Like Keays, Dev needs to find a club that would give him an oportunity and persist with him in the midfield.
We are not the club for him. Way too many ahead of him and more are coming.
Is there a club out there that would take him?
I think Collingwood would suit him, maybe Adelaide if they lose Berry. Otherwise he will unfortunately remain a VFL player.
I think the big drawback with Dev is his lack of class with his ball use, particularly his kicking. I believe this was the knock on him as a junior and was the reason he dropped so far down in the draft. He is a great ball hunter and tackler but in modern football if you turn the ball over consistently you can’t expect to play at the highest level. And to try to modify his kicking style now would be incredibly difficult.

We have a logjam at midfield with no injuries and players like Berry, Bailey, Rayner and Ashcroft who are all better midfielders in the first team anyway.

With Levi and Marshall on their way !

It took a very fortunate set of circumstances for Keays to end up with an AFL career. A struggling side with injuries to similar footballers allowing him time to develop at the elite level with a lack of young talent to push him out

Nathan you and others go out of your way to knock Ben every chance you get. You've all been doing it for years.

There was no set of 'fortunate circumstances' that ended up in an AFL career.

He runs his guts out both ways ,he's going to be a 200 game player and most clubs would love to have him.

End of story.

Disagree

Could’ve not been rookied and ended up playing VFL. Or rookied by a strong team and never got a chance. Or Crows might’ve had a decent run with injuries and he doesn’t get an extended run in the seniors

Well that rookie career path could've happened to anyone to be honest. Keays was included at a rebuilding phase for a club knowing what they'll get. His relentless work ethic got him the well deserving career he currently has.

I've kept my eye out for game day threads in the last 2-3 years for Adelaide and Keays will get consistent praise for his work ethic and never stop trying attitude. He had to adapt along the way too, got moved out of center handing over the midfield keys to someone else. But he went forward and found another way to contribute and produce the goods. Well done to him.

Are you saying we shouldn’t have let Ben keays go? Because I agree.

I think overall letting him go was justifiable but in hindsight I would've loved to have had him in the team in last year's GF.

Whatever ,they absolutely love him in Adelaide. We had plenty of other options who looked better on whatever biometric is used to plot the future but he's just one of those guys who's made the absolute best out of himself and is therefore often able to give you more than what you would've expected.

I still do t see him in our team right now.

Would've become our Jarryd Lyons if he stayed on and got the midfield role. It's sliding doors, if Keays was retained and he flourished, maybe we would not have gone for Lyons ? - hard to say.

He has been pushed out of Adelaide’s midfield

Yep, same as what we did with Lyons this year. Lyons and Keays were at Lions in 2019 season. Lyons walked in and got paired with Neale which started our swing up the ladder. We never know what the outcome would've been if Keays got that role and allowed to grow.

Also after being pushed out of midfield, Keays has found a home as small forward kicking 28 goals so far this season. Decent return for an average battler.

But to get to the point whether he's really good ,average or never been much good I'm just aggravated by people who want to knock him every chance they get.

A couple of years ago it was every Adelaide game, in they come again picking up every time he missed a target or a shot.

The issue is that they're really annoyed anyone could think he's a good player. Which he is.

I am just saying that I don’t see a place for him in our team.

Interesting given it was probably a reaction to every time he kicked a goal someone probably calling Fages an idiot for letting him go

Most have been well balanced that he needed a long run of games at senior level to take the next step which he wasn't going to get here

But keep your moral crusade up. I'm sure you're winning hearts and minds

Well he's been gone for 4 years Dalions so it's pointless but if he were available now absolutely I would have him in the team.

But we brought Prior in who everyone thought was finished and he was able to play a role so apart from say 7 or 8 key players he'd just be one of many who could do a job

You're just making that up. That's completely untrue.

The knockers far outweighed anyone who supported him.

All I kept saying was that he was a good player and the usual suspects kept piling in trying to make an argument out of whether we should have let him go or not.

I'm glad we let him go because he was never going to get anywhere with us.

This is why it’s pointless bringing it up all of the time.
I think you'll find I wasn't the one who brought it up. The second time the word Keays has come out of my mouth for over a year.

But others seem to want to will him to be not much good like an itch they cant get rid of.

Ben's actually a descendant of a couple of Fitzroy greats from nearly a century ago so I've always had a soft spot for him.

Not on what I saw 2 weeks ago. He was everywhere. That was a game where he won it virtually on his own.

But clearly playing above himself. He's done that a few times.

Barely used him around the ball yesterday despite very clearly needing some contested strength in there. Bad coaching imo.

Interesting to compare the situation between Lohmann and Robertson at the start of the year. Different players but arguments could be made for each to take up a defensive small forward role. Robertson was probably in front of Lohmann as he played in the grand final. Both recovering from injuries. Lohmann selected in front of Robertson as his recovery was furthe advanced. Posters questioned Lomann’s selection even as sub during the first three or four rounds.

Now Lohmann is one of the keys to our forward set up and Robertson should be traded (according to some/many). Players’ careers can be determined by many random factors.

Sliding doors…. Love what Keays has achieved at the Crows through hard work and determination….. Had he played defensive small forward for the
Lions it last years grand final no one knows what the result would have been.
