Welcome to Hawthorn Baz.

Can I say first up, that is terrible for Smith. Just getting into training again and that happens would be shocking for him.

I feel it helps our position though as he wont play for the Dogs at all next year.
It should make it easier for him to leave them and join us.

The distinction between shattered young man and damaged asset is easily blurred on BF unfortunately.
Professional footy is a business. Anyone who thinks Mitchell or McKenzie's first reaction would be empathetic rather than assessing list management & trade value are kidding themselves.

I would expect short of someone being a full-blown psychopath that their first reaction would be the instinctual human response.

How? Why should that be a reaction at all. Not like a deal can be done this week or month, so why even entertain a thought.

I understand many will think that way but we need to try and train our minds to not think that way. We can think of his trade value after end of 2024 season.

I am sure MM will touch base with his manager to convey our sympathies and ask to be kept informed of his recovery & to be kept in loop.

Just on the Bailey Smith injury - I’d be curious to know how it happened.

Considering the rain Melbourne has had in the last 48 to 72 hours I would’ve thought clubs would be extremely cautious training on wet ovals and/or in running shoes, despite how well the ovals may drain.

Ligament are much more vulnerable in pre and early season training or games.

It's much more common for ACLs to be done during the warm and dry months when grounds are hard.
