10 kids in one year?

One would call that a tanking focussed year.

Or a rip the guts outa ya list and rebuild it from the ground up focussed year.
Nar, he said rotated.
Anyway we only really have 10 kids that qualify and there's just no way that some of them will see action this year.

Heard Fagan this morning on SEN. He was saying how they'd only just had their first 18 on 18 match sim. Has all been small ground work until now.

That's what I've seen for our sessions. 30 x 30 metre box with about 5 on 5. Then 50 metre then half ground. Longest I saw up until about 3 weeks ago when I went back to work was 3/4 ground.

He said they were training "reaction" as that's where they felt Collingwood beat them (and also out on the wings with the players the Pies could rotate through there and not drop off). Reaction sounded like to me like the ruler drop in football action. All jokes aside, who reacts quickest to what the footy does. In close, ball bobbling about who gets it? You could tell Fagan thought the Pies did so they are hammering at it.

It's why Pou was shitty and NAS looked like "what's the fuss" over the ruler challenge. Pou understands and wants to get to being like NAS. Reaction is the difference between good and great in 2024 Aussie Rules footy.

Ross a month ago literally said there would be games at AFL level for all of our draftees in 2024.

Thats 5.

Caminiti and Pou are both still kids and only Pou would be considered a Best 22 player.

That’s 7.

Hotton Keeler McLennan Heath

That’s 11.

Door is wide open for McLennan if he can impress in the practice games. If Keeler excels in defence you would imagine he gets a taste at the level.

Wilson is a cert

Colllard likely for a taste in the first 5/6 weeks with Butler injured.

It isn’t inconceivable when you break it down. We got 100+ games into 5 kids last year.

You could imagine similar via rotation.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but this would be interesting to assess teenage draftees back to 2017 in the same view (after 12-24 months on the list).

Owens, Windhager, NWM - Best 22
Jack Peris - Played a good debut game and I think was cut too early. The club must have seen signs of his football ability plateauing.
Oscar Adams - Wasn't given enough time to come on for a 197cm KPD, had some off field issues I believe (but could be wrong about that).
Tom Highmore - Disposal by foot hampered his career. Was destined to be a GOP as a result, not tall enough for a KPD.
Matt Allison - No decent performances at VFL level in his first 2 years
Max Heath - A long term prospect with no expectations after 24 months.
Ryan Byrnes - Taking a long time to come on, surprised he is being persisted with.
Leo Connolly - Did not hear too much about him during development, didn't stand out at VFL level.
Max King - Best 22
Jack Bytel - Injury ridden, was a prospect that didn't come on (or wasn't given the opportunity).
Hunter Clark - Should have been a core part of the side for a pick 7
Nick Coffield - Injury prone and struggled to prove himself at AFL level (see how he goes at the Bulldogs)
Oscar Clavarino - Never seemed to be a likely prospect
Ben Paton - Injuries aside, if he kept his form prior to breaking his leg would be best 22.

I don't think I've seen the level of excitement and positivity in our current recruits with any of these other draftees.

I would have Ronny over Paton any day of the week

Ross does tend to do what he says he will, but it was easy last year due to the injuries.
10 kids over 22 games. 2 games each, but that's not very healthy.

Wilson will get plenty
Lance should play till Butts is back
Guss worth a few
Garcia sounds similar
Hammer and Pou obviously, but l don't them as they're a known quality.

After that it gets a bit too speculative.
Hotton back in the pack ATM
Moose, Keeler, JVE, Ari, Allison probably have a harder time as you can't hide them anywhere.
I'd like to see Moose get a couple against Norff and WC and we do want JVE to make strides asap. The others I'm not fussed about.

Interesting, I didn’t hear it that way in my head. I heard it more as Ross wants a winning team, but he won’t neglect the kids.

At this stage I don’t think Ross will hand out games, unless something goes drastically wrong with the season.

I think Wilson has shown enough to get an early opportunity. But, I think he cycles through the fringe players like Jones, Bonner and Byrnes before he reaches into the cookie jar.

I’m hopeful that Garcia has done enough to convince Ross that he can fill gaps. But, I’m actually more inclined to think that Arie gets a game before him.

If Butler doesn’t come up who do you think is more likely to fill his role?

He just said a group of 10 - I’m sure it’s not necessarily that they all get games. But obviously they expect that group to push for some.

They are backing the youth and expect to run it alongside our expectations of finals.

Ross Lyon named Wilson, Arie and Collard as likely debutants this season

Even better than reacting is correctly anticipating.

We were utterly flogged in the centre square against the giants (and more generally during the whole year against decent midfields).

We need some centre square mids who can better anticipate where the ball is going in the centre square.

(Roma getting better at actual rucking would go a long way to helping with this)

If we'd taken Simpson along with Wilson and Garcia then that's 3 of exactly the same type in 1 draft.

All along they said it would be 3 draftees and by the looks of it we were super fortunate to get both Wilson and Collard well below their projected places.
Taking Hastie with our last intended pick (#26 disregarding NGA/FS) would have come down to nothing more than him filtering up in the club's spreadsheet, the same one as is responsible for all the other selections.
Drafting is not any one person's call any more. Players are rated by committee and called by a spreadsheet.
People with an eye for talent just rate those yet to blossom types higher amongst the guff of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round types.
Simpson V's Garcia is the game IMO.
15 picks apart.

On a side note, we should be kissing GWS's arse if this draft works out.
They took Gothard which pushed Leake down, paid us a 2nd for Leake and then sold us the pick for Garcia. Thanks for coming.

Simpson was more inside like Stuv. I think he would have added something myself. We are still a bit light on for quality mids. Wilson is much more of an outside runner. Garcia looks like a good little speedy utility type that can play multiple roles.

Hastie looks pretty good but he's going to cop the comparison if Simpson is a gun and he's not. Footy is a tough business.

If we get a KPB injury one of Van Es or Keeler might need to be fast tracked. Maybe even Schooey. Same with the ruck. Very possible that we have to use Moose at some point. We've been pretty lucky not to have ruck depth tested.

We had Hunter play seven games in 2021.
Wasn't good.

Ro only played 13.
