Any chance Blight makes it through to our second pick? With Noah Long confirmed to have not done his ACL, WC don't have a pick. If Richmond select one of Scaife/Howes and Hawthorn select Hutchinson, the only teams I could see picking him up on a needs basis would be Collingwood or Essendon. Fremantle might be interested as he plays for Peel but they seem covered for their defence

Look, I wouldn't have thought so because I don't think there will be many players selected but in saying that there is always a surprise so you never know.

Hawks would love either Scaife or Howes in this mid-season draft, they won't be getting a mid because they will probably be a chance in the National draft to grab Sid Draper or even inside bull Sam Lalor if he keeps improving at a rate of knots

Wouldn’t risk it

Take Blight pick 1

I like Hutchinson also

I suspect we'll look at a six month ruck with one of our picks (or longer if we part ways with Free at the end of the year).

It's easy to forget the MSD is ideally for covering major injuries. We're already robbing ourselves having Larkey as back up ruck, if Xerri gets injured we are either going to have to play Goad two years too early or Free and neither option is great.

For all the grief Coleman-Jones gets his type was clearly integral to our game plan and it's no coincidence that run and gun play that looked good in the pre-season and our early games has suffered since CCJ went down.
If we are looking for a ruck, a couple options could be Joe Pike, Will Elliot or Brynn Teakle.

YOUNG GUNS PUSH THEIR CASE

A host of AFL mid-season draft prospects made the most of another chance to impress recruiters in the second Young Guns game last Sunday.

The Young Guns scored a thumping 69-point win over Vic Country at Craigieburn, with some of the forwards proving standouts.

Essendon VFL forward Oskar Smartt spent significant time through the midfield and was the leading disposal winner on the ground for the Young Guns with 22 touches, along with six marks, five clearances and two goals.

The performance came after the 180cm Smartt — who was overlooked in last year’s draft — had booted three goals in the first Young Guns game against Vic Metro.

Eastern Ranges product Remy MacLean also did his draft prospects no harm as the athletic 196cm key forward finished with 4.2 from 12 disposals and six marks.

Geelong Falcons ruckman Joe Pike kicked three goals from 10 disposals, while also having 20 hitouts sharing ruck duties with Iliro Smit.

Pike’s Geelong Falcons teammate Liam Kershaw and former Falcons graduate Tobyn Murray were among other Young Guns to draw praise for their performances.

WA FORWARD ON MID-SEASON RADAR

Clubs are keeping a close eye on West Australian key forward Jasper Scaife, who has quickly emerged as a mid-season draft prospect.

The 197cm West Perth product was this week named in a 34-man WAFL State squad ahead of their clash with South Australia at Optus Stadium on May 19.

That match looms as a final audition ahead of the mid-season draft on May 29.

Scaife, 20, if a former Fremantle Next Generation Academy member who was overlooked in his draft year in 2022.

He kicked 22 goals from 16 WAFL Reserves games last year, before cracking a senior WAFL debut in round 1 this season.

Scaife has gone on to average 11.8 disposals, 6.5 marks (1.8 contested) and has kicked eight goals from his first four senior WAFL matches to catch the attention of scouts.

Former Port Adelaide ruckman Brynn Teakle, who was a train-on player with Collingwood over pre-season, has also been included in the WAFL State squad after a strong start to the season with East Fremantle.

Teakle is also eligible to be selected in the mid-season draft.

OVERLOOKED PAIR IN CONTENTION

TASMANIAN Geordie Payne and West Australian key defender Jacob Blight are among the prospects being scouted with early picks in the upcoming mid-season draft.

Vacant list spots have ballooned to 22 with Brisbane now having four open positions after the season-ending knee injuries to Darcy Gardiner and Lincoln McCarthy, however there is expected to be around half of those taken.

Payne was overlooked last year despite having interest from clubs, including Collingwood, but is back on the radar as a mid-season hopeful given his strong first half of this season as a quick defender with Tasmania and the Young Guns.

Blight is a 22-year-old key defender from Peel who has attracted interest from several clubs looking to bolster their backline stocks. VFL defender Mutaz El Nour, who has been overlooked at previous mid-season intakes, remains in contention for a mid-season spot, while key forwards Noah Howes and Jasper Scaife are considered strong possibilities.

A number of formerly listed AFL players are also putting themselves in the mix.

Trey Ruscoe, Liam McMahon and Trent Bianco (ex-Collingwood), Jack Peris, Dan McKenzie and Tom Highmore (ex-St Kilda), Lachie Young (ex-North Melbourne) and Jez McLennan (Gold Coast) are in the group looking for a return to the top level.

The mid-season rookie draft will be staged in three weeks on Wednesday, May 29. – Callum Twomey
If a team who are looking to make finals this year is after these kids, surely we should be too?

I'd be really keen on Jez McLennan with our 2nd pick. He is a beautiful kick of the footy and never had any continuity at the GC. I'd play him across half back and release Sheezel into the midfield.

feels like we'll get his type again in the national draft.
Mid season is the perfect time to get a mature aged key position or small forward who can have an immediate impact.

Blight and teakle or howes and a kpd would be my favourite option. Some ready to go talls would be ideal I reckon

I'd say we are paying $1.01 to get a tall with our first pick. Could look to fill other roles with our 2nd depending on who is available.

I really don't want Teakle, he is pretty soft and has had opportunities at AFL level before. Really don't see what he offers other than a bit of depth. Already have Free there for mature ruck depth.

If we take a second pick they almost certainly flop.
Second round in the midseason draft is a wasteland.
I'm not too fazed who we take. I like howes with our first as he's so young he has more scope for improvement.
Blight is similar but I feel while our kpds look dire right now they improve drastically when Logue and Dawson return.
That sort of leaves kpf as the biggest hole on the list. Getting a forward ruck would be a decent move.

I recognise he's a spud but a Levi Casboult who can kick would be great for us.
A bit of a marking threat and a decent chop out in the ruck . It would stop the double teaming of Larkey day 1.
