Training 2024 Pre-Season

Great training reports from those who posted........well done.

Just a few things to add.

These days, not much shocks me........but I have to say that I was a little shocked at how gruelling today's session was........the players worked their absolute butts off.

And in very warm conditions.

As one poster commented on....the temp difference for perceived versus actual temp was bizarre.....my phone said 25C and it felt like 35C......every now and then you'd get a breeze off the bay that lasted for a magnificent 20 seconds.

Three times I thought "that will do for the players today" and off they'd go for more 400 m runs....as I said....,it was gruelling.

As saintmike65 mentioned.....some of Bonner's work was great....twice his passes were sublime and Darcy Wilson's running was a real eye opener...........but we already knew he's a gifted runner.

Watching his sprint away from his group in front of the DFC was a sight to behold.

And how good is it that a player of Sinc's calibre barely rates a mention.

All the talk is about other players and what they can/may do.....he's like the "forgotten man"

A great sign IMO.

I'm calling Windy and Mitch the "Terminators"

They are machines...!!!!!!!!!
Great insight as always there Watto

Loving the training reports thanks people, it makes for some great reading!

Its easy to get ahead of ourselves at this time of year, but finally its starting to look like we have our injury management and player work loads sorted. We have a cluster of kids coming through from the past few years drafts that Im confident will lift the club to levels we havent seen since 2009-2011.

The future is looking bright Go Sainters!

maybe its because i haven't started an injury thread ?

Tha

t's my greatest fear too Diehard.

He's been out for essentially 1 and 3/4 seasons.....that's a long long time in the footy world.

He looked in great nic today but naturally,we don't know how his body is holding out.

I really hope I'm wrong but I fear he's heading down the Dmac path.
It’s not my greatest fear because, thankfully, harsh as it may sound, we now Have a squad with more options than when he came.

obviously it’s sad for him and it’s still good to have depth though.

Yep, it sucks for him and it's a shame as he was such a good news story but we already have Caminiti, Sharman and Membrey competing for two spots and in a perfect world, one of Keeler or Heath will start making a claim for a second ruck / resting KPF spot. Not to mention that Owens and Philipous are almost key position sized as well.

Hopefully he can get fit and put together some really good VFL form and at least force the selectors into making a tough choice.

This is very true, if all you had to do is run, AFL would be full of 10,000 metre runners.

Wilson has some smooth skills in match sim, and is an exciting prospect, however he is 18, we don't want to put undue expectations on him.

It’s an elite competition, expectations come with the territory…the kid’s excelled at everything he’s been involved in and at every level, same as Owens!

Billings, Paddy, Spencer White, there should be expectations, but not overly so.

Look at Pou great season, but was shown how much development he still needed in the final.
Nothing like experience and time.

Really haven't seen anything like it from a new recruit.
Repeat 400's, our top runners Windy, Sinc's Battle, Alison in his group.
The others are blowing a gale, he is at the front breathing like a marathon runner.

If he can utilise this in a game, he better have 4 opponents rotating off him as he will destroy an opposition player one on one.

this makes me ****in happy. couple him with guys like sinclair, pou and hill and there's some serious running ability.

And significantly taller.

The difference between good small forwards to the elite is the ability to convert goals with oportunities, strong contested marks, aswell as being good at ground level and applying pressure. Not many players have all the requirements, but what we have seen from Collard in the U18's he has the potential to develop all of those capacities. If he can become a similiar player to Charlie Cameron we will have had a major win.

He runs like Lenny and sells candy too. Imagine Lenny with wheels.

I think Charlie Cameron or anything close to him is setting the bar a bit too high for Collard. Cameron is a freak who kicks more than 50 goals every year, that’s not normal for someone his size. Even Norm Smith medalist Bobby Hill only averaged 1.4 goals for the year.

If one day we’re getting 25-30 goals a year from Lance and he’s using his speed to put immense pressure on that’s a huge win.

I guess i'd hope he is something different to that.

I'm not sure he'll be great as a "pressure forward", but he has potential to be a goal sneak like we haven't had since Milney. ( and no i don't expect him to be as massive as Milney , but i'd like something along those lines. Pressure doesn't hit the scoreboard ).

SNAPSHOT: “A mercurial small forward with a deep bag of tricks, Lance Collard is one of Western Australia’s most exciting prospects, with his ability to create something from nothing.”

West Coast NGA product Lance Collard shapes as one of the more interesting names in this draft class. A top-end talent with some freakish highlights, the Subiaco star is a classy, high-octane small forward, demonstrating similar traits to Bobby Hill or Shai Bolton with his ability to change a game.

After an injury interrupted bottom-age campaign, Collard hit the ground running in 2023, booting 15 goals in the first six games, including a six-goal bag in the WAFL Colts Super Round to earn selection in the West Australian Under 18 squad.

Collard had an indifferent National Carnival, playing forward in a struggling side, but he showed glimpses of his talents, booting two last-quarter goals against Vic Country to almost spark his state to an upset victory.

Returning to Subiaco, the 18-year-old enjoyed a dominant finals series, booting 10 goals across two games to almost lead the Lions further into the postseason off his own boot. He finished the campaign with 32 goals across 11 Colts games to average the most majors of any small forward in the competition.

Which is why I think that Butler is underrated on this board sometimes.
Personally I have him ahead of Higgins. He may not have the tricks around goal that Higgo has, but he does a good bit more as a player during general play...and still manages 30+ goals a season.

With the increased professionalism of the club obvious to all, it is important that every aspect of the club is examined, measured and improved. It seems that the club admin, coaching, support staff, facilities, board and players have all shown considerable improvement. The obvious area left to examine and work to improve, are those supporters who attend training. Their attendance, reports, feedback, contributions and reviews are vital for out of season interest, membership and overall morale.

It is noted that at the moment, the most regular attendees at training, now have their own branded St Kilda caps with "Brains Trust" on each one. Good on this group of dedicated supporters.

This is a great start, but in reality this should be seen as only the start of the supporters involvement and recognition program. May I suggest that the club look at expanding the "Brains Trust" program to include St Kilda caps and group signage, for all other sub groups of supporters at training. The following groups should be catered for in the first phase of the Saints Training Supporters Recognition Program:

- "BF Training Reporters"

- "Out Of Town Member"

- "Should Be At Work"

- "Work Thinks I Am At Work"

- "JHFC" (Just Here For Coffee)

- "DWSFAR" (Dog Walker Stopped For A Rest)

Open to suggestions for other groups that need recognition, caps and official club support for Phase 2 of the Saints Training Supporters Recognition Program
