There really isn't a plan a and plan b game plan. There was a time when there was. Teams are big on situational training now. Clubs work hard on what they are trying to achieve and how they intend to do it and how they want to play. Structures, positioning, patterns etc.

They train for situations. Collingwood were massive on that, probably lead the way in this area the last two seasons. We probably won our finals because we were decent in this area. How you play, what you are trying to do in particular situations. Something we have grown over the years and I expect we will expand on next season.

Interesting 1st post since 2008 & no AFL Club support listed 🤔

Where have you been the past 16yrs!

One thing I’m really keen to see more of this season is playing with cohesion.

I think last year we showed some really good passages of cohesiveness and at other times we won by out working our opponents (not always pretty).

So this season I’m hoping we play with a bit more cohesion. It is splendid to watch. 🙌🙌👌👌

I noticed their was 2 players wearing number 5 in Blues jumper one was Cerra not sure if it was Elijah Holland or someone else

I have noticed during the last few seasons it has looked like we have had two #18s on the field at once...

Pretty sure it’s a train on player called Johnny. Dont have any other details other than he is tough as nails and takes no s**t from nobody. Here is his lates pic.

As they were breaking up from the huddle, Johnny could be heard screaming 'no disassemble'...

Still think we were a long way off a couple of things that should be easy to remedy. Hoping we implement scenarios in our training to improve.

  1. Our kickouts. We were better last year, but always look a bit shaky. Must work on this so that we can work the ball out easier. McGovern has to be the 'go to'. He is has a great, penetrating kick and a fantastic footy brain. Will see safe and attacking options which can open up the game for us.
  2. Opposition kickouts. Our system needs to be better. The opposition were able to extricate the ball & transition from the backline too easily last year.
  3. Last two minutes in a tight game scenarios. Yes, the last play in the Melbourne game was brilliant. BUT, there were so many games we fell in by under a goal, when the last two minutes became manic. The Collingwood 'play' where they get numbers around the ball. Force ball ups. The ruck taps it at his feet and they all fall on the ball, fall on each other, and tackle each other has been extremely effective. They have never let the ball get out of the congestion. We need to close out games and run the clock down with confidence.
If we get this right, we have found another 5/10% of improvement...

I know "game plan" is not a sexy term anymore, but we still have them... plan a, plan b, plan c. We just may not refer to them as such. If you train for various different "situations", you could label them Situation A, Situation B etc. It is a pre-planned change in the method/process/approach/game plan in response to something happening in the game.

Your teams A plan might be go slow, use the boundary, pressure, restrict oppo scoring. But when its 5 mins to go and you are 2 goals down, you MUST have a pre-defined game plan/situation plan to change things to say go fast and through the middle to take a risk in an attempt to try and win the game.

Unless what you are referring to a teams guiding principles/brand? For example, "pressure" and "toughness in the contest" might be non-negotiables no matter what the situation/game plan. And, obviously, within "plan A" you can still use tactics such as moving a player to negate a player, or to give a player on fire more opportunity to maintain that advantage etc.

Yes, most players in the side are different to each other like Cripps to Walsh to Cerra. Do you like Cunners tricks enough to leave out Hewett for example.
Well for me personally, Hewett.

DC might do a particular thing with his tricks that wins a game, but he also might not, whereas you can always count on Hewett to be pulling his weight all game and just doing his job. You can never be in doubt that he's ticked all his own boxes, win or lose.

But that whole comparison also shows they are totally different players. I certainly do hope DC goes up a level this season and forces his way in..

Hewett and DC are not in competition.

Hewett can't play mid-fwd and DC isn't a full-time mid

Mid-fwd race is between

Elijah
DC
Martin
Motlop
Kennedy
Fog
Cotts
Orazio

Personally i'd leave the boys with soft tissue history out.

Elijah
DC
Kennedy
Motlop
Fog
Cotts

Pick 2 one starts HFF the other bench

Obviously these guys can play other roles as well

Pretty certain Fantasia will play a significant role if his body is sound.
He is tracking well right now.
