Does 'equal' also include the AFLW competition being funded by the revenue generated by the AFLW competition, or does the money to support a 17 plus round season and 'livable wages' for all players come from elsewhere?
Cripps and Daicos being paid the same as the bum taken at 26 in the rookie draft and the journeyman ruck with less than 50 games in 10 years would be 'equal' too yet nobody ever pines for that.

Professional sport is in the entertainment business and entertainers get paid by demand, the big names make disgusting amounts of money and those who aren't in demand get paid like shit.

Male AFL players are all paid extremely well and guaranteed six figures yet the total AFL salary for the nearly 800 listed players wouldn't even come close to covering the wages of the ten highest paid NBA players.

Yeah, not sure what your point is?

I'm just trying to understand what another poster deemed as 'equal', when he was wanting the AFLW players to be 'equal' asap.

It comes from the governing body of the sport, the AFL, which can use it's money however they like to grow their sport.
AFL and AFLW are not run by separate entities so of course revenue from either can support the other competition any way that the AFL likes.

Your argument is such a bullshit argument when basically all businesses have a product that is their primary revenue stream with others may provide less revenue, they still use money from overall revenue to aid with the product that provides less revenue.

What is my 'argument'?

I was merely asking a question.

The crying about a trophy that really does not matter is really weird. Happy for the players to get some extra $ but that is about it.

Is it a perfect trophy? No

Is just about everything the AFL touched flawed? Absolutely.

Enjoy the McLelland Trophy, I'm happy with the premierships
Premiership*. Singular.

Of course, any fan would rather the Premiership, but failing that, you have to be pretty chuffed picking up a million dollarydoos!

Amusing thing is, Hawks fans are content with Lions winning the Premiership, they fully deserved it. Yet Lions fans are salty as **** we won this. Stay classy guys.

Do you forget that this (extremely flawed) award recognises both AFL and AFLW competitions?

What business has a product that runs at a $50 million loss each year, that the company keeps investing more in, to make even greater losses each year on?

Hawthorn need the money more than Brisbane with Tassie going away so glad they won it. Keeps the tin rattling at bay for a few more months.
Reality must be a real bitch of a thing.

The Brisbane Lions have been the third-highest recipient of variable funding since 2012 (when GWS entered the competition), ahead of St Kilda, which was clearly the most heavily funded Victorian club for the 11 years until 2023, when they were overtaken on the funding ladder by North Melbourne.

Collingwood, Hawthorn, West Coast and Geelong received at least $100 million less than expansion teams GWS and Gold Coast over the decade from 2012 to 2021, while the Saints received $17 million more than the next Victorian club, the Western Bulldogs, over those 10 years. But the Saints have had a reduction in variable funding since 2022, having wiped off most of a massive debt that was incurred in the years after their disastrous move to Seaford and then return to Moorabbin, which required major funding.

Collingwood, West Coast, Richmond and Hawthorn have been the same four clubs to receive zero in variable funding for several years, while expansion teams Greater Western Sydney and Gold Coast receive easily the largest share of additional funding, with a total each of more than $25 million, including the base funds, in 2023.

The Lions still have the highest debt in the competition, close to $10 million, a large share of that is owed to the AFL. Their debt peaked at $18 million in 2018 and they and the league have made debt reduction their priority, maintaining a high funding level despite on-field success under Chris Fagan.

What business would be providing a product for almost a decade if they thought the return on investment was shit?

The growth of the women's game has been crazy and the thing is all of this growth isn't going to be directly tied to AFLW revenue.
More women are watching the sport and participating in the sport which would not reflect purely an AFLW revenue stream but an AFL revenue stream as a whole.

Why do people like you think the AFL would continue running the competition if there was not a net positive for the AFL overall because there clearly is.

Oh don't get me wrong, I like the aflw as a concept, but the afl stuffed it by trying to overcook it by going to 18 teams and paying the players too high for what they were currently putting out.

A much better model was a slow build, adding 2 new teams every 3 to 5 years. It would mean the standard is higher and and more watchable, the losses would be about half and that money could go back into development and better coaching. This all came about by the afl attitude of trying to be 'woke' and they killed their own product in doing so. It will be very hard to win back those potential customers turned off permanently by the 18 team competition, being such a poor quality product.

Refer to above reply to someone who posted the same thing SYB.

The club chairman recently said the net debt will be down to $4m at the end of this year.

Yeah, I see your “we have lots of debt because we choose to” argument.

It’s very funny.

Even you would be able to read our annual reports and understand this is correct SYB. If you’re struggling let me know.

Our President has gone through it and said it publicly as well.

Again, say it slowly with me - owed to the AFL.

Really? I honestly couldn't care less now that we won the flag. Congrats.
