I really do feel a 2 year contract on solid money is the best way forward for both parties. It gives him some certainty to attack his rehab with peace of mind and then improve his contract status heading in FA in a couple of years.

We've been fortunate recently to have all of our midfielders available for the major of recent seasons but just takes one injury (which shouldn't be out of picture given we a few older players) and suddenly we need that extra midfielder anyway.

Other teams will still be offering 5 year deals. If he really does want out, this just compounds it unfortunately in terms of having a fresh start.

Not great for either the club or Smith really. Aside from missing a year, his prospects of a big deal are limited if he goes and the club’s prospects of big compensation are limited.

That’s the danger in holding out for a big deal.
