Review 2024 Second Elimination Final: Box Hill Hawks v Williamstown, 31 August 2024, 3.00pm @ Box Hill City Oval

A poor game. Choosing to kick into the wind expecting to overpower your opponent felt cocky then we proceeded to lose most contests. We then bombed it blindly when we had the breeze. Credit to Willy, they came in with a clear plan and executed it. Our players have been far more competitive than this though.

Maginness one of the few up for the fight. Won plenty of ball and although he didn’t use it well he lowered his eyes and had significant impact.

Ward close behind. Used it better than most and his link play was good. Real 50/50 between him and Finn for selection.

Reeves gave our mids first usage with high quality taps to advantage, but we didn’t capitalise.

Serong continued to be our best and most damaging defender.

CJ had little impact. Looked like he couldn't get out of third gear.

DGB’s biggest contribution was giving away a free when we got within 3 points.

Phillips beaten badly without the midfield to protect his lack of speed on a mobile opponent.

Scafie had one good kick.

O’Sullivan chose a bad time to play arguably his worst game for the year.

McCabe lacked composure under the pressure.

Ramsden was good. Had some stand out moments and constantly competed. One more preseason and I think he’ll be a solid AFL contributor.

Hustwaite wasn’t bad but got destroyed by Dawkins in the third. Lack of speed was exploited.

Wingard has lost his speed and explosiveness. Was trying very hard but end of the road.

Ryan/Mitchell/Stephens/BMac had some alright moments but largely ineffectual.

A disappointing performance.

Good to see Ward, Serong and Finn do well. Even with it being a final the other AFL listed players needed to show a lot more.

The AFL teams they will come up against are significantly better than what they faced today. If they struggle/ are average against this level of footy they are well off AFL level currently.

Shame he is so poor around the ground which is important for a ruckman in the modern game.
Thought he was owed at least 3 free kicks for having his arms pulled down in the marking contest.
Wasn’t a bad day out for him with 12 disposals and 35 hitouts.

Really really poor day from Hawthorn listed players to be honest, and crazy tactics to win the toss and kick into a strong wind in a final.

Reeves work around the ground is below par for a pro footballer. He has zero second efforts if he can’t mark the ball.
Finn gets it and absolutely torches it by foot and this has been the same since we drafted him.
CJ lacked game awareness and speed. No chance he is playing next week.
DGB is goneski.
I thought Ethan Phillips worked hard all day and looked as tho he was trying to rev players up.
Final game for Chad.
Little Seamus runs hard all day but for some reason makes some big blunders when a basic kick is needed.

Our forwards were always behind their opponent when we were kicking into the wind can you believe.

Out of all the Hawthorn listed players, if I was a betting man Wardy would be the one that gets a game. Used it fairly well and got into good positions today and kept running and trying.

Geez I read your reviews with interest each week and I feel quite aligned with what I write too. This review is quite brutal. I’ve only seen bits and on tv keen to know if you were at the ground?

would have thought a few papers stamped today.
sad end to Chad's career, he deserved so much better. What a fabulous player in his prime.
Cooper Stephens will be looking for a new home.
I think Phillips is contracted for next year, seems a bit of a list clogger now. Awful today.
DGB, what to do? he actually looked really good at times, but what to do with those brain fades?
O'Sullivan out to find somewhere else.
Bailey MacDonald a bit of a one-trick pony, tough day today, but disposal hmmmm
Seamus has been here a while without a lot of development, HH lack of pace surely a bridge too far for the player that otherwise has so many attributes.

Ryan, McCabe and Scaife ineffectual, but they are young and raw and need another full season of development.

with it all on the line, including their careers, you would have thought a whole lot more desperation might have turned up at Box Hill oval today.

Watched all year. Disappointed for most of it. Today was garbage. Not much to take from it from a development perspective they have not played well all year and were flattered by the margin were absolutely outplayed. Outside of Maginness reeves hard to see much else. Thought the box hill players were better than the afl listed players today. No changes for next week.

What next week ?

The hawthorn listed players where terrible

U could easily chop 8 of them

I hope we have a few a aces up our sleeves come trade period

It was certainly a well deserved loss.

To kick against the breeze was just suicide and basically made it that much harder to win the game. Who was involved in that decision? The coach or just a flight of fancy from the captain.

But then not to play a loose man down back in the first quarter (until far too late) was ridiculous.

But what was also staggering was that when we kicked against the breeze, we played behind our opponents. And kicking with the breeze we bombed it long and played in front!!
Under 12s know not to do that.

These were just basic mistakes even before we mention the players - and they were ordinary to say the least.

We were hopelessly outcoached against an opposition which was well drilled and focused on an excellent game plan.

Agreed. Outcoached by a mile. Not only did we bomb long into the breeze, we habdalled and kicked wide and shirt with the breeze. Their players were in the right sports to stop us playing a more logical game plan. We had no space and no answers.

Isn't Barrass and Battle enough for you??
Excellent additions

If we want an 8 year window we will need to replace 6 blokes over next 6 years -replacements to be quality

Otherwise it’s a 4 year window

Rough and Mitchell to be market leaders in list management hopefully
