I mean Beau is clearly better than fog but jeez he’s overrated. Classic solid player on a great team getting overhyped

One of those that plays a role that suits the side. Not the greatest player but important to his side and makes them better. Good sides have players like him

If I was an AFL coach, my favourite player would always be the one who just gets the job done, week in week out. George Hewett was like that prior to his back injury - not a star, but never beaten. You can’t have too many of that type of player.

He didn’t before? Do tell 🤔

Nope. Teague especially limited his time with players. Russell now (and his team) fully controls fitness, loads and injury recovery. Standards
Also overruled by Teague on numerous occasions regarding selection of “unfit” players
Since Voss took over Russell is fully responsible for fitness and if a player is fit enough to play
The improvement is obvious

Something a bit different. My Top 5 pre season performers

1. Lachie Fogarty - In everything. Middle/HF and hasn't missed a beat, doesn't make mistakes and does the 1% as well as any
2. Sam Walsh - Not surprising to many but flying and as fit as he has ever been. Clocking the miles and trains like plays
3. Matt Kennedy - Fittest I have ever seen him. Stronger but lighter and covering the ground so well. Even looks a bit quicker
4. TDK - Highlight machine but working hard. Marking a highlight all over the ground. Seems more confident
5. Lachie Cowan - Now looks comfortable. Extremely fit, tough and involved and doesn't stop. Kicking a highlight. Matching Newman Saad for contribution

Best Newbie - Wilson ahead of Hollands & Monahan

Could have picked another 30 but these have stood out to me
I'm loving your input Soapy.

How is it that you are getting much more access to training than the average blues nut?

And in fairness, Soap… the part about Teague overruling and selecting unfit players was being documented by some around here at the time (you were likely one of them). So your comments are not some type of revisionism.

I could believe that regarding Teague and Russell. Teague always struck me as a bit stubborn and unreceptive to feedback. Like that guy at work that gets promoted to a role beyond their capability. What they should be doing is being vulnerable, listening to others and utilising everyone at their disposal to get better and learn. Instead they often try do everything themself and their way in order prove they can do it. Rarely ends well. Could be wrong but that's my perception.

Someone like Voss on the other hand would be secure enough in his abilities to admit when he doesn't have the answer and to leverage others to better both himself and the collective. Would be much easier to maximise Russell's capabilities under that system.

I get along to training whenever I can and know a few people.

Most comments are what I see as opposed to inside info

Soapy ya legend! Defs my offseason MVP (2nd still up for grabs guys!).

I love this info cos I think we’ve all been through so much as a supporter base over the past 5 years that to hear info like this helps us make sense of what was such a brutal time for us lovers of this great club.

Love that Russell gets free reign now, and kudos to him for staying with us through the turmoil as I’m sure it would’ve been tough to be limited by a new kid on the block after working with such highly esteemed people in his past.

IMO a Very accurate assumption

Became a very divisive figure. Players and people he loved and many he wouldn't even talk to. Absolute Control freak

The worst Coach I have ever seen and I don't say that lightly

Appreciate it but just happy to provide any info I can as I know how much I appreciate any inside info or reports offered by others. :thumbsu:

I don’t think he had a great relationship with the captain either

The relationship seemed to sour around Simmo’s last game

He had a crack at the players and it wasn’t well received

Contrast that with how Voss gives feedback and knowing how and when to give strong feedback

Any idea on what position Wilson is playing? Wing? Attacking half back? Half forward? Is there any chance he overtakes (or has already overtaken) players in his position already?

I constantly hear he’s dominating so far, but I’m struggling to figure out where he would play if he got a crack early in the year if the list is healthy

The new Armfield cult figure.
Yep. Cotts should be proud of his efforts.

Has gone from - Our worst player on the list - good squad player - has a dip - could be in our best team - can't see why he can't be in our best team - regular starter and probably best on at half time in a finals game.

Was given running capacity. The rest he worked hard to achieve.

we have little knowledge of teague's level of influence, good or bad, on this group..........when you finish with such a low win %, ya gonna look pretty bad in the scheme of things - however, there will be players on our list who have benefited from his tenure I'm tipping, same as there will likely be some who weren't so well coached - a bit easy to poke at a past coach's meager efforts from way up here on top of the ladder (where we currently sit)...........learning from mistakes is still learning..........

The best coached footy clubs are those who have a great team and coach the list as a team. Fitness staff do the fitness, forwards do the forwards, mids do the mids etc. Same with recruiting.

Carlton have been an amaeture football club in a professional league for decades and it's taken years to turn that around.

It's good to see.

Great to see so many putting their hands up. Players are having a hard preseason, competing against and with quality competitive players. What the team has to work on and focus on is getting less and less over the years. Players getting fitter. List getting deeper. Hard to see us not having a big season.

I'm liking hearing of the player improvement. Players skills are better. Players are fitter. Small improvements over manny makes for a big improvement.

Are we a club where players come here from other clubs and aren't as well conditioned as the rest? It's looking that way. Very excited to see us play this season.

watched 15 minutes of the younger players doing a handball game last night while walking the dogs. billy wilson was everywhere - definitely catches the eye

Won't be surprised if at some stage this season he is best 22 or at least very very close. I think we have a gem here. Very impressed with him as an athlete. Big strong body, fast, endurance, overlap run and two way run looks really good, skills look really good. Could be that explosive two way running on ball player we are looking for. But could come into the AFL side in other positions.

He's doing very well. Mostly HB/Wing in bits I have seen

He is very quick and his work rate is excellent adn doesn't hesitate. Ball use is a highlight. He is a classy player who I reckon will become a mid

Hard to see him cracking a spot for a while but if he gets a chance he won't let us down. A year in the Reserves would do him wonders

PS I remember draft night wanting Cooper Simpson and being disappointed when Billy was called out. I have no idea how Simpson is going but we should all be happy I’m not in recruiting 🤦

Hey Soapy, what's the low down on Moir in what you have seen?

All I have seen is a mighty impressive sun tan .

Can be selected as either DEF/MID in SuperCoach….

Sure there was a recent article or bit about him but I can’t recall where that was from but that had him in the backline and competition for spots.
This from Fox Footy.
“Observers on Tuesday were impressed by draftee Billy Wilson’s speed and smarts and he could push for a Round 1 debut.”
