Ventured out to training this morning.
Outside training started at 8.00 am and finished at 10.35 am. Temperature at 10.30 am, 30 C.
Will was only sighted walking the boundary in different casual type gear. A few handballs while walking was all i noticed.

I heard one coach say to Fagan, there are 46 training today including ?? (i could not hear). Probably academy players.
The rehab group that i could see had only 3 players, 2 being on our AFL list. Reece Torrent (image) and Carter Michael (image).
The no contact group (image) was just Berry, Doedee, Robertson (large wrist brace gone) & Carter Michael joining them in running.
I would class the majority of the session as still being skill based.
The match sims were competitive, but no one was going in real hard that could have resulted in another player getting injured.
Similar to last year at this stage when i attended training.

Going on memory which is a bit dodgy these days.
Warm up for about 15/20 minutes with no running drills involved. Just moving the ball around so won't go into that bit.
Players had a navy-blue kit with numbers so that was good. The numbers part for me was anyhow.

Then the squad was divided into 2 groups both doing the same exercise on either side of the ground.

See the restricted drill playing area noted on the AFL ground image below.

Blue "A" A very confined space.
They started 9 v 9 (2 on bench). A kicking only drill. You had to find someone leading. Non-stop for 7 minutes.
The countdown time was up on the scoreboard. Repeated this drill again.
Next still in Blue "A" area. A handball only drill, non-stop for 7 minutes. Repeated this drill again.
So, 7 minutes x 2 then 7 minutes x 2 again.

Next
Pink "B" Larger area than Blue "A" but still a confined space especially across the ground.

Increased the size of the playing field, still 9 v 9 and a couple on bench i believe. All game skills involved this time.
These were 10 minutes in duration x 2 i think.

A few players swapped kit and most likely some positional changes.

After this they broke up into a few groups and did different things. Ball control fun drills by hand. Ruck contests and others.
I only looked at the ones on my side.

Then they played the whole ground in a match sim. Duration was 10 minutes x 3 i think.

Players were getting tired, so they then played "last 2/3 minutes of the quarter drill".
Timer up on the scoreboard 2-minute countdown one team was nominated as being say 4 points up.
Then a one-minute break and at it again but this time 3 minutes remaining. They possibly changed which team was leading.
They did these drills 3 or 4 times.
At the very end of one drill Brendon Ryan marked about 45 meters out and nailed the goal.
Players cheered so i assume that was the only time a team came from behind to win.

Players may have thought that was it for the day as it was past a 2-hour session.
Next and last was some running drills between the square lines being 50 meters.
All players that could run competed, so around the 50 mark. Unfortunately, i deleted the wrong image showing that large number.
They had to run to the opposite square line and back, keep running and repeat that again.
A short rest. Repeat the above again.
A short break then to the line again and back just the once this time and that was the end of the session.
The players were struggling big time to finish the session. However, they recovered quickly as elite sports people do.

Two whiteboard teams taken from yesterdays training. Photo taken from a long way away but quite readable.
They are 18 a side teams so would be the players used in the full ground sims later in the session.
The coaches could have changed players around before it started or during the sim.
I doubt Hippy will be playing defense as he did yesterday in the full ground sim. Gardiner was also playing forward again.
The interesting ones being Zorko, Fletcher, Wilmot, Answerth.
Something for us on BF to chat about and end up getting it completely wrong:)

Awesome stuff, thanks Section 5!

Sounds like a real focus on ball movement which I think is exciting.

My only concern would be about whether we have spent enough time and effort on our defence. Obviously we want our team to be good to watch but to get the ball in the first place you have to be able to defend and dispossess. Would not like to see us come out in Round 1 and get smashed physically because we aren't ready for the contest like what happened last year.

Hoping to get along to the intraclub matches next couple of weeks.

Do we have Lohman's brother in the VFL team this year?

I am sure we have regarding defense.
Only the players and coaches would know if defense focus was the same, more, or less time this year than previous seasons.
We went one week deeper into finals last year and start round zero one week earlier.
However, that is only one week less than Carlton and we play at home so can't use that as an excuse.
Round 1 is always hard to win especially if up against a team you knocked out of the PF last year.
We probably go in favorites as it's at The Gabba, but it is really a 50/50 game.

Gardiner at CHF is interesting

Link below to my photos from training Friday. Just 30 photos on the link.
My Flickr account is different to Mr Ripper.
Mine is "Public" so anyone can download or share the images if they wish.

To view click on the first image, then view each one separately >.
Or if you prefer a "Slideshow", go to top right of page. Click on the icon that looks like a TV/Computer monitor.
Press escape when it starts to repeat.
Could be a bit different process on a mobile phone though.

Zorko down back is concerning, Hipwood down back is confusing
Won't hurt Hippy to spend a bit of time down back during the preseason. Learning a bit more about how defenders operate should improve his game in attack and defense up fwd. Like Gardiner he's also been thru a heap of preseasons now so a bit of a change, fresh approach could be good for him/them. Looking at the team boards Zorks down back is just giving opportunity to others a run as sm fwd/mid. Also a lot of talls in those fwd lines, I'd reckon assessing and forming a pecking order with Ryan, Henry Smith, and the 2 tall draftees.

Notable absentees from the boards are Berry and Dev. Also didn't see ZZ on either board, is he injured as well?

Also some names I don't recognise, Manly, Martyn, Macpherson, Thomas, Hube or Kube. Could someone fill me in please?

Dev has apparently re-injured he’s wrist again likely missing early in the season

VFL players
From what I could discover
Ewan Macpherson an inside mid/defender 185cms from footscray
Will Martyn I should have recognised, former Academy and Richmond player. Mid 179cms
Liam Hude, former academy lad, fwd 187cms
Jack Manly, academy lad, 178cms assuming small fwd
Is it Dylan Thomas? 187cms, a former Collingwood development player. No sure on position.

Did I get these right?
