He's doing very well. Mostly HB/Wing in bits I have seen….

PS I remember draft night wanting Cooper Simpson and being disappointed when Billy was called out. I have no idea how Simpson is going but we should all be happy I’m not in recruiting 🤦
FWIW Simpson is getting some good reviews at Freo. Some suggestion will get early games.

Happy with Billy. A real goer with a good degree of versatility. Expect a Binns like trajectory. A year or even two in the reserves getting (over) ready for an immediate impact when he gets opportunity. Probably gets his start at half back when Saad, Newman and Williams finish up in a couple (or few) years. Not seeing big midfield opportunity for a while. Crippa, Doc and Hewett the only ageing types in there.

Hey Soapy, what's the low down on Moir in what you have seen?

All I have seen is a mighty impressive sun tan .

Seems to be a bit behind with fitness and having an AFL body. Has been in "rehab" group a lot building up. It was mentioned early on that he has had a bad hip injury that they are building up and strengthening

When he trains you can't doubt the skills. Does some impressive stuff

In game sim seems to be still adapting to pace and hardness. Doesn't always go when he needs to. Reminds me a bit of Jamara Ugle-Hagan in his first year

I have no idea of what they think internally but I really see it as a development year for him. If he plays whole year in 2's and keep building and improving I think we will be happy.

Won't be surprised if at some stage this season he is best 22 or at least very very close. I think we have a gem here. Very impressed with him as an athlete. Big strong body, fast, endurance, overlap run and two way run looks really good, skills look really good. Could be that explosive two way running on ball player we are looking for. But could come into the AFL side in other positions.
It’s great that we don’t have to rush players anymore, but if they are ready & there’s a need why not? e.g. OHollands last year

With Wilson, is he not ready due to:
1. Learning to play as a mid
2. Fitness & conditioning
3. No spots - who is he competing with anyway?

3.

Hollands had an obvious spot last year and took it even though he had weaknesses.

Wilson is a bit the same but at the moment I just don't see a spot. He is competing with Williams Saad Cowan Cincotta Boyd or maybe Hollands Acres & Docherty

Like you said there is no need to rush and that's a good thing

Yep. Cotts should be proud of his efforts.

Has gone from - Our worst player on the list - good squad player - has a dip - could be in our best team - can't see why he can't be in our best team - regular starter and probably best on at half time in a finals game.

Was given running capacity. The rest he worked hard to achieve.
Couldn't agree more..
At the time, I genuinely believed Gibbons was going to be the better player of the two.

It doesn't matter now, but i still think he was cut too early.

If we were talking 1-2 years in the reserves for Billy before he steps up, are you sure you can’t see a spot in midfield for him? The only reason I ask is that it sounds like he brings something different in terms of pace

watched 15 minutes of the younger players doing a handball game last night while walking the dogs. billy wilson was everywhere - definitely catches the eye

My old man has been going to a few training sessions with his spare time, reckons “that blond kid with the long hair” should be playing round 1.

Said in the scratchy a few weeks ago he went back with the flight very courageously and took a massive hit, jumped straight back up and got on with finding the footy as if it didn’t even phase him.

I’m very excited to see what he can do in the practice match series.

Regardless of his pace, we are adding sufficient pace already with the Hollands boys joining Williams and maturing small forwards joining Orazio in the front half.

Real “pace” is more from ball movement efficiency as much or more than pure pace. Kid has positives, but is not replacing Cripps, Walsh, Cerra, Hewett, Kennedy, Docherty, Hollands (x2) and other “pinch hitters” in the short term.

No slight on the kid, but expect loyalty to the blokes getting it done.

IMO, between seasons - we are likely to add three players. For me, these are:
  1. Williams
  2. EHollands
  3. Fantasia
Given that EHollands can't play the first game, we have a spot for Wilson
But, that would mean someone else has to miss out - like a Kennedy (I have Hewett ahead of Kennedy)

Sure, ball movement efficiency and game plans trump "pace".
But, real pace is still real pace.

If given a choice to go into a game with Kennedy, who has had a great preseason VS a new kid Wilson who offer real pace - can the selection committee really bypass Kennedy? The only way is that Wilson have blinders in the preseason games and force his way in.

Again, this is a great problem to have :D

A vfl midfield of Carroll, Carroll, Binns and Wilson being fed by Mirkov and Okeefe is a very young one. But it should create excellent development for them to move up to the top level pretty seamlessly. They will also have one of the afl listed players that don’t get named with them.
Ramshaw might be ahead of some of those midfielder's too.

I agree on pure pace being from ball movement efficiency. But once again, that sounds like where he has been going very well in training. If he has leg speed and foot skills, is there still no way you can see him there in 2025?

Gibbo was incredibly underrated imo...and we never actually got to see the best of him either. Won a couple of JJ's playing midfield for Willi, but never spent a minute in the midfield for us playing as a small forward.

Also never got dropped in 3 years in the navy, and never played a game for our VFL side.

Either way, I really rated him....thought he was cut way too early.

This isn't really the thread for it guys, more list management I reckon.

FWIW I agree but he was out of contract at the wrong time.

Interesting that a lot of the potential round 1 teams in the other thread have Fantasia as a round 1 starter. I legitimately thought he’d be retiring after barely seeing him play for Port last season.

Is he going that well at training that he’s putting his hand up for a senior team spot so early on?

He has always had the talent, great signs that he is fit. Definite best 23 starter when fit

Flying. Bloody impressive and hasn't missed a session

I don't know what happened at Port but he looks fit and happy and has fitted in well. What has amazed me is his pace. He is lightning and in match sims has made a big difference to our forward half. Real X factor and has a presence

Adding he and Hollands for bugger all has been a master stroke by our recruiting team

According to Port supporters it sounds like Ken signed his tickets early last season. Fanta had broken down to many times to trust so Ken just put a line through him.

I tend to believe it because he played 2 months straight in the SANFL at the end if the season and was playing well but still couldnt get a look in. That was at a time Port were dropping off. On merritt he should have got a callup.
