If we play the same 22 week in, week out, with no changes other than injury and form, finish 6th and win a final, would we be happy with that? I wouldn't.

I'd rather finish 8th and see glimpses of the future.

What I don't want to see is us dropping to the bottom 4.
So dropping players playing well throughout the season for kids with average VFL form is what you want to happen?

Regardless of age, the players with the best form should play every week. If that means 3 draftees make the best 22 or none, that's fine. Give the games to those who warrant it rather than gifting for the sake of being able to say we are playing more kids. We've drafted good enough players over the past 3 years that they will play games on merit.

Give me 6th and a finals win cheersh

Ross a month ago literally said there would be games at AFL level for all of our draftees in 2024.

Thats 5.

Caminiti and Pou are both still kids and only Pou would be considered a Best 22 player.

That’s 7.

Hotton Keeler McLennan Heath

That’s 11.

Door is wide open for McLennan if he can impress in the practice games. If Keeler excels in defence you would imagine he gets a taste at the level.

Wilson is a cert

Colllard likely for a taste in the first 5/6 weeks with Butler injured.

It isn’t inconceivable when you break it down. We got 100+ games into 5 kids last year.

You could imagine similar via rotation.
back in 2009. ross played the same 24 -28 players for 20 games.

and you could question why.
Raph played 16 games. ( probably injured for the others ).
Gwilt and Geary played 15 games.
McEvoy played 11. ( Not sure why, King and Gardiner were mostly available , one of them playing forward )?
Rob Eddy 10 ( Scraping the barrel ).
Dempster 9 ( Injury)
Hudghton 7 ( Pushed out by Dawson ).
Armitage 3 ( Some thought he should have been in ahead of Eddy ).
Colm Begley 1 ( Scraping the barrel ).
Jack Steven 1 ( 14 disposals in his first game ).

So of those he could have tried to get a few more games into Armitage and Steven.

Others who didn't get a game were either injured or worse at VFL than everyone already mentioned.

My recollection is Armo was injured during the first half of the 2009 season.

McEvoy, Gardiner and King only played one game together (Round 19, which was also the Begley and Steven game).

Geary played the first 15, Gwilt didn't play after Round 19 IIRC.

Max, Armo & Stuv all had injury interrupted seasons too.

So the only other "youth" we could have played were :
Nick Heyne, Rhys Stanley ( very young and green ) , Tom Lynch , Brad Howard ( had already been delisted and rookied ), Eljay Connors, Alistair Smith , etc.

If Jones is injured it's obviously not ideal, and when he's right he really does add something different and useful to our midfield with his burst from stoppage pace, but he's so frequently injured I almost forget he's even on the list anymore. We've done well without him, and can continue to do so.
Although we do need Crouch back, and Paddy would be very useful too.
Crouch is the big one for me. I think his contribution is underrated.

Even better than reacting is correctly anticipating.

We were utterly flogged in the centre square against the giants (and more generally during the whole year against decent midfields).

We need some centre square mids who can better anticipate where the ball is going in the centre square.

(Roma getting better at actual rucking would go a long way to helping with this)
Hoping Dow is that player..

If we'd taken Simpson along with Wilson and Garcia then that's 3 of exactly the same type in 1 draft.

All along they said it would be 3 draftees and by the looks of it we were super fortunate to get both Wilson and Collard well below their projected places.
Taking Hastie with our last intended pick (#26 disregarding NGA/FS) would have come down to nothing more than him filtering up in the club's spreadsheet, the same one as is responsible for all the other selections.
Drafting is not any one person's call any more. Players are rated by committee and called by a spreadsheet.
People with an eye for talent just rate those yet to blossom types higher amongst the guff of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round types.
Simpson V's Garcia is the game IMO.
15 picks apart.

On a side note, we should be kissing GWS's arse if this draft works out.
They took Gothard which pushed Leake down, paid us a 2nd for Leake and then sold us the pick for Garcia. Thanks for coming.
Some flighty post-rationalising amongst some salient points. IMO.. I liked Simpson more haha and I think he will be a powerful little mid-half forward for a long time. I think he's closest to hotton rather than Garcia or Wilson. Hopefully not though and Hastie kills it
