Haven't watched the whole game yet, seems like a pretty rough viewing.

I think there are two main takeaways.

We got lucky in the end.

We got ourselves in the position to get lucky consistently over the second half of the game.

Freo fans are right to feel a bit cheated. Although they should probably direct some of that at Jordan Clark

We took their best hits like Rocky versus Ivan Drago and then landed the killer blow. Ugly way to win and the game as a spectacle was not good to watch. We'll take the win though. Once Charlie got that goal to drag it back to four points I felt like we were going to win it.

There is still so much improvement in the team to come in terms of personnel and playing style. All we can do at the minute is keep winning in any way possible.

Georgie was huge. Back to his solid dependable best. Warrior. Crippa reasonably solid as well. TDK negated the great Jacko's influence so he did his job as well.

Hats off to the backline who defended really well. Weiters ruled. Saad is one cool cucumber. Brodie Kemp was good except for his one glaring error. Jordan Boyd did some classy things.

Charlie stood up when required but it really would be nice to see him leading a lot more and moving his opponent around. We must improve the connection between the mids and other forwards.

Onwards and upwards.

Is there a word.for the position/role that Cottrell and Hollands play for us? They are like hybrid wing/hff but play the position in such an unusual way.

They cover so much ground for such little involvement in the play, but every involvement feels like a bonus.

We so rarely play short possession ball down the wings, so the only time we kick it to them is when the oppositin has broken down and they have sprinted 100m to create an overlap, or to a high risk/reward 50/50 (both Cotters goal from free kick yesterday and our match winnning goal in the semi final set up by Hollands fit this)

They cover immense ground defensively - getting forward into 50, then all the way back into defence - but so often their position or presence is jsut shutting doen space for the opposition. They don't even get tackle stats or spoils - if they do their job, the opposition stalls and doesn't even bother kicking it their way.

Weirdly, when we are dominating they are almost unsighted - ie vs North. But in our 3 wins they have arguably.been the difference, providing critical goals and keeping our structure solid right into the dying seconds - whether wr need to defend or attack they have been in the right spot even into the last 30 seconds (as Cotters game winner yesterday showed)

Finished watching the game (replay)

I’m glad I watched it. I think it was a hard fought win.

Lots of players played really well.

Fog Williams saad H Kennedy Cripps Hewett weiters Charlie durds Fantasia Cottrell TDK

just wanted also mention that TDK was good. He is rucking and gets involved around the ground. If he marked a few more he’d be superb.

Next week should see us 5-0….a dream start to the season

I was worried as Jackson was on fire early but IMO TDK fought back and beat him in a great battle. I thought it was close to TDKs best game ever

It's not the first time I've seen TDK beaten early only to adjust his game and find a way against his opponent. Shows some maturity and nous on his part.

They both topped the distance covered stats again with 15.3 km each. Think their roles are super important, though Ollie has been a bit down on confidence with offensive work. Filling space more important than chasing kicks.

Not a pretty win, but a win.

It was certainly touched, but in real time you can understand an umpire not seeing it. It was even hard for a period of time on slow mo.

Kemp - Thought his body work was amazing this game, really growing into his strength.
Cripps - That handball out of the pack to set up the Charlie goal was elite. Late game we needed it on the outside of the contest and he created.
Williams - More games and his attacking run and carry will be great, to take the game on after the Cripps handball was amazing.
Cotts - Took some hits to his game during the week from supporters and this week he got rewarded for his efforts with two goals, some weeks he will not.
Charlie - Just kicks the goals we needed, thought Pearce was solid on him but he took advantage of the kid Draper. (I think Draper has got some talent long term)
Owies - Provided some spark as a sub, great impact and that is what you want.
Weitering - My god he is the rock you need in the backhalf.
TDK - He is developing his ground ball game, that is where the upside is with this kid and there is plenty of upside.

Bad - I am getting slightly concerned with our contested game. It is great to win in "other" ways, but my god, I would love our one wood back again.
Kicking for goal, a few of those snaps needed to be nailed in a close game like this, you want reward for effort.

Why can’t any player fill spaces?
How many can we carry?

I understand the need for “defensive” type players but we also need players that can kick goals and contribute offensively as well

Acres & Kemp cover massive Kms but do a lot of other things. We need more of that. Defence should be just one criteria

Owies great mark and goal start of Q4 …

He should have played all game imo 🙌
In hindsight yes, due to the style of the game yesterday, but I understand why he was sub.

We’re trying to manage our small forwards (and I’d suggest, don’t know what our best forwardline looks like without Martin and Motlop), Durdin was sub, then Fantasia, then Owies.
And despite 3 goals last week, I thought Durdin was better. Durdin kicked his 2 when the game was on, and although he only had 4 touches, 3 were contested, went at 100%, 3 score involvements, only 1 less pressure act than Owies despite playing a quarter less. And Durd’s pace last week gave our forward line a different look.
Then Fantasia was excellent as the sub.

All players have a role, the wing/high half forwards in our side work harder than everyone else though. I'm not sure Ollie needs a spell, just needs to work through it.

I think Ollie will be a star but he’s struggling.

We are now a good side with players pushing for spots. Good form needs to be rewarded and poor form must have consequences. Binns Cincotta Cowan are pushing hard and we will get Walsh Marchbank and soon Motlop Martin Cuningham back

4 games in is enough and we have option's. Going back and finding form is a positive

Touched off the boot doesn’t get called 10 times a game.

There’s never been a review unless it’s a score review .

So keep sooking!!
Freo game plan is seriously flawed.

Entirely based on defensive ownership of the ball, to the detriment of their scoring.

As such, opponents will always be in games with tight finished to come.

Yesterday showed they haven’t learned how to manage tight finishes - poor decision making by Freo players in the last 5 minutes cost them.

Umpiring wasn’t their problem

Our ability to work through the detail of tight finishes won us the game.

Blame the umpires or “corrupt” AFL if you like - unless you fix the game plan/execution Freo will remain an also-ran.

We’re missing Walsh in the guts. I think it would be pretty disappointing to bring him back and play him wing. Especially when Elijah is already out now.

I can’t make an educated call on Binns, but a lot of the feedback seems to be that he’s not quite ready yet.
I doubt that Cincotta or Cow are up to a full game of wing.
If Martin and Motlop were fit, we could play Cotts on the wing, but I think we’re better off having Ollie try to work into form until then.

I don’t like the idea of rewarding bad form over good form. Not a great message. Just my opinion

I never suggested Cincotta or Cowan as wings

Cottrell has been tried as a wing and hasn’t done a lot. It’s such a vital role these days

Ollie hollands was worst on the ground according to afl player ratings. -1.6. He was been horrible. I’m not sure Binns deserves to wait any longer.
Maybe, maybe not. Hoping that if he was dropped it would be based on whether or not he did the things that were expected of him by the coaching panel and not because of some sort of player rankings. I note that he ran the most kms for the team so it's possible he did a fair bit of unrewarded running.

Last week there were plenty calling for Matt Cottrell's head.
