Do we need to go down the mature bodied acquisition path while Voss is at the helm? Thereā€™s enough evidence to suggest draftees wonā€™t be getting games (other than Cowan and Ollie). Spending our primo picks on the Houston types is probably more beneficial than what we see with your Binns types.

Another year wasted.

Cooke - find better assistants that know how to coach each third.

Austin - find the missing pieces and no more wasting resources and money on Ireland.

Some kids out of place, but we need to start getting the ball to the outside.

FB: Newman - Young - Weitering
HB: ??? - McGovern- Saad
C: Acres - Cripps - Binns
F: TDK - Lord - O.Hollands
HF: ??? - McKay - ???
FF
: ??? - Curnow - Kemp/Moir

B: Walsh - Hewett/Kennedy - Cowan -

Get fitter/ hungrier: E.Hollands, Cerra

Rest: Get better or move on

Use whatever we have outside the main squad to find some missing pieces below.

HB: Houston (trade)
HF: Konstanty, Garcia, Wicks (Trade) Berry (Draft)
FF: Rosas (Trade)

KPD: Oā€™Farell (Draft)
Mid: Oā€™Driscoll (Trade)

Hopefully thereā€™s a silver lining to take away from tonights game.

Yeah we could have been close all game and then lost and the club would think we are super close. But that first half was disgraceful and if the LM team canā€™t see that we have a sub par midfield and and even more worrying forward line, then I donā€™t know what will.

Our list is a shambles. I don't rate Nick Austin but if the club is serious we need to make 15 changes. We are better off taking some punts with vfl and high dry picks than continue with status quo
We aren't going to be making 15 changes. Most clubs take four players in the draft max - how are you replacing the other 11...?

Motlop, Durdin, Orazio, Owies

Name me 4 worse small forwards in the competition.

Not the only issues we had out there tonight and Owies was suspended but dear god every teams half forwards put us to the sword time and time again while ours weave daisy chains and trip over their own arses
Motlop, Durdin and Fantasia in particular, would probably be the worst 3 comp in the finals series. We wouldn't have a single player in the top 15 smalls in the finals. Hawks rolling with 5 better than any of ours.

So much of modern footy is smalls who can roll up, pressure and help in transition. Fog does it well. Owies at least is smart enough to sneak a goal or two. The rest are dreadful.

So at the start of the 2025 season or just after, the top of our age profile looks like this:

32 Newman
31 Docherty
30 Saad
30 Williams
30 Cripps
29 Acres
29 Fantasia
29 Hewett
28 Pittonet
28 Curnow
27 Owies
27 Kennedy
27 Weitering
27 Silvagni
27 McKay

This doesn't include likely delistings and trades.

We have a major decision to make. Are we having a proper go at a flag next year, or are going to do a mini rebuild before Tassie comes in, and accept that many of these players won't be at their peak, or still playing when we are ready again?

If we are going to make a charge, major changes need to happen, and hopefully some players are frustrated enough to look elsewhere and give us some draft currency. This group will not get it done without a major injection of talent.

Whatever we decide, we have to trade. We can not trust this team with this game plan. Something has to give.

As per usual, most people in here think you can secure trades for chump change.

The Curnow McKay tandem needs to be broken up. Itā€™s clear in the current era two key forwards arenā€™t required to win a premiership; and playing it safe is guaranteed to repeat mistakes of the past.

Every team currently in finals has at least two key forwards (Swans - McDonald/Amartey/McLean, Giants - Hogan/Cadman, Cats - Cameron/Neale/Henry, Lions - Daniher/Hipwood/Morris, Port - Dixon/Georgiades and Hawks - Chol/Dear)

Good post, yes disturbing. Iā€™d suggest thereā€™s not much juice left in this grouping.

Urgent intervention is required and trading named players is the way to go. Fans are way too attached to players like Curnow; time to trade him out.

Itā€™s a full rebuild not a mini version. Hit the draft, forget Rosas and co - how many mediocre recruits do we require from other clubs?

Unfortunately whilst Voss is coaching we are buggered.

Curnow 57.
McKay 49.

Our two big forwards are not the problem.

Yes let's trade Curnow... Our biggest match winner and arguably our best player when fully fit... That will fix the issues!

Our issues remain on the heads of our role players, not our stars. TDK, Cripps, Charlie, Harry, Weiters etc shouldn't have to carry the team on their back week after week because the role players can barely tie their own shoe laces half the time.

look how much theyā€™re earning in comparison. McKay and Curnow are on hefty contracts - are you suggesting any of these combos are earning in the same vicinity?

A more even list is required; Carlton has been overpaying supposed a graders for far too long.

Supposed A graders who all took paycuts to bring in more quality players? Interesting

Better players do get paid more - but I would think Hogan/Cadman will end up being on similar amounts. Daniher/Hipwood probably on decent coin as well

The Swans trio aren't world beaters though. That's saying they play 2 key forwards, not that they play two gun key forwards. Neale is not elite. Hipwood is average. Dixon is done. Chol is a stop gap. We just need to replace one of ours with someone who costs less, just for structure. I'd use TDK and O'Keeffe rotating between forward and ruck. What these teams do have though is quality small forwards to take advantage of the ground balls. The days of key forwards being used just to take pack marks and kick goals has gone. They are expected to do far more work up the ground, and bring teammates into the game. Ours don't do this nearly enough.

TDK was clearly limping off after the game.

Clearly not 100% and wanted to manage him. Probably shouldnā€™t have played but it was a final.

He had heart though, and he added momentum and ball movement immediately.

I guess this is where we disagree - I think McKay and Curnow do an extraordinary amount of work outside of just kicking goals. McKay is the best up-the-ground forward in the comp outside of Jeremy Cameron whilst Curnow is one of the best field kicks in the comp.
