I thought Byrnes had a pretty good 2nd year.
I know some on here didn't rate him, but i doubt the club was ever going to let him go.

In 2022 he was probably competing with Daniel McKenzie and Windhager for a spot.
I rate him as the kind of GOP that's good to have on your list. Midfielder down, bring him in.
( Not to say he wont get better ).
Will be interesting to see how many games he gets this year. More competition with Dow , and hopefully fit Jones.
Interesting Goddard made a comment about him , something like he was impressed in his continued improvement / highly impressed with him and from a guy that doesn't give out to many plaudits -( is is above Owens , Phillipou and Windhager) Byrne still only 22 and one of the best gut runners in the squad could overtake a few of the more fantasy players who where drafted way higher.
A lot of the time this kids don't hit there straps until they crack 24 and the way Byrne has improved every year he could be a very good player - the work he is putting in on the track could well pay off.

Obvs time will tell but Simpson has been absolutely ripping it up at Freo by the looks, bits of vision of him he looks like an absolute weapon.

Schoonermonster is NOT a small dude…

I’m just glad to see he’s finally taking things seriously and is looking like a professional footballer.

I’m a little annoyed we went for Hastie over Simpson, especially if it was enright’s call who is not a recruiter..

Can’t imagine it being solely Enright call with toce and sos in the room.

Apparently Corey Enright was very keen on Hastie before the draft.

Shifter Sheehan said Hastie was the best player at the Geelong Falcons last year. Cats were very disappointed we nabbed him.

Hastie looks to have beautiful judgement, safe hands, elite evasive skills, good disposal skills and is a good decision maker. That will do me.

He still needs to bulk up and physically develop. But he is a lad who appears to have slipped under the radar. A genuine long term prospect.

I can see him cementing a position in our defensive 6 later in the year.
That's a pretty optimistic timeline. He'll have to displace someone, but l can't see who it would be unless there's a long term injury.

Have a look at the jaw on the Schooeydestroyer. Heard he sculls em, then eats the glass afterwards to assert dominance.

And the shoulders, you could use them as the foundation for a bridge. Absolute unit.

SOS was telling me 2025-26 is when they are hoping for him to nail a position down.

Apparently they hoped Hastie would sit in a group of 10 kids who should be rotated in and out of the senior side throughout the season.
One would call that a development focused year then?
It'll be interesting to see how much they value another finals appearance as the year progresses.

Yes he did, but who does he keep out of the team this year assuming we don't have the same injury crisis and also in consideration of the new players at the club. If he plays 17 games this year it either means he's improved considerably or the players we bought in haven't improved us.

Harsh but the 2023 version of Byrnes isn't best 23 in a side that is still around in the final two weeks of finals.
If he continues his trajectory then he'll be genuinely best 22 as the older guys start to feel their age or get injuries. It's a good scenario.

10 kids in one year?

One would call that a tanking focussed year.

Or a rip the guts outa ya list and rebuild it from the ground up focussed year.

If we'd taken Simpson along with Wilson and Garcia then that's 3 of exactly the same type in 1 draft.

All along they said it would be 3 draftees and by the looks of it we were super fortunate to get both Wilson and Collard well below their projected places.
Taking Hastie with our last intended pick (#26 disregarding NGA/FS) would have come down to nothing more than him filtering up in the club's spreadsheet, the same one as is responsible for all the other selections.
Drafting is not any one person's call any more. Players are rated by committee and called by a spreadsheet.
People with an eye for talent just rate those yet to blossom types higher amongst the guff of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round types.
Simpson V's Garcia is the game IMO.
15 picks apart.

On a side note, we should be kissing GWS's arse if this draft works out.
They took Gothard which pushed Leake down, paid us a 2nd for Leake and then sold us the pick for Garcia. Thanks for coming.
