Training 2024 Pre-Season

I guess i'd hope he is something different to that.

I'm not sure he'll be great as a "pressure forward", but he has potential to be a goal sneak like we haven't had since Milney. ( and no i don't expect him to be as massive as Milney , but i'd like something along those lines. Pressure doesn't hit the scoreboard ).

SNAPSHOT: “A mercurial small forward with a deep bag of tricks, Lance Collard is one of Western Australia’s most exciting prospects, with his ability to create something from nothing.”

West Coast NGA product Lance Collard shapes as one of the more interesting names in this draft class. A top-end talent with some freakish highlights, the Subiaco star is a classy, high-octane small forward, demonstrating similar traits to Bobby Hill or Shai Bolton with his ability to change a game.

After an injury interrupted bottom-age campaign, Collard hit the ground running in 2023, booting 15 goals in the first six games, including a six-goal bag in the WAFL Colts Super Round to earn selection in the West Australian Under 18 squad.

Collard had an indifferent National Carnival, playing forward in a struggling side, but he showed glimpses of his talents, booting two last-quarter goals against Vic Country to almost spark his state to an upset victory.

Returning to Subiaco, the 18-year-old enjoyed a dominant finals series, booting 10 goals across two games to almost lead the Lions further into the postseason off his own boot. He finished the campaign with 32 goals across 11 Colts games to average the most majors of any small forward in the competition.
Pressure has to have some sort of effect on the scoreboard because all the recent premiership teams have three super quick smalls who don’t exactly light it up in front of goal. Some of them average more than a goal a game but most go at around a goal or less.

It’d be nice if he kicked 40+ goals a year but the reality is he probably doesn’t need to. The Charlie Cameron’s and Milne’s of the world are extremely rare.

Lenny was quick and dynamic in close, Hunter is more of a finesse type player. Its good to read he has improved his running over the summer, but the team can only play so many slow inside midfielders eg Crouch & Steele. He does offer something different with his extraction methods, but the way he gets exposed on turn over will always be his achillies heal. I would still have Ross and a fit Jones ahead of Clark and with Dow, Henry and Wilson coming onto the list, unless there are injuries Hunter will struggle to hold his position in the side.

Thats not to suggest he is not AFL quality he is, but there will be other players ahead of him, because of his lack of speed.

If we have Henry, Dow, Hill, and Wilson in the team, his 'lack of pace' ( no slower than Steele or Crouch BTW) is not an issue.

I would have him ahead of Ross and Crouch will be underdone because of little preseason and Jones is on modified training.
It is good to have competition, nobody in the midfield is automatic except maybe Steele.
Clark has had a full preseason and is full of run. He is like Powell was for us. He may look like he is running slowly, but his run will be the same deep in the 4th when other are blowing up.
At training he is doing the exposing with his constant running. He is consistently being played midfield in match sim.
As I said, you don't run both ways in a Lyon team, you do get selected.

Clark has to do 3 things well to be in the team. He has to be up there in
Clearances
Contested Possessions
Effective Possessions.

He also needs to be an accountable almost lockdown backman when required.

Do not want him to have high stats in uncontentesed Possessions and hand ball receives.

That's where the Sincs Nas Hill and most likely Henry/Wilson want to be leading those stats along with bounces.

Phillipou Wood and Owens goals contested marks and inside 50 entries.

If that is not how it plays out then there is something wrong with the gameplan or I am on drugs and know nothing about football, which is very possible.

If we have Dow, Henry and Wilson in the side Clark is garuanteed to miss out. Thats exactly why we recruited them and more speed at the draft, because of how badly our slow midfield were exposed last season. As you suggested Clark will maintain pressure on others, but I doubt he is best 23. As I said no team can afford to play more than two slow inside mids and we are exactly the same. In no world is he better than Crouch or Steele at the role and Dow offers break away speed.

Powell is a poor comparison as it was a very different era and Powell was slow but could run all day - Clark cant and never has been able to. His average TOG last season was the worst of any other midfielder on our list, its obvious that other players will go past him.

