Motlop, Durdin, Orazio, Owies

Name me 4 worse small forwards in the competition.

Not the only issues we had out there tonight and Owies was suspended but dear god every teams half forwards put us to the sword time and time again while ours weave daisy chains and trip over their own arses
There are worse around, but as a collective, it is impossible to argue.

For the last three seasons I have been saying we need to rebuild our midfield. Nothing has changed in there. We have added no players who have pace and agility who tackle well and carry the footy.

It's like we are in denial about the game changing since the new rules. There have been a number of sides who have embraced the change, Collingwood were the first. Now there are a heap more who have rocketed past us.

We still have a big heavy slow and immobile midfield and carry the old fashioned game style that comes with it. We are obsolete in our structure and our game style.

We got absolutely torched for pace in the first half of this game and I hope this is massively stamped on the foreheads of the coaching group and the list management group.

We have a boatload of slow midfielders. We need to be trying to trade some of them off the list to bring in what we need in there. Kennedy, Cripps, Hewett and Cerra don't have any agility, pace or an outside game. So start trading!

Our defence isn't quick enough. Saad is but the rebound from the others is not that flash. We are ok but nothing great.

Our forward line is a rabble. There are no players there who are genuine forwards. That's why or forwards are always out of position and we bomb because we aren't setup. Out small and medium forwards aren't good enough at ground level or overhead. Our forwards line is full of failed midfielders and half forwards and that doesn't work. Forward craft is a unique skillsets and that hasn't been identified at Carlton well enough.

We need to trade aggressively. Offload the slow midfielders and do what we can to bring in some pace and agility in there or we are going to be a team of witches hats for every sides who has embraced the modern game and added pace and agility to their onball group.

We need to bring in some genuine forwards. Half forward flank is a specialist position. We don't have any specialist half forwards on the list apart from maybe Moir and Martin.

We need to be lucky and aggressive at the trade table. Clean out the slow and bring in some quick mobile players. Embrace the modern game.

I would include Lord as one of the midfield main stayers starting next year.

Cripps and Lord make a good combination.

Lord loves getting his hands dirty with the ground balls in dispute....which frees up Cripps to more damage moving the ball away from the heat

Get another pacey power type mid with good kicking skills on the outside.

Would trade out Kennedy and Carroll while they still have currency. Yeah love Matty K as much as anyone. They arenā€™t what we need in our midfield. Lord, Wilson ready to step up for them next year. We could get those quicker mids we need with astute trading.

Trouble is neither has much currency

Well known psychological phenomenon to over value what you have/own vs what itā€™s truly worth
Kennedy worth less than Carroll probably given age and Carroll wouldnā€™t be worth much to start with..

Desperately slow through middle of ground - it is frustrating we have continually not addressed this issue.
Voss preaches pressure and contest.
We have the players for the contest part, but not the right players/mix to implement the pressure part!
Thatā€™s what needs to be addressed this off season imo

Smith/pickett/ryan/wicks/rosas/konstanty/garcia

There the names Iā€™d be going at

Our key issues:

  • Lack of pace in defence, Saad the only one who combines pace with skill. Solution Williams moves back to defence.
  • Lack of pace through midfield, have to look at replacing one of Kennedy, Cerra or Hewitt, with someone with pace.
  • Small and medium forwards are just horrible. Even if they kick goals as high half-forwards they don't win enough possessions
  • collective issue is we are too slow, as such despite some individual defensive talent we are an inferior defensive side.

This has been the case for the entire 3 year period under Voss. Outside a freakish run of games where we won almost every close game the team has looked a 7 to 12 side, which isn't acceptable given the headline talent it has.

Time and time again, teams pop up out of the blue, almost always they are loaded with speed. Modern football, speed, skill pressure.
Our only running defender we have is Saad. And he's usually tasked with playing on the opposition's best small forward. Been a massive issue for a long time.

I would seriously look at trading in Bailey Smith. A midfield or Cripps, Walsh & Smith is much better balanced with TDK in the ruck.
Future first with a second rounder coming back should be enough to get the deal done.

We desperately need more speed in our midfield

Agree. However, as Iā€™ve said before we do have options internally if we are smart

Cripps is a Star
Hewett or Kennedy are our grunt
Cerra if fit is a gun
Walsh the same
Elijah has class if he gets fitter

Then we have
Lord who looks very composed and has quick hands
Wilson has real run
Kemp should be tried in the middle
Cincotta Cowan are possibles

Add one or two more quick players and itā€™s a very good midfield

That assumes, our recruiters have the ability to pick gems with little draft capital....

I'm not seeing it. And anyhow, without a gameplan thats better than bomb it down the line then bomb it i50, whats it matter

Thereā€™s plenty of draft capital to work with, just hope the LM team is up to it.

Lord looks solid but again similar to our other mids big bodied not overly quick.
Voss & recruitment team are going to have to change in this area, otherwise we are stuck in middle group of teams.

Lord isnā€™t slow and is very quick with hands and feet because he is clean. Will make a difference

As an outsider Matthew Kennedy to North would make a lot of sense. They are still light on quality mids so a big body would help.

Why would we get anything back?

I would not be opposed to that, heā€™s the type of mid we need, but I was told a while back that heā€™d recently bought a house in the Geelong region, so I think it will be a forgone conclusion where heā€™ll end up.

Wilson has run, but as a lighter body is he likely to get a game? Weā€™ve seen the hesitance with Binns, Wilson will probably get a similar amount of opportunity in the ones.

Okay, after sleeping on it, here's where I'm at:

Binns showed he can handle it. Wilson can as well. Lighter bodies is BS. The question is will Voss trust them
