Bytel no - ditto had 5 years at saints. Good VFL stats like Macrae but not at the next level

Hustwaite no - why invite him ti train when he has been at the club for years? Would’ve been taken in the rookie draft if they really wanted him

Edit: Bytel might be worth a look. Had a several impactful games at the saints 🤷‍♂️
We could use another inside mid as depth. We have Macrae and Carmichael in VFL and not much else.

Ed Allan? Maybe once he gets stronger. But likely to play outside as a winger.

I'll be fine in giving one of Bytel or Hustwaite an SSP slot if they impress.

Bytel is an interesting selection, based on Hine's statement along the lines of - if you can't run you won't get a game at Collingwood, seems Bytel's weakness is a lack of spread/run. Looks to have the inside game to provide cover for an injury to Titch and that's about it - I like the idea of cover for Titch, as I see Macrae as complimentary to Titch rather than capable of replacing him.

VAFA Team of the Year 2023
WB-Premier-Mens-1.jpg

Tom Cutler: Brisbane and Essendon fringe 96 AFL games
Mitch Wallis: Western Bulldogs 162 AFL games
Dave Mirra: Hawthorn 11 AFL games
And Frenetic has a crazy attack on the ball.

For mine the MSD is seeing which mature age players have performed best at state level eg Noble/Johnson

… or taking an overage 19 year old kid who may have been hampered in his draft year

I prefer when we have a spot in it rather than missing out like last year

Also as I mentioned in my previous post I’m just not really into the list of players that they currently have training…

Who'd we miss out on in this year's MSD that merited retaining a spot for?

It really depends on what the trialling players show.
If they are good enough, we'll take 3.
I was thinking if one of the 3 they are tossing up is a VFL listed player, Ayre or Husthwaite, they could keep them for the MSD. That way, they haven't lost them completely if they don't get chosen after this pre-season trial.

Plus, we'll likely be picking very, VERY late in the MSD anyway.
Exactly - we could miss out on a player we want because our pick is the last one.
It makes more sense to grab them when we don't have any competition, in the SSP.

Touché

Who’d we miss out on previous years if we didn’t have a spot
🤔 💡

Noble, Johnson were speculative picks at the time… but had good SANFL form

Begg another…

Edit: Naismith, Hore, McDonald, Clohesy, Mannaugh… several now signed former VFL
Players

Plus our own Hustwaite and Eyre…

were available at our theoretical pick in the 2023 MSD

You may well be right but his junior profile describes him as an endurance beast who can run all day.