I hope Hunter does have a break out year, but he has 6-7 years on the list and that hasnt occurred, so the odds are against him. You are also being a bit biased as you have written Max Heath 205cm's off after two years on the list, because of his lack of running capacities but defend Clark who has the same weakness to his game.

Yep 100%.

For Clark to get that regular mid spot his output in close needs to be better than that of Crouch and Ross, because defensively he's not good enough (mainly defensive transition). That is where he has let the team down. Too many times you see him look like he's on a treadmill trying to cover oppo players on the spread and it completely breaks down the entire press. At least that's one thing that Ross and Crouch are much better at.

There's no doubt that Hunts has ability, no one has ever questioned that. But if he's not consistently performing, or isn't fit enough then he's just not going to be the mid we hope he will.

Also surprisingly tall. Would not be surprised if he has grown to 190/191. I would love to see him spend some time on the ball as part of his development. Imagine if he becomes like our silk Burgoyne. Perhaps he gets a little los tin the hype around POu and Chito
Has also shown his true professionalism and maturity to his footy career by not only commiting to the club with all the rumours of his homesickness but then grabbing the bull by the horns and training the house down in the pre-season. Nas looks committed in every way and we should be excited with what he is going to produce this year.

With the increased professionalism of the club obvious to all, it is important that every aspect of the club is examined, measured and improved. It seems that the club admin, coaching, support staff, facilities, board and players have all shown considerable improvement. The obvious area left to examine and work to improve, are those supporters who attend training. Their attendance, reports, feedback, contributions and reviews are vital for out of season interest, membership and overall morale.

It is noted that at the moment, the most regular attendees at training, now have their own branded St Kilda caps with "Brains Trust" on each one. Good on this group of dedicated supporters.

This is a great start, but in reality this should be seen as only the start of the supporters involvement and recognition program. May I suggest that the club look at expanding the "Brains Trust" program to include St Kilda caps and group signage, for all other sub groups of supporters at training. The following groups should be catered for in the first phase of the Saints Training Supporters Recognition Program:

- "BF Training Reporters"

- "Out Of Town Member"

- "Should Be At Work"

- "Work Thinks I Am At Work"

- "JHFC" (Just Here For Coffee)

- "DWSFAR" (Dog Walker Stopped For A Rest)

Open to suggestions for other groups that need recognition, caps and official club support for Phase 2 of the Saints Training Supporters Recognition Program

Would love for Naz to become a real leader for us and to the younings from interstate.

Wasn't necessarily targeting you with my post.
I think Clark has a unique skillet in the team and that can be utilised in a Lyon coached team that has pace.
I feel he is nothing like Lenny, Steele is our Lenny, his huge tools are his extraction at stoppages, his disposal of both feet( can open a zone with his ulternate use of foot) and his bravery.
He doesn't need to be Micky Conlan, he doesn't need to be quick, but he does need to be fit to run both ways.
Regardless of his skillset, if he doesn't run both ways he won't be in a Lyon coached team.

We've got a few pushing for the midfield.
Crouch and Steele. Automatic in's. Unless Crouch goes downhill , he's one of the best contested ball winner/clearance players in the AFL.
Ross. Probably the one to push out, but if he's in form, he's doing a fair bit.
Clark. Goes OK, but wasn't excelling in any area.
Jones. Can he hold it together. Has to get back to his 2020/2021 levels.
Windhager. Has done tagging roles, but has potential to do so much more. Had a big pre-season and may push out any of Ross/Clark/Jones.
Henry will probably spend most of his time on the wing, but could end up doing what Ross does, but faster.
Owens and Phillipou, have mainly been used in the forward line, but we'd hope that both end up as mids.
Dow. If Jones can't cut it , Dow might be the one to use his pace and ball winning to push him out.
Byrnes. If he improves on last year, he might give Clark or Ross a run for their money, though he may also have others pushing up past him.

Hotton. Really haven't seen much of him, but VFL will be interesting.
Wilson. Probably more likely to debut in the forward line , but his endurance means he is a chance at getting gametime.

Of those 14, there can only be 7 or so in the 22 as midfielders any given week.
