Young taking on the traffic to go wide and slow down the play.

Why?

Better. Small. Forwards.

Agreed and medium forwards too given SOS is out for the year, Martin too often injured and Moir still at least 12 months being able to make a meaningful impact. I think the club has essentially acknowledged it with the news we are chasing Will Hayward. Hopefully we are also looking to take a small and/or medium forward in the upcoming mid season draft too. I’m not sure why it wasn’t a priority in the off season trade period.

Maybe the club thought after last year they Motlop would continue his improvement and a couple of Martin, Cunners, Durdin and Owies to step up in contract years. Unfortunately injuries to all of those players may have ruined hope of that happening. Durdin has to stay fit and pay well or he could be delisted. Martin and Cunners are too injury prone to be relied on, nor Owies who isn’t good enough IMO.

It may have been said before, but is MacMahon from our VFL side worth a crack in the MSD? Wouldn’t get a game in a full strength senior team, but looks like he’d be a handy backup.
