Is there anyone else sharing my early draft pick PTSD?

I don't care if the projected number 1 pick looks like Fabio and plays like Wayne Carey and Michael Jordan's artificially fused DNA.

If we're muckraking for a top 2 pick I'll feel like my football watch experience has properly turned into a permanent self-fisting with a mallet.

Would rather step up to be competitive and get some "nourishment". 5 wins. Please. Let some other clubs fap off about hitting the depths and recruiting some promising kid instead.

It'd be 5 years of "oh yay we won the #1 pick" type rhetoric to be in the hunt for Liz Smillie or whatever his name is this year. Enough. **** that.

I think everyone in here would much prefer we go on a rampage and win 10-12 games.

No one here is "advocating" for pick 2 at all.

We could win 5 games and still have pick 3, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. West Coast are a clearly the worst team in the comp at this stage, then it's between us and Hawthorn for picks 2 and 3. Can't see anyone else at this point being as bad as the three of us.

I'm going emotional level here mate. Just speculating on the top tier talent gives me chills nowadays.

Once upon a time I'd be frustrated learning about the top draft kids knowing we were no chance of getting them.

Now I'm frustrated because we're always a chance of getting them.

History suggests that 7 wins will still have you sitting bottom 4.

Winning 5, pick 3 next Dustin Martin, 3 premierships.

Ok approved.

I long for the days when we'd have a cursory glance the day before the draft at who might be there at pick 18.

Bit left field, but Neil Erasmus would be one to keep an eye on from Freo. Only 20 years old, racking up big numbers in the WAFL and is 190cm, but cant break into the Freo midfield.

Might be hard to convince him to leave WA, but if he could put on a few kgs he would definitely help as a big bodied mid in the right age range. Probably gettable with a 2nd rounder at the moment as well.
Would be a fantasic get if we could some how get it done. Great call Kangas-11

About as much as Phillips I suggest. Let’s do it lol

Don’t rule it out as crazy. They’d love Phillips I think. Two high picks struggling to crack in their sides consistently and both fit needs.

Don’t be so sure that we are better than West Coast. Their senior players are way better than our senior players ie Yeo, Kelly, Cripps, McGovern, Barass etc.
our over 25 year olds, albeit we only have a few, are by far the worst in the league

McGrath has had a quietly very very good start to the year.

The best of his career by an absolute mile.

He would be a good off broadway FA target imo, at 26 years of age that could release Sheezel or McKercher long term to other roles.

He's been much maligned by the public and even Essendon supporters the last few years, which plays well given current form.
Yep this is our guy. Pay him what he wants. Good defensively and neat offensively. Fills a need for us. Costs nothing in draft capital. Gets us one step closer to a more balanced team sheet.

Thats why i wouldnt blame Zuurhar. LDU is probably slightly different because if he extends with us then Sheez and Wardlaw are in their 4th yeah which is about early stages AFL battle hardened players. Durrsma and Kerch starting their 3rd and starting to become more consistant. But i would dismiss the chances of losing LDU either.
Of our over 25s you could argue we're no worse of a team with non of them playing.

If Will isn’t in our future then make him part of a trade for Max Holmes.

Throw the farm at Holmes and yeah have a good crack at Busslinger too although you would think WCE would be trying their hardest to lure him home as a McGovern replacement.

How good would a midfield/wing rotation in 2025 be LDU, Wardlaw, Sheezel, McKercher, Powell, Simpkin, Holmes and Scott.

FA Hardwick from the Hawks and take the best two KPP’s in the draft with our first two picks and the best available small forwards with our next two.

As much as KPP is an issue , we have neglected small forwards.
Other sides 2-3 in their senior side with just as many in their vfl side , while we have none at all.
These players are the ones that create the front pressure as well as kicking goals - two things we struggle with.

I’d rather we draft a couple of them plus kpp - mids are fine

Cooper is definitely promising and his VFL performances at this age suggest he's going to be an AFL player of substance. His injury came at a bad time.

River Stevens is a bit similar.

Neither of them have elite footspeed though.

If we are filling out the list with small forwards they have to have be sub 3 second sprint times. Our biggest issue is closing down space quickly once the ball hits the ground in our forward line.

Strangely we've done it for over a decade.

Considering we've had a hell of a time containing them we've barely tried finding one.

The last one I recall recruiting who had any kind of impact was Nahas.

Yes, I included a caveat "West Coast are a clearly the worst team in the comp at this stage…"

Especially as it's been a traditional position of strength for North, we were one of the first sides to really adopt permanent quick small forwards.

Some of our absolute game breakers over the last 40 years have been small forwards.

Krakouers
McAdam
Jose Romero
Allison
Shan Motlop
Boomer
Byron at stages
Winnie
LT

Bizarre that we've had such a barren run with it.

The curse of Kieran Harper, as he looked a monty to continue to carry that torch.

Cat b rookie still a pet peeve of mine especially when you see cats with Blicavs celebrating game 250 this week

Use the free hits ffs and maybe we get someone eventually like the above
It’s like this brother. We have struggled with late picks. Identifying that diamond in the rough. You have to back to when Lewis was recruiting manager with Larkey and Zurhaar to when you could argue we aced some late / rookie picks. Since who have we picked up late that looks a player? Ford? Finnigans was horrendous at the caper. And Rawling ain’t much chop either if we are being honest. What needs to happen moving forward is that we need to start seeing us do well in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds of the draft. Identify that diamond in the rough as you’ve alluded to. If we can’t we will be chasing our tail for a long time. :stern look

Luckily Finnigan isn't at the club anymore and Rawlings isn't the recruiting manager then.

I agree with you, I would prefer a clean slate under Thursfield, that includes getting rid of Clayton.
