Maybe Zorko pushes back.
Opening up a spot further up the ground for someone like Lohmann
It's interesting that the first instinct to replace an injured HB is to move a sm fwd/mid down back. I'm not saying that Zorko couldn't do the job but is it really necessary to open up a spot for Lohmann up fwd? It's not the fwds that have lost a player, they haven't been weakened, it's the half back line that needs to be shored up. We have 3 very capable half backs, Prior, Madden and Answerth, all better defensively in that position than Zorko. First up against Carlton, I think we will need to be as tight defensively as we can be. I lean slightly towards Prior, probably stronger defensively than Madden but not as creative.

id probably prefer to favour offensive capability over defensive when looking at who takes mckenna's spot if he cant play carlton

all of our half backs got off the chain massively against carlton in the prelim because they could largely ignore them as offensive threats (they all kind of suck) and the carlton small forwards paid no respect to coleman or mckenna in particular. docherty on coleman match up was probably game losing in of itself for carlton, he pushed up to stoppage constantly and coleman essentially played without any accountability.

Maybe Answerth?

Nah. We need someone new/different. We know what Answerth brings to table, hard nut lockdown defender who puts his body on the line and has average disposal skills + gets caught too often lately trying to do too much.

Brain would be a good choice to try. Either Brain or Prior who has put on some size this offseason.

Connor McKenna has picked up a Hammy issue, touch and go for Opening Round.
If he does not get up for opening round that will put the quash on any coaching thoughts of Wilmot playing wing.
Opening round is 4 weeks away so he should be okay you would think but a bit underdone.
Like all clubs we don't want any more injuries to happen but if they occur the Lions will just have to deal with it.

I agree that Prior would be my first choice replacement for the HBF, he can play that role well as well as rotate onto the wing as required (easy to keep swapping with Wilmot on field). Answerth for me is more Starc's backup as the lockdown small. His skills probably arent at the level to replace Kiddy or McKenna.

Im not a huge fan of Madden, he's quick but Im not seeing a heap more than that. I have him further down the pecking order than most

Personally I think Madden is a lot better defensively than Prior and his pace would be a real asset against Carlton. Getting the ball the other way is the issue with Madden for me. I love his burst but at AFL level he has not got enough of it consistently enough. If he were with a lesser team I think he could be a regular player or if Starc got a LTI but he has been stuck in the line for a long while now. I still remember the Leigh comment to him from a few years ago (along the lines that if he kept playing like he did in that game he would have a long career) and I keep waiting but we have yet to see him really get another shot.

Brain the issue has already been mentioned. Did Prior need size? I just think he’s very solid but needs to find a weapon

Wouldnt mind seeing Answerth free up Starce like Payne has done for Andrews. I think apart from the howlers Starce is a decent kick, if he can reduce the howlers he could be quite handy distributing off half back

Gardiner playing forward

3:00 Joe gets a free kick after Starce holds onto him in the marking contest. His set shot from 50 starts straight but fades right. 1-0

Tough game played largely between the wings.

8:00 Bailey at right half forward lowers the eyes and hits up Gardiner who marks uncontested 25 out directly in front. His set shot fades left. 2-0

11:00 After a strong build up by the Bears, an on target snap by Reville is punched through by a diving Oscar. 2-1

12:00 Wilmot takes a good intercept mark on the wing. After a couple of lateral kicks Rayner gathers a ground ball inside 50 and his kick comes off the side of his boot but straight to McCarthy. From the pocket his snap set shot is across the face. 3-1

20:00 Wilmot gives away a free kick to Ben Thomas at a ball up just inside 50 for the Bears. His set shot is just away to the right. 3-2

25:00 Right on quarter time one of the Bears players at the far behind post handballs one through to level the scores. 3-3

You. Are. Missing. Little.

Pretty dour game, skills not great, splashes everywhere, lots of kick to kick under pressure. Rain intensified during the quarter.

2nd quarter

4:00 Jack Manly spots up Zac Derkson inside 50 with a nice short pass. His set shot tho is right across the face and doesn't make the distance.

6:00 After Starce kicks out on the full, JL kicks to the top of the square where Ryan takes a nice contested mark. And at long last we have a goal! 9-3

Hipwood goes into the ruck for the midget-Bears

7:00 Brilliant left foot snap from Rayner who was the last in a long line of blokes who queued up to gather a hurried low kick inside 50. 15-3

8:00 After a marking contest on the goal line and an ensuing scramble, Andrews walks over the behind line. 15-4

Gardiner beats Lester pointless at half forward, and then hits up McCarthy with a pinpoint left foot pass round the boundary. McCarthy can't make the distance and the Bears clear.

Dunkley unsighted this quarter. Been on the bench the whole time.

13:00 Great contested overhead mark by Fletcher between wing and half forward, and then another by Joe about 30 out. His set shot is superb. Lions getting on top a bit now. 21-4

14:00 Great clearance and build up out of the middle, ends with a hurried snap off target from Bailey. 22-4

Jack Payne drops an easy chest mark in the middle and then tackles Wilmot his own team mate! Meanwhile the Bears hook it forward where Morris gathers on 50. With nobody forward of him he tumbles it forward but into the behind post.

Answerth having a big game. Tunstill not far behind.

24:00 Bailey receives a handball out the front of congestion and then a lovely left foot kick finds Ryan who takes a strong contested mark. Gets a 50 for his troubles and converts from the goal square. 28-4

25:00 Out of middle JL hacks a kick forward and Joe takes a diving mark. From 45 directly in front he bombs it through. 34-4

Better quarter. Lions started getting on top via their ability to win the ball a bit more often and use it better when they did.
