Haven’t noticed Martin in the most recent photos or training highlights.
Any track watchers got some sightings?
Maybe that hamstring rumour has “some legs”…..,..I’ll see myself out!

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app

Club is being conservative with Martin given his calf issues

Plan is, will make a cameo in both scratch matches

A fit Cunningham adds speed and field kicking class to the outside as well as excellent finishing ability in the forward 50- I can understand why they want him playing the HHF role ...if it clicks for him we have a serious weapon - if...if if ...
I've got my fingers crossed - again.

It is going to be hard picking the starting midfield - very hard to keep Hewett and Kennedy out of the mix - both are looking very fit- especially Kennedy - goodness gracious are we looking at a Carlton list that can actually afford to rest players as required during H&A so the team doesn't go into finals all totally banged up ?

woweee!

In theory he does. Issue is he has NEVER produced it consistently at AFL level

He has all the tools and would be a great point of difference. Just needs to produce. IF training is any indication he could be close

Fingers crossed

He's fine. Every player has their own program.
Great to hear, thanks Soapy.

Each of him, Marchy, Fog and Cunners are players that transformed our set up and give us such a different feel in game style.

I don't think any of them were at their absolute best last year given their battles with long layoffs, but with a full pre-season, each of them has the capacity to improve individually and collectively.

I just love Martin and his attack on the footy, he is ferocious!!!

not much positivity over on the pies thread. Was expecting them to be bullish after their match sim but not one word of positivity.

I haven’t watched it but has anyone here?

Cuningham has almost become a mythological figure and the vision from earlier in this week will only serve to perpetuate that vibe. The introduction of E Hollands might have placed a stronger lens on his need to step up.

Every club knows another club's gameplan

What they aren't privy to, is tactics to reverse or maintain momentum

And no, no club has B,C, etc gameplans
Could debate the semantics of defining game plan and tactics but instead ...
Some clubs remain sensitive about streaming intra-clubs and match simulation within open training sessions - that's what I've been told.

Some clubs believe these are the best opportunities to fine tune and trial new tactics and add layers to the game plan in a realistic way. All clubs also do tactical work inside behind closed doors.

Training and games are analysed by clubs, supporters, media to the nth degree and I think it's ridiculous for anyone to argue that fans don't get amazing access ... it has never been better.

Unfortunately the open environment has actually only served to perpetuate the attitude that hiding away some elements of the game plan could create a significant advantage.

Many AFL clubs look to sport in the US as a lead around best practice approaches. As a Carlton example, I believe Voss might have even brought back some theories from ice hockey following a trip to the US over our summer.

In the NFL, a surprise play can often be the difference between winning and losing. In fact, success in that competition is almost predicated on having a diamond tucked away in your back pocket (and having a quarterback with the skill to execute it at the right time).

That's all part of the game plan.

Thanks Soapy V - You've put in a good preseason at IKON park too ;)

You've made quite a few player observations.
Can I get some observations on game plan - what are the highlights, what caught your eyes?

It’s going on 4 years since Cuners put up that unbelievable first half against Essendon that had us all dreaming.

This really is the make or break season for him, though I feel like we’ve said that multiple times.

Just outside the best 23 for mine but like others he will get his chance at some point. Hopefully he grabs it with both hands. If he is playing to his potential at AFL level we will be in a great position.

4 years ago we had no system, so talent was critical, even if it was inconsistent. So you played guys like DC every chance you could, and hoped for more than 5 minutes of magic every few rounds.
We now seem to be at the point where we are operating as a well-oiled machine, where talented but inconsistent types like DC are less valuable than solid but reliable types who do a consistent job for us that we can depend on, like a Fogarty.

So yeah, make or break for DC. His best is awesome but, with real competition for spots now, that alone isn't good enough to get a spot any more.

Just a build on last season. No major changes

Players being able to push up the ground to get to more contests has been a focus as been taking the game on and kicking to advantage. Acres/Hollands really get back to help defence, HF push to Wings etc

Combinations have been improved as has delivery inside 50.

They have done so many match sims. All about just getting better and better at the basics is my take

I'm just thinking out loud here...

Going deep into the finals has had a profound effect on CFC, I think we have the following compounding factors:
  • Club stability allow people to do their jobs
  • Coaches gained confidence and can continue to work toward their plans
  • Players have trust and confidence in the game plan. They will respond better to training and coaches instructions
  • Natural improvement from all players, with our key players are in their prime
  • Hunger from almost reaching the GF and a chance for a premiership
  • Happy people perform better - and I can see a lot of smiles :D

In term of "taking the game on and kicking to advantage", the addition of Williams, EHolland & Fantasia will help to transform the team. e.g.
  • Williams can run & kick from defense, adding to multiple players who can do this including Saad, Doch, Boyd and Newman
  • EHolland can help with the transition
  • Fantasia can help to create havoc in the F50 - leading to more easy goals and dangerous options away from our talls

One word - Exciting!!!

Bounce the ball already and bring home the 17th cup :D

To add to this I haven't seen one player tried in a different role from last year

Some have added some experiences, like McKay ruck, DC Motlop some mid time but no changes in role

Says to me the coaches think we were close and we can make up the difference but basic improvements from within on top of additions in Fantasia Hollands & Williams
