Real talk, it’s going to largely benefit teams in Victoria much more so than teams up here for example.

Much, much easier for players to jump around between clubs when you’re essentially just changing where you’re commuting to/from every day. Very difficult in comparison to uproot your life and family in mid-season and relocate interstate

I think the mid-season draft is less problematic than a mid-season trade period. Going from undrafted to drafted, you move to take the opportunity and the picks are tethered to rankings (so realistically probably the same issues as the ND). Whereas a mid-season trade period would be a huge leg up to all the Vic sides for the reasons you've expressed. It'd largely be Vic players going to other Vic sides.

Fantastic shots Mr Rip, all the boys look in ripping nick, Rayner and Lyons stood out re their body condition IMO. However I think Kiddy looks like he is still carrying a few extra pounds... I could be wrong, might be just his body shape/posture.

Faded from the game on Friday I thought. Again...

Kiddy could be like Matho, no matter how hard he trains his composition/genetics just wont allow him to become a good endurance player.
He was very good early with his kicking and run from the back half.
One kick from a kick in, must have been close to a 60m low and flat kick into the centre of the ground which completely opened up the play and resulted in a goal for his team.

God I hope this doesn't come across the wrong way. You make a good point about Kiddy, some players are not endurance athletes which started me thinking, First Nations players I've read always have some problem putting on muscle bulk. They are generally wiry, super quick off the mark, type players, the X factor a good team needs. Maybe Brad Hill is an exception to the long distance running type players amount the first Nations boys. Adam Goodes was certainly an exception for bulk in size and maybe Buddy Franklin over time. In general, a full blooded First Nations player has the wiry build, the excitement machines, Rioli, Cameron, the Crackers etc. Is is just my perception or is there a general 'type' of body size and shape the aboriginal boys have that is maybe about genetics.

There are lots of different body shapes among First Nations players in the NRL over the years. Tall and stocky builds like Artie Beetson or Sam Thaiday, tall and athletic builds like Greg Inglis, short and stocky like Adam Reynolds, shorter and slim like Jonathan Thurston.

Our game favours speed and agility and so players with the build that enables those attributes, regardless of cultural heritage, are more likely to make it in the AFL. Still, there are plenty of players either with height (Franklin, Goodes, Polly, Steve Michael, Ryder etc) or who are not skinny as such (Chris Johnson, McLeod, Burgoyne, etc) who have played very high levels of footy. So there is some variance there.

I also read an article many years ago that, IIRC, talked about how the average height of First Nations men from footy states like WA, NT and SA tends to be shorter than First Nations men from coastal NSW and Qld where AFL doesn't have the same talent pipeline where the population tends to be taller. It was put forward that that was part of the reason why there were comparatively fewer tall First Nations players in the AFL at that time.

You start your season with a club ,learn all the plans and strategies ,get to know who's carrying something and who's not , get through all of this with whatever mechanisms the team is using to win games and stop an opposition , and then your player is able to go to an opposition club mid season and spill all the beans about whatever it is you've been or are planning and how you intend to do it and who with.

It's a slippery slope . Surely if you're contracted for a season that's a mental and financial commitment from the club and the player.
An awful lot of codes navigate this including a few in Australia but for some reason it’s a slippery slope for AFL.

not sure I understand that logic and perhaps AFL just need to mature

Below a few players that some may not recognize along with their numbers.
(13) Logan Morris, (19) Luke Lloyd, (24) Brandon Ryan, (25) Henry Smith
(34) Shadeau Brain, (36) Reece Torrent, (45) Kalin Lane

I think we'll see a lot of clubs employ this tactic in 2024, as I've mentioned a few times.

Thought Eric and Joe were pretty ordinary really. Joe especially. Hopefully just going through the motions and ready to hit their straps when we start playing for points.

I didn't get that sense particularly. Having said that 90-58 in a shortened game would translate to probably around 120-77 in a full length game, which is reasonably high scoring in this day and age given the average score is in the low-mid 80s. For this calc I've assumed 2x20 minute quarters (which there were) and 2x25 minute quarters (when they stopped the clock only after goals in the 2nd half), and compared to a normal 4x30 minute quarters. A normal game would be a 33% increase in yesterday's game time.

Yeah I thought most of the midfield was fairly bland to be honest. Bailey stood out a bit but then most things he does do stand out, it's just how he plays. JL and Tunstill caught my eye once or twice. Not enough to move the needle though I wouldn't have thought.

Most of the centre bounce clearances were hurried kicks forward. I can only remember one occasion where we chained out of there by hand and when we did the forward line was VERY open.
By the sounds of our team sucks and we shouldn’t bother turning up this year.

First preseason trial and the negativity is strong

He was giving his honest appraisal and did a fantastic job summarising the four quarters. It's not like he's saying it's doom and gloom for the season.

If anyone was having a negative reaction, it was you to a reasonable post.

I think it was a misfiring attempt at sarcasm but seriously why on earth would someone like Daniher be having a go in a scratch match. The bottom line for most of these guys is to get some extra fitness under the belt but most crucially come through unscathed. The ones who are really trying want to stake a claim for a spot.

We used to have term March champions for all the practice match stars . Same now except it's February.

Nonetheless many thanks and kudos to the guys who put up the match reports and pics. It's always interesting to get a look at how some of the hopefuls might stack up and any likely tweaks to the game plan.

It's highly doubtful Logan Morris will get a look in this year but that was one helluva grab he took and to do that and kick a few goals you have to have talent . The guys I really want to see kick on this year are Tunstill , Ah Chee , maybe Dev , anyone else who puts their hand up. If they can go from depth to permanent spots is what provides improvement in the team.

Everyone talks about Cam and Bailey. I think what you've seen is what you get. Sure they can potentially rip a game apart on a given day but to me they're icing on the cake who will do it more often if our footsoldiers are more plentiful and we bat deeper.

For those in attendance, how’d Brain perform? He built some good form in the VFL last year.
I have noticed him at training, and he puts in a good effort.
He played fairly well in the Friday game.
Had a bad run with injuries but so far so good this year.
Cat B rookie along with Reville so someone needs to be placed on the LTI list for either of those two to play.
If he gets a run at AFL level i think he would perform and fill a role.
But it is hard to tell with these types of players until you see them at a higher level.

How’s Answerth looking Section? He obviously missed a lot of last season and being one of those in the middle of our age profile, you’d expect something from or he is a fair way down the pecking order?

Thank you for the share - that's awesome, especially catching the Logan Morris 1st quarter mark between 3 players :)

I love this pic too, kid's showing a bit of mongrel to stay with Harris and try to spoil him. I'm guessing this is after he lit up first quarter and they moved Andrews to him to make it harder.

Logan Morris is on the shorter side for a KPF at 191cm although Jack Reiwoldt was only 193cm.. interestingly Morris is on lions.com as weighing 90kg so he is a solid lump of a lad for his height, may play earlier than we expect.

Brendan Fevola was 191cm. No pressure on goalkicking front as well as avoid being a dlckhead front.

I'm hoping he grows a bit more. Oscar Allen was 191cm when drafted, and grew to 196 over the next two years.

I do like that he has that hard edge to his game.
